38 ex-lab chimpanzees, which have been under the protection of Gut Aiderbichl since 2009, were allowed back into freedom for the first time after decades of solitary confinement. A trial run that could not have been more touching. For the time being, 10 ex-lab chimpanzees were allowed to experience sun, wind and fresh air. In an enclosure that is over 2,000 square meters in size. For three young chimpanzees born in the experimental laboratory, it was the first time they came into contact with freedom. The others are chimpanzees that were taken to the experimental lab as babies. There are only three centers for traumatized chimpanzees in the whole world. One of them is located 40 kilometers outside of Vienna, in Gänserndorf: the Gut Aiderbichl Affen Refugium.
The back story:
In the 1970s and 1980s, small baby apes were taken from Africa to experimental laboratories. In the process, their mothers were shot. They defended their babies to the end. Then followed decades in isolated solitary confinement.
In 1997, the chimpanzees were finally freed in a corporate takeover by the pharmaceutical company Baxter. Baxter does not experiment on chimpanzees. Built a monkey house especially for them in a safari park, which they were allowed to move into in 2002. In 2004, the chimpanzees got into trouble again, and the safari park filed for bankruptcy. It was not until 2009 that they were allowed to become Aiderbichlers. Europe's largest sanctuary for rescued animals, Gut Aiderbichl, has now built 11 outdoor enclosures at a cost of three million euros. These were officially opened in September 2011. However, only small groups can visit the chimpanzees, with prior request and registration.
