A complete performance of La Sylphide with Eva Evdokimova, the one true Sylph. James is Peter Schaufuss, Madge is the notable character dancer Niels Bjørn Larsen. Also dancing Margot Clarke, Nicholas Johnson and artists of the London Festival Ballet (later known as English National Ballet)
Apologies for the occasional subpar sound quality. Stay with it... it does get better and it's totally worth it!

My heart! Ohhhh how I miss seeing true artistry like this of Eva Evdokimova...it is such a rare thing these days.

Eva Evdokimova is the most exquisite Sylph I've seen, even better than Fracci. Her gorgeous footwork, the airy lightness and ballon of her jumps, her soft, boneless arms, the way she dances with her fingertips, her musicality, her pure, sweet temperament. She is all magical spirit, truly not of this mortal world.

Well, I never saw Marie Taglioni or Lucile Grahn dance, of course, but this is probably the closest I'll ever get. Technique such as this is rare to come by these days. It's all about tension, forcefulness, and posing rather than moving now. Not to speak of the lack of épaulement.

In my opinion, the worst part of dancing this ballet focusing on the extensions -as most nowadays dancers do- is that they often make the body look heavy in jumps. The Sylphide is a winged creature, she's supposed to be light on floor.
@joyvan0827
@joyvan0827 3 года назад
@@beatiroide I think it’s a lack of coordination. Dancers nowadays are too flexible to be strong. The classical ballet coordination is simply not there. If one needs to twist his/her arms before taking off in pirouette, he/she hasn’t learned to dance ballet correctly from the get go.

The dancers are from the London Festival Ballet (later known as English National Ballet) and the film has an English director so I assume it was performed somewhere in the UK, probably London.

She is wonderful, but this 'edition' is ridiculously corrupt with considerable interpolations, some of which look like Bournonville and some of which do not. Bad video direction too, with way too many tight shots which makes hash of the wonderful ensemble dancing.

Schaufauss recreated lost dance and mime scenes from the original for this production !!! So not corrupt at all getting back to the original
@1psoas9
@1psoas9 3 года назад
@@siegfried923 How do you know this? I'd like to believe it. The unfamiliar material IS in a compatible style, with a lot of feathery but not ostentatious 'grace notes" one does not see in the usual unembroidered edition, the RDB perform. The geometric group dances are festive, intricate, and musical -- they do diffuse the dramatic drive, but not unacceptably, IMHO. [Perhaps after watching this version several times I'll wish the additions away, but at first glance it seems to me that the principals hold the threads together so powerfully that it's a celebration of the ensemble -- though i DO miss the impetuosity that makes James's sudden decision to bolt with her come as a shock even to the audience.]
@siegfried923
@siegfried923 3 года назад
@@1psoas9 Schaufauss was interviewed before this production and had done research into both the score and notation for his recreation. It was also written at length in the synopsis in the programme of this production which I was lucky enough to see live at the Coliseum with these too in these roles. . Mary Skeaping did a similar thing to Giselle for the same Company reintroducing both music and mime scenes to that ballet. On scene being the mime scene for Berthe, Giselles mother warning Giselle and her friends of the Wilis. this scene is now back in most productions, very often Mime sequences relied on dancers who had performed them passing them on as rarely added to the notation, so all to often left out of some productions and eventually forgotten. It is possible Mime was considered boring in some productions in the mid 20th Century
@1psoas9
@1psoas9 3 года назад
@@siegfried923 Thank you: wow, you were there, saw them live. Special thanks for the report on Schaufuss's research. The "new" wedding material certainly looks compatible with the inventions one already knew.... and it's nice to see Effie have more vivacity than the bare-bones RDB variation, which makes her look REALLY boring, poor thing. It never seemed plausible to me that the contrast with the Sylph had to be so great. And the Sylph's lovely mime scene -"I've followed you since childhood, kept you close to my heart as you grew boy to man and went hunting in my woods', it's a knife in my heart, how could you love her?' is so lightly done, and so musical, it's the counterpart to her dance of joy with clapping hands -- there's a difference between dance and mime, but it's no more distinct than the colors of the rainbow, one shades into the other softly.

@alberodonaalberodona5888 3 года назад
@@1psoas9 what a wonderful comment, thanks! I did grasp the general sense of 'the Sylph to James' mime scene but did not grasp the full meaning! Thank you very much for the explanation...
