So Lola came back from the vet appointment today here in Boston and the vet , technician and receptionist told us that whatever we were doing with Lola from the past 2 months was wonderful !! She did great!! She behaved so well (calm, attentive and polite!) and she lost her extra pounds!! She is not longer considered an overweight dog! Thank you Uncle Stonnie for your amazing job!!

Stonnie i love your whole approach to training dogs, especially your attitude to exercise, I was told to walk my dog for 5 mins for every month and I really thought I was doing the best for her health and future mobility. Recently I have bought a Labrador, not a chubby although I am from the UK, she is a working lab. I went to a local gundog club and was told how many pips on the whistle (3 although I tend to do 2 unless I am panicking then its a lot more toots !) Also told not to retrieve anything yet and not to think about stop whistle, oh dear too late! All 'training ' is play and fun and she loves it. Why do people make it so complicated. 😁

I love "English chunky" Lola. You are totally right, there's something about chunky Labs that we want to hug them, they are sweet. And you are totally right about their rear end strength carrying their weight. Unfortunately this chunky Labs do suffer from many joint problems. But you have to admit their temperaments are awesome... so sweet

Absolutely heartbroken….our American k-9 working dogs have been left behind in crates at the Kabul airport in Afghanistan……..this administration refused to allow the dogs on the last flights out………. I apologize for posting here….. just extremely upset…….. I have nothing but the upmost respect for these dogs because this fantastic channel ……. I pray that somehow these patriot dogs can be rescued….. as well as the Americans stranded in that country…..

Going out in all kinds of weather. Reminds me of a good friend of mind that does a lot of endurance riding on her horse. Her Heeler gets to run along on the shorter rides. On one of her rides, her husband said he would make her waffles for breakfast, but they were out of eggs. She saddled up her horse (it was SNOWING at the time. Heavy snow) she rode 4 miles round trip for those eggs! Our other friend has chickens! :) like you, the weather doesn’t stop her from what she needs to do for her critters. :)

When I watch dog shows on TV, especially the last few years, I noticed how heavy the labradors looked; not how I remember labs looking in years gone by. Is this a new trend? Seeing flat coat retrievers in shows, they look the way I expect the labs to look. IMO it's a shame the heavier, stocky labs have become so popular. Dogs here in the states already have the reputation of being overweight. Now we have a breed that is purposely being bred to be, at least, heavy looking. Rant over.

I think your advice of walking and exercising your dog in all kinds of weather, no excuses, is great advice. My Collie loves to walk in the rain and snow and he doesn't care how harsh the weather is, he just has a great time. He seems almost immune to inclement weather. I had to toughen up when I got him.

Walking hurts my back but a bicycle sure doesn't. I run my Lab 3 miles everyday so a bad back is no excuse! p.s. We run using a leash hooked to an extention bar attached to the seat.

Hal's Pals -- I can really relate to back trouble with walking. I can't even ride my own bicycle any more. 😞 I really NEED some help getting serious exercise for me and my dog. I'm saving up for an adult tricycle. Letting my small pooch run with me on a tricycle will benefit both of us. He currently gets his running in by chasing a flirt pole for about ten minutes; he should have more opportunities to move/run for more sustained periods of time.

imagine that,, overweight dogs avoid exercise and therefore lose muscle! just like people. big belly, skinny limbs. Great advise as always. dont stay in your house worrying about getting sick so much you make yourself sick! At 65 I havent slowed a bit and I dont plan to. Thats one of the things I love about dogs. Unlike everyone else I know< they are always up for an outdoor adventure :)

Today was stormy and rainy, but the morning was good and my boys went down to the pond and had a great time. The old English lab slept a lot, but my pointing Griffon stayed with me all day. This evening, with a light rain we all went down again. The Lab swam twice, and the Griff retrieved a lot. And, Rusty had a wonderful evening. You are so correct in your philosophy about life and dogs. God bless you and your pups! Thanks.

I love your channel and training style but I'm not getting out in a lightning storm. That's crazy. In a light rain sure. I follow everything else you said tho and take my dog walking(mostly off leash) on the golf course. I live on a course btw so easy to do when golf traffic is low. So I'm lucky to have plenty of land to exercise my dog.

I had an English Setter when I was a kid, and the one in this vid reminds me of her. She loved to run and was one of the fastest dogs I've ever seen. She was also incredibly sweet and good-natured. English Setters are wonderful dogs if you have lots of space for them to get out and stretch their legs every day.

From UK and owned 3 pedigre Labradors bred to Kennel Club standards ie chunky. Weight is an issue you have to keep an eye on as its bad for their joints just like us ! My own view is that Labradors are a breed which originates in Newfoundland, a very cold climate where they were used as working dogs by fisherman. Cold temperatures burn calories fast and I think their diet would have been high in fish (omega 3) which would have staved off the arthritis they are prone to. My recipe for a fit athritis free traditional chunky English Labrador: 2 hrs a day minimum walking/ running off lead in the mountains where I live and regular swimming in clean cold water, but dry them off thoroughly I winter. Salmon and other fatty fish twice a week. No snacking and two small meals a day. All my Labs lived to over 15 years of age and had very active lives.

Use vegetables for treats. My dogs that are in heaven now loved raw carrots. I am looking for a dog to be my 5th service dog. My last one was stolen almost 5 years ago now. Have been looking since then. I have always trained my own from puppyhood. Because of mobility problems I have now I can’t teach the obedience & a few other things. Can’t afford a full train service dog because of the $60,000-$80,000 price. I am praying for another male German Shepherd from working lines. You stay safe & have a blessed week

Stonnie...big question...nutritional timing...Im a personal trainer and know how important it is...just welcomed our first ever puppy, now 12 weeks, female English lab BLACK thanks to you and your informative videos I discovered during covid....soooo do I feed her before our big excercise in the morning or after? and how how long do I wait if before...Ive tried it both ways....thanks for your imput!! Or perhaps make a video about it!! Sleep, nutrition, and then exercise ...same for dogs?
@anmolsingh9025
@anmolsingh9025 3 года назад
there is one person who dislikes this video. what is there to dislike about a polite video explaining how to exercise overweight dogs? PS- Gene: POMC This gene influences eating behavior. An ND or DD result would predict higher food motivation compared to NN result, increasing the likelihood to eat excessively, have higher body fat percentage, and be more prone to obesity. checkout commercially available genetic testing for dogs - you can get it for $150. And if you get anything other than NN then ensure a balanced and controlled diet after first year of dog's life.

Thanks for all the great content! Is there any chance you could share your thoughts about how to deal with dogs with strong prey drive for people who live where there is lots of wildlife. We live in the mountains in Switzerland surrounded by deer, ground hogs (marmottes), chamois and ibex (mountain goats), wolves as well as skiers, mountainbikers, snowmobiles, quadbikes etc. and our lab goes after everything if she's off the lead but is well behaved on the lead...

I absolutely enjoyed this episode Stonnie! My 5.5 year old Chocolate Lab is a English style and I’ve only had her since April after she was retired from a breeder after three litters. Your knowledge and philosophy on this topic is very helpful as I try and control and get her weight down a bit. Am I guilty of maybe too many treats in the initial getting to know her, yes I am. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Also as you said they are such good natured and loveable dogs, that everyone who meets her wants to treat her! And if there’s treats at the off leash park my Saje is your friend for sure. So I have to be very aware of this and say no. Many thanks Stonnie for all your lessons and teachings. Peace and Calm. 👍🏻😎🇨🇦

I have a 3 year old English chubby! I have to be soo strict with her diet or she will pack on the pounds like crazy. She's so heavy set....dense......tons of loose saggy skin. And she's petite! Even her training treats have to be only a few calories each. And this is on top of the fact that she hikes an hour a day in the hills/woods, etc....

How do you get a pointer to stop pulling
@qdav5
@qdav5 3 года назад
In my experience, it's nearly impossible unless they are already very, very tired ... and it takes a lot to make them tired. That's true of all of the pointer and setter breeds. They have LOTS of energy and are bred to want to "cast-out" to about a quarter of a mile away and then work their way back to you. If you can take your dog to some large fields (at least 10 acres) and let him/her run free, then you will never see a happier dog.

@@bobsmith-qu2oq -- well, I'm 71 with no balance and need to walk with a rollator. As far as I'm concerned, I don't go out in bad wet weather. Can't walk in snow either and I always loved walking in the snow. The rollator doesn't 'roll' in snow and I can't walk outside without it. Should I slip and fall, I literally couldn't get back up. Your parents are very fortunate.
