My God, such sublime music making--I see EXACTLY what you are trying to accomplish, and it is like I am hearing/seeing this piece for the First Time. I can also see that for what you are looking for, there can be even more--I hope to see you accomplish that or get even closer to that sometime. Magnificent rehearsal, and we need to see much more for the sake of great music making.

Among many others this piano concerto from master Johannes Brahms is one of the very closest one to my heart. Teodor is a phenomenal, talented, skilled intelligent and sensitive musician. One of the most genuine and authentic conductor in our days.

The music is a true dream that only a genius could written. The pianist is fabulous and amazing not only for the sensibility and sublime interpretation that touches us in the deep of our soul. The divine music produced by Brahms is magnificent, fantastic and unforgettable . Thanks for this wonderful recording. The orchestra interpretation and the explanations given by Currentzis are extraordinary in order to appreciate even more this masterpiece.

I read some negative, harsh comments. It makes me feel sad, because I don’t see any malice in Currentzis. From a musician perspective: I feel that there is some spectacularization and dramatization on Currentzis’ part. But it’s only to bring to light, to the open, some otherwise really hidden and non-communicable aspects of this music. Maybe someone will argue that music is ineffable and meant to be experienced inside, and that any externalization is a simplification. I agree, but Currentzis here is showing us very valuable tracks, not as an authority, but as a friend. Then it will be your inner work to take back this music inside, and experience it with through your own lens, maybe ultimately disagreeing with what was said in this lecture. As a final note, even simplifying is an art, and in my experience nobody does it better than Currentzis today. Schiff is also a very good example. At least appreciate this effort on their part.

I think Currentzis is trying to inject the emotional sensitivity of the music into the members of the orchestra. There would be many ways to do that but he choose to do it his way. He wants them to play more than the notes on the page. He is sculpting the music to his vision, and who is to say it is right or wrong. It is his sculpture, let him do it his way. As an amateur musician, I am impressed with the professionalism of the orchestra, the conductor and the soloist. I very much enjoyed that he broke the piece into understandable parts. If any profession should allow ego to show, it is music. We usually play for ourselves and to be praised for our good works. Don't hate him for his ego, praise him for letting it guide the orchestra to a great performance.

I don’t understand why someone said the playing is much worse than before his rendering. It’s remarkable to me how he transformed the solo cello sound in 20min. It is simply much more interesting and complex. It doesn’t matter if he is being pretentious or sincere in his gestures and words. The result speaks.

There is one thing that I had not thought of so far regarding classics. I mean those music pieces which are not familiar to my ears, causing to not like some composers. Well, it seems that someone needs some interpretation to listen to music and to be fulfilled by senses. And that's what this rehearsal did to me! Thank you for making love this piano concerto, to understand, to dream, to want to live, to fall in love again and again... Thank you Theodore! You make us Greeks so proud! God bless you ♥🙏

I enjoyed how this rehearsal, focused on the subtle interplay between the instruments in this movement. Some listeners may comment on the arbitrariness of the images that Currentzis uses to highlight the beautiful transitions. Personally I found no harm in them, nor was I put off from hearing the music.

I had my share of dealing with people who suffer from NPD, and let me tell you, this guy, oh my.... A shame, he is obviusly talented.

Playing in masks looks so ugly. It is a profanation of music. Better not to play at all. And conductor do not wear mask, another absurd detail.

Horrible to see all musicians wearing these horrible masks! I'll never get used to it ;-(

I may be wrong but I seem to remember this movement as marked, 'Andante' - NOT Adagio or Largo. It should be taken at a walking tempo. This is a distortion of Brahms intentions.

I think people's criticisms have more to do with the verbose nature of his language and leadership. He is more interested in words than music. The fact is, he is so unwilling to step away from abstract poeticism that at times he ends up having little effect on the actual sound itself. I agree that the interpretive aspect of the art form is primary, but if the musicians are not easily translating whatever abstraction a conductor is attempting to convey, to the degree that they must repeat a phrase ad nauseam, that is a testament to the shortcomings of the conductor. Currentzis is more interested in his self-perceived profundity than he is actually extracting a musically profound conveyance by the orchestra - textbook musical narcissism. He takes so long to shape each phrase, not because he has such genius vision and demands that it be achieved, but because he's not as good at his job as he thinks he is. Amazing how easily people are conned into believing something is good because it comes in a pretty box has a nice label.

Preposterous , pretentious. By the way Immer Leiser was written after the piano concerto. All this music really is from the period after the Schumannn encounter. The real question is do we feel this in 3 or six and much and how swift are the crescendi . Not every phrase can end slower. Why doesn’t the guy show anything with his hands. Why does he not address the question of the direction of the 8th notes in the solo. Too much time necessary for all that love and darkness and tender and sensitive looks upward into wings.

What a load of crap! Just let the solo cellist play . He Is already playing beautifully. Stop infusing your ridiculous thoughts into music that already expresses sentiments you can’t possibly comprehend. It’s all a show and, unfortunately, the people in the audience are eating it up. I seriously doubt the fine musicians in the orchestra are taking this charade seriously. How sad to see these types of conductors wasting precious rehearsal time with this nonsense.

The only reason I can see for Teodor to speak English to a German orchestra is that if he spoke his native language (Greek), there would be almost zero chance anyone would understand him. Thus, his imagery in English may sound a bit “off” at times. What other choice does he have? And, a musician without “ego” is no musician at all.
