Newsnight explores the story of the man who could be prime minister of the United Kingdom - and what that road to power may entail. Please subscribe here: bit.ly/1rbfUog
Sir Keir Starmer was elected leader of the Labour Party six months ago, when the United Kingdom was locked down against coronavirus.
Back then Westminster was preoccupied with the virus, and the norms of the opposition were temporarily suspended.
The scrutiny of the man who had only been elected as an MP five years earlier was perhaps more cursory than would have otherwise been the case. Sir Keir identifies as a "socialist", as did Jeremy Corbyn, so what makes his politics different?
And as a former member of Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet, was Starmer planning his leadership campaign as far back as last year's general election?
Newsnight’s Policy Editor Lewis Goodall investigates the story of the man who could be prime minister - and what that road to power may entail.
After this report aired on BBC Two, Unite the Union’s General Secretary Len McCluskey tweeted out the following:
“Before this gets out of hand, let me say language is important and I apologise to Peter Mandelson and anyone else if mine has caused hurt.”
Newsnight is the BBC's flagship news and current affairs TV programme - with analysis, debate, exclusives, and robust interviews.

If this current trend in politics were to continue, then Starmer would simply need to be the Biden candidate....not somebody who is necessarily known or understood by the masses, but instead just a competent alternative to a shambolic and divisive ruling administration

I think the damage of Corbyn will take a long time to repair, Starmer is trying his best I feel, but a lot of the party still feels Corbyn is the answer, which is worrying. Brexit was an issue in the Labour Party, but it was an issue due to Corbyn not taking a stance for the best part of 3 years, until conference forced him to take a stance (yes Starmer led the remain faction, but it wasn’t because of him the 2nd ref was the policy decision , conference voted for it!)

For Diane Abbott and Ian Lavery to cite Remain as a complaint against Keir Starmer shows an astonishing level of willful ignorance on their part. Do they not remember that little thing in recent history known as the 2019 General Election, where leading Remainers finally had to accept that remaining in the EU is no longer an option, and which took place roughly five months before Starmer's election as Labour leader?

The only reason why the Labour Party has long been relegated to perpetual state of Opposition is solely because the Conservatives have always excelled in appealing to the 'basest instincts' of many working-class, whose economic livelihoods have been decimated by the most pernicious after-effects of Thachterism that have haemorrhaged the historical Labour-friendly heartlands for the last four decades plus. My only concern is if Sir Keir Starmer will be able to effectively capitalise on the 'electoral fatigue' arising from an ensuing atmosphere of the Conservatives' political bereftness over time. The fact that former Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn equivocated on Brexit most certainly DID NOT help matters for the party. There is absolutely no doubt that Brexit has turned out to be an ugly manifestation of the extremely divisive American-style culture wars, which could threaten to rip apart the British 'body politic.'

How does that make any sense? Blair, the man who supposedly ditched the working class, won the most seats than any Prime Minister in modern history. But apparently the reason Corbyn lost so badly was because of Blair? You’re logic makes absolutely no sense. It’s pretty obvious what happened, Corbyn went too far left (he was endorsed by the Communist Party of Britain) and lost horribly while Blair, easily one of Labour’s most centrist leaders, won with 469 seats. If Labour wants to win their going to have to go to the centre again.

Labour are bonkers they believe in magic. Labour think they can generate a 3 component model with very little room for anything else. One dolop of cash for big government and the public sector, One big dolop of cash for big business and one dolop of cash for consumer only people. Look at the stats the market rocketed up and rocketed down to the same position it started and neither women nor men were more economically active that bit rose for a few years and flat lined for the rest. Tories are more slow but constant builders. yes they work with big business but they benefit with higher economic activity rates. The women were doing really well before Covid getting up the ladder and bringing on more equality along with helping the whole workforce reach a good optimal. in time as people reach an optimal where those that want to work are all working and people are more inspired overall not to be lazy then the Standard Of Living will go up hopefully with a good ecological emphasis. In time the Liberal Democrats might become a better voice for social issues and in time they might have a more optimal grasp of the economy.

@Pat M Well that’s a very interesting take on what went on. My take on it is different. As I’m not on first names with “Jeremy”, I prefer to call him Corbyn. He led the Labour Party into a massive electoral defeat. Cries of betrayal are a bit absurd.....is that not what Richard 111 cried as he was poleaxed at Bosworth ? Come on. He had choices. He had political judgements to make. He failed. He failed the people of this country who wanted an alternative to this mob who have once again regained power. Or perhaps he succeeded in some bizarre way , for some long term political aim. My take on it is that he failed, period. As for McClusky , he should focus on the interests of his members, but if I was a member , I would consider him a failure too, and would want him out.

Here in New Zealand, I do vote for the Labour Party here, in fact Jacinda Ardern is my local MP as I live in Mt. Albert but if I lived in the UK, I'd probably vote for the Tories for the sole reason that I'm against anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. I don't like how the Labour Party ignored and tolerated (if not promoted) anti-Semitism under Corbyn and how the Labour Party ignored Rakhia Ismail's complaints of racism and Islamophobia. I completely agree with Labour most of their policies but if I were in the UK, I could not in good conscience vote for them. Voting UK Labour is like voting for Hitler in Germany or Trump in America.
@trekkienzl2862
@trekkienzl2862 3 года назад
@Richard R I don't care about their condemnation of Israel regarding it's actions in Gaza or their mistreatment of Palestinians. What I do care about is how Jewish Labour MPs were forced to leave the Labour Party because Corbyn tolerated anti-Semitism within the party and did nothing about the anti-Semitic abuse Labour MPs had to deal with. Also, did you read what I wrote about how UK Labour also tolerated Islamophobic abuse against Rakhia Ismail?
@stoufer2000
@stoufer2000 3 года назад
Lol, as if you voted for labour in new.zealand...ahahahahaha. Anyway, it appears you bought a cheap ADL dictionary, there was very little to no substantiated anti semitism' in the labour party, but there was a lot of unsubstantiated smearing by a minority of Zionist anti democracy people including a handful of Jewish people, and unfortunately rabbi mirvis. Criticism of Israel, and its third party American Zionist supporters who seek to meddle in other countries affairs is not anti semitism

I hope you’re not offended, but I don’t give a toss for your point of view, because you don’t have to live here. On the other hand if your grandmother emigrated from these shores as a baby, you get the right to come over here and earn a living. Can the average Brit do the same ? The answer is No. Keep your nose out of our affairs.

A man, who lacks the true Spirit of God is like a car without an engine, and is fit only for the scrap heap! You will not find the true Spirit of God in a religion; not even in that of the Pope and Christianity, but only in Immanuel (the anointed one) called Jesus. For he is the Son of man and the true prophet sent by God, to be always our one Teacher and to set us free from all religions… “Our God is a God who saves us, in the Lord God’s hand lies escape from death.” - (Psalm 68: 20) - “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” - (The prophet Immanuel, called Jesus the Messiah, at John 4: 24) - “In truth I tell you, anyone who gives heed to what I say and puts his trust in him who sent me, has hold of eternal life and does not come up for judgement, but has already passed from death to life.” - (Jesus, at John 5: 24) - “You shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” - (at John 8: 32) - “When you pray, go into a room by yourself, and shut the door. Pray to your Father who is there in the secret place; and your Father who sees what is secret will reward you. In your prayers do not go babbling on like the heathen, who imagine that the more they say the more likely they are to be heard. Do not imitate them. Your Father knows what your needs are before you ask him. This is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, Your kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven, Give us today our daily bread, Forgive us the wrong we have done, as we have forgiven those who have wronged us. And do not bring us to the test, but save us from the evil one. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, for ever. Amen. For if you forgive others the wrongs they have done, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive others, then the wrongs you have done will not be forgiven by your Father.” - (Jesus, at Matthew 6: 6-15) - “Pass no judgement, and you will not be judged. For as you judge others, so you will yourselves be judged, and whatever measure you deal out to others will be dealt back to you.” - (at Matthew 7: 1-2) - “Truly I tell you; if anyone obeys my teaching he shall never know what it is to die.” - (John 8: 51) - “Always treat others as you would like them to treat you: that is the Law and the Prophets. Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it. Beware of false prophets, men who come to you dressed up as sheep while underneath they are savage wolves. You will recognize them by the fruits they bear.” - (Matthew 7: 9-16) - “I am the gate; anyone who comes into the fold through me shall be safe. He shall go in and out and shall find pasturage. The thief comes only to steal, to kill, to destroy; I have come that men may have life, and may have it in all its fullness.” - (John 10: 9-10) - “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” - (Matthew 7: 21) - “I am the resurrection and I am life. If a man has faith in me, even though he dies, he shall come to life; and no one who is alive and has faith shall ever die.” - (John 11: 25-26) - “I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world” - (John 12: 47) - “Whoever then will acknowledge me before men, I will acknowledge him before my Father in heaven; and whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.” - (Matthew 10: 32-34) - “Any plant that is not of my heavenly Father’s planting will be rooted up. Leave them alone; they are blind guides, and if one blind man guides another they will both fall into the ditch.” - (Matthew 15: 13-14) - “I am the way; I am the truth and I am life; no one comes to the Father except by me. If you knew me you would know my Father too.” - (John 14: 6-7) - “The disciples came and asked Jesus, ‘Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven?’ He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. If anyone causes one of these little ones-those who believe in me-to stumble, It would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!’” - (Matthew 18: 1-7) - “Though many are called, few are chosen.” - (Matthew 22: 14) - “An expert in the law, [a leading religious Pharisee] tested him with this question: ‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ He answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind. That is the greatest commandment. It comes first. The second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. Everything in the Law and the Prophets hangs on these two commandments.’” - (Matthew 22: 35-40) - “There is no greater love than this, that a man should lay down his life for his friends.” - (John 15: 13) - “Do not call any man on earth ‘father’; for you have one Father and he is in heaven. Nor must you be called ‘teacher’; you have one Teacher, the Messiah.” - (Matthew 23: 9-10) - “Take care that no one misleads you: For many will come claiming my name…” - (Matthew 24: 4) - “Many false prophets will arise, and will mislead many; and as lawlessness spreads, men’s love for one another will grow cold. But the man who holds out to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the Kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the earth as a testimony to all nations; and then the end will come.” - (Matthew 24: 11-14) - “One of the criminals who hung there also mocked and taunted him: ‘Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself, and us!’ But the other criminal rebuked him. ‘Have you no fear of God? You are under the same sentence as he. For us it is plain justice; we are paying the price for our misdeeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.’ And he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ He answered, “I tell you this: today you shall be with me in Paradise.’” - (Luke 23: 39-43) - “For it is my Father’s will that everyone who looks upon the Son and puts his faith in him shall possess eternal life; and I will raise him up on the last day” - (John 6: 40) - “teach them to observe all that I have commanded you. And be assured, I am with you always, to the end of time.” - (Matthew 28: 20) - Yours always, in true Spirit and in our one given prayer, 2gointruth, Wednesday the 21st of October, 2020: - (Matthew 5:14-16) - Where every minute (of both day and night) can be a new beginning for any one of us. Let it always be you.
