Diana Damrau and Juan Diego Flórez sing Violetta and Alfredo's Act III duet in the December 15, 2018, Live in HD transmission. Production: Michael Mayer. Conductor: Yannick Nézet-Séguin. 2018-19 season.
I saw it via Met Opera video on demand and was unexpectedly and absolutely blown away by this. A wonderful production, JDF, Damrau and also Kelsey sang fantasticly and the conductor and orchestra were in top shape as well. Really impressive. This will stay in my soul forever.
I have seen so many Traviata s in my life that I thought there won t be a performance surpassing those of the past but OMG this one ... priceless! Braviiii

Sorry, I cannot agree. He was a strange choice for Germont in every respect. He sounded like an injured bull & acted like a plank of wood. The audience at the Met is notoriously partisan & he is one of their own. Diana Damrau & Juan Diego Florez sang & acted him off the stage. It was ungenerous of the audience, but something they always seem to do when there is an American in the production.
@@dieterflorian865 I think when you use the word 'sharp' you actually mean 'strong' or 'aggressive. In English, there is a big difference between the two words, especially when speaking in terms of music--singing 'sharp' means singing slightly higher than the actual note. If 'aggressive' is what you mean, I completely agree with you. There is no vulnerability here.
JD Flórez is Lovely as always, but Diana sings too strong and loudt, her Mimic Is terrible, the MET have had the best Alfredo of the Time, bravoooo Juan Diego 🎵🎵🎵
Gonna watch this on MetOpera's free streaming service tomorrow. Tonight I need to do some previewing homework. And yes even though I've seen this opera 4 times at Met
Introduced at school to opera.la travita was the first. It took me until now to see vio latte , and to say the least Diana it was mind blowing .Many thanks.

Sparky…not fair….a Sutherland and a Pavarotti come every several hundred years…we were lucky to have lived in their time and that they were recorded together. Magic is rare . These two , maybe in time, will mature and their voices along with life’s wisdom will match and even surpass Joan and Luciano. But, we expect much. These trying are brave and their attempts are lovely. Sandra
I saw this performance. I found Damrau to be bitterly disappointing although her acting was superb. I couldn’t explain to my young son why the soprano arias in La Traviata are astonishingly exquisite until I returned home and played him some really great sopranos who really sang Violetta. She ruined the music...pitchy, barking and just nothing sonorous or beautiful. She was better here, in the third act. Act I was the most disappointing. Juan Diego does have a small voice but a beautiful one. Considering this was the Met it was astonishing these two voices represented the “best.” I get the comments that Juan Diego is a “pop singer” because of his appearance, mannerisms, repertory and small voice. But I really enjoyed his performance despite these considerations. Yannick controlled the orchestra beautifully but I found the tempo a bit slow...especially in the opening overture. Sorry to all of you who thought Damrau was great: to me...an utter disappointment.
I saw JD in a Luicia di lamermoor production in Barcelona's Liceu a few years ago and thought exactly the same as you have described: beautiful but small, voice. Soprano Elena Mosuc had never been among my favorites until that day, when she shined and really ate JDF alive in every scene.
Erethras Elena Mosuc has sung his Lucia Part bravourious She was very good in The Bad Scene too And in The whole Opera, better than Yperetyatko in Vienna 🎵🎵🎵
Thank you for an honest comment from someone who has seen it in real life as it is difficult to tell from this recording that doesn't show their voices in house very well.
Cheers! Juan. Diego is a charming light lyric tenor suited for lyric bel canto. He is a great singer but lacks the weight, gravitas and richness of tone for. Verdi. Luv, diana
How come JDF is wrong in everything with the exception of, maybe, Puritani? Not very wrong but nothing seems to fit well. Verdi, Massenet, even Donizetti and most Rossini. He isn't right even in Barbiere, but they have departed from the original decades before JDF began to sing it.
