Let me know if you've made any mods to your swingarm bag. Or, have you made your own saddlebag using something that was repurposed? I'd love to hear what you've done. I've also got plans to make a couple of leather items myself, so be sure to subscribe to get notified when I post future videos. Thanks for watching!
My Viking Bags swingarm bag came with a thick polymer/plastic plate. I’m not sponsored by them but I’m very happy with that bag and it was less than $100.
Hey Travis - thanks for the kind words! That plate is still working well :) And if you want a sticker send me a DM on Telegram, Instagram or Signal with the mailing info @RonsWorkshop
@@RonsWorkshop That sounds great , I definitely would like this, what info do you need to send this to me, also I'm not sure what material you used but I'm considering aluminum , non corrosive, lighter etc.I really appreciate this and it is an awesome idea , thanks again!
Yeah aluminum should be fine. I used 16 gauge steel. Send me a DM on Telegram, Instagram or Signal @RonsWorkshop or send me an email. Very well done Ron, it's a shame so many brands skimp on this feature. I know Viking has a good plastic backing while others are "semi-rigid" (thinner backing presumably). Endscuoio say they use "an aluminum reinforcement located near the installation straps" - by chance can anybody vouch for this feature with heavier loads over time?
Hey Andrew - thanks for the kind words! I keep mine lightly loaded but it has done very well over the past couple of years that I've been using it. And I posted a link to download the template in this video description.
Thanks for the encouragement, Brian! I have a pdf template that you can print on 11x17 paper if you want to give it a try. And if you want a sticker send me a DM on Telegram, Instagram or Signal with the mailing info @RonsWorkshop
@@RonsWorkshop Thank you for your kind offer. I own a Harley 883 and I am looking for a "right" bag+solution. The only thing I hate about 883 is zero space to store. I notice Viking has a hard mount system sold for $50.
Hey G Whain - thanks for the kind words! I love the swing arm bag and don't notice any effect on handling or balance. It doesn't hold much, but it takes care of the essentials. Let me know if decide to grab one!
I’m planning on buying this exact bag to match my diamond stitch saddleman seat. Do you plan on selling these back plates? I’d also love to see another video on adding a lock to the bag. Great videos!
Hi Michael - I can send you the template if that would help. I’ve thought about the idea of producing them but I haven’t pulled it all together yet. Send me a DM on Instagram @RonsWorkshop if you want the template and / or a channel sticker. That’s an interesting challenge on adding the lock to the swingarm bag. I’ll think on that and see if I can come up with something. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hey Steve - I don’t fab the plates to order, but you can download the template for free - it’s easy to cut it out with a grinding wheel or something similar: www.buymeacoffee.com/RonsWorkshop/e/102411 Let me know if you try it!
Nice video my friend! I been just using my backpack and I have not tried any bags yet. The swing arm looks great but just little to small for stuff I’d like to carry. So for me I feel I may go with the saddle bags but not sure if I will get hard case or soft. How are the apes working for you? Found any dislikes yet?
Yeah the solo swingarm bag is definitely minimalistic and only holds a small amount of stuff. I also use a backpack when I need to carry more - I found a small tactical pack that fits nicely on the sissy bar. I'll also be making my own sissy bar bag out of leather. I'm working on the plans and that will be a future video as well. Let me know if you go with saddlebags or something else. I LOVE the ape hangers. I actually think I could have gone with the 19" bars but the 17" are working great. And I haven't forgotten about your request on the grips - video coming :) Thanks for watching!
Hey Michael - I’m not really sure but my concern was that it would gradually deform over time, especially in the Florida heat. For another project I used 1/8” PVC sheet and it was definitely too flimsy for anything like this. If you try it let me know how it goes!
@@RonsWorkshop than you for the response and that was my fear as well. I live in AZ but thought since the abs was inside the leather it might be ok. But really have no idea
Give it a shot and see how it goes. The good thing is the ABS or PVC sheet should be very inexpensive and it’ll be easy to work with. Let me know if you try it. If you want a channel sticker send me a DM on Telegram or Instagram with the mailing info @RonsWorkshop
Hey Christopher - I used a steel plate that is something like 1/16" or 0.060" thick. I have a template that you could print on 11x17 paper. If you want to check that out send me a DM on Telegram, Instagram or Signal @RonsWorkshop or send me an email. RU-vid strips out the email address from comments, so I can’t provide it here. Hey Joe - thanks for the kind words! I wouldn’t really have the time to fab it for you, but you can download the template for free from my buy me a coffee page. You’d need to print it in 11x17 paper: www.buymeacoffee.com/RonsWorkshop/e/102411 Let me know if you give it a shot!
Thanks for asking! I suspect each bag is a little different in terms of where the slots end up. They are probably pretty close but not exact. I could send you the template for the plate and you could mark where the slots hit and then cut/drill the slots. Let me know if you want to give it a try.
