It's called "contact juggling". Bowie couldn't do it, so when you see him juggling, they're someone else's hands from behind. Incidentally, the ballroom scene inspired the "Labyrinth of Jareth Masquerade Ball", which is held every year in Los Angeles now.
@@TavareIsUniquefun fact that you probably already know but the ballroom choreography was done by the lady who plays dr. Crusher in Star Trek the next generation.
I still love that all the characters Sarah meets are objects in her room before she enters the Labyrinth and that her dog reappears as Ambrosius. Even David Bowie is there in a picture on her mirror.
There’s a behind the scenes of the making of this movie. They talk about all of the effects and how they did them. It somehow makes it more magical seeing it! Also Hoggle’s face was controlled by remote control and there was someone inside.
To answer the question in the title. Yes, yes it is. David Bowie is such an icon. Him as the goblin king is S tier camp. And I love it. And also his song GOES HARD.
@@nikwalters1029 oh they do. The music/visuals for this movie is so fantastic. It was a great era for fantasy movies with this and never ending story. I also just LOVE David Bowie
If I was Sarah, I'd say bye bye baby and HELLLLLOOOOO DAVID BOWIE! Totally would've chosen the Goblin King haha. My mom also has always said the same thing about this movie. We both have matching Goblin king tattoos.
The sets were the magic of Henson, the dialogue definitely feels like Lucas, and the design was Brian Froud. It's all so lovely. They had a whole list of artists they were considering for Jareth, but I think they got the best one. Also, there is a small bit of CGI, but it's only the owl in the credits, nowhere else. Everything else is practical thanks to the Henson Company. Oh, and Toby was played by a child named Toby Froud, who was Brian Froud's son. :)
RIP the the beautiful and sublimely talented David Bowie. For more of his acting talent - The Man Who Fell To Earth (be careful, it's weird), Tony Scott's The Hunger, and Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence.
Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence is wonderfully acted, particularly by David. Also completely realistic, sad, and crushing. Like war really is ... so sad and terrible.
The thing with the riddle is, it's a classic one, and they kept sticking it everywhere. It kept bugging me that I didn't get it, so eventually it clicked: A way to understand it is to think if you ask Doorknob A, "Would Doorknob B say that _you_ would say this door leads to certain death?" and the answer was "Yes," that would mean 1 of 2 things: 1) A always tells the truth, that B would say Yes, and that means that B tells lies, so the answer is No. 2) A tells lies, that B would say Yes, so B would actually say No. Be tells the truth, so the answer is No. But she could've just asked them the color of what she's wearing like you said, they forgot to put in the script that she could only ask one question
Lol, Jennifer Connelly was one of the Jennifers back in the day, Aniston, Lopez, The Rocketeer is another movie with her you might like. Thanks for the reaction, it was great. Loved all your little jokes and appreciation for the material. 14:28 me neither, but there's a welsh name Gareth that's similar
My sister and I (25 and 27) watched Labyrinth for the first time as young teens (like 13 and 15 probably). We watched it over and over because it's so wildly camp-y. I'm not even sure how we didn't see this but saw so many other iconic movies of this style and era as babies (Neverending Story, The Dark Crystal, Muppets, Legend, Willow, etc.). We watched it on a whim and just fell in love lol
17:00 "Shining. If I say shimmering, I'm going to have to say Splendid." WTF! Don't know how the hell I caught that reference, because I haven't heard that song in almost 20 years! As soon as you said that, I hear 🎶"Tell me princess, now when did you last let your heart decide?"🎶in my fracking head! THREE words and I got the lyrics of a song I haven't heard in decades popping into my brain.🪔
I watched this movie so many times and listened to the soundtrack on cassette so many times that I broke both tapes!🤦🏼♀️🤣 Still crushing on Bowie in this one after 36 years lol.❤
This is my all time favorite! Thank you for correcting yourself lol. I hate when people say *THE* Labyrinth and say they are a fan. Also... Jennifer Connelly is pretty famous lol. She won an Oscar for A Beautiful Mind and was just in the newest Top Gun movie. The Chilly Down guys scared the crap out of me as a kid! I still hate that scene.
Oh is that what they're called? "The Chilly Down Guys" they're freeeaaakky! I will check out Top Gun: Maverick after I catch up on the old movies. It will be nice to see her again and see how she's progressed over the years.
For solving the riddle of which gatekeeper is lying and which one is telling the truth, it’s said that the liar ALWAYS lies and the honest one ALWAYS tells the truth, so I figure the one who explains the rules at the beginning would have to be the honest one.
Hi flare. Been a while. 😊. I used to be scared of this as a kid. As an adult I love this film, nostalgic. Never ending story is a good one aswell. Also, the dark crystal. 😊. Have a good week xx
Fragile Rock was awesome! (Watched with my son.) And I fell in love with David Bowie when I was 12 ... until NOW. Now? Post-2016? Of course. All I have to do is navigate the labyrinth. And I will!!!
So nerd confession time: my sweet 16 party back in 1994 was based on the masquerade ball from this film. My mom got my hair big like that and sewed me a similar dress. Costumes were required.
Someone else just commented that there's a ball held in Los Angeles yearly that was made in honor of the film. I want to experience something like this at least once.
This film has and will always be a favorite! As an 80’s kid we had some great dark fantasy movies to fall in love with. Bowie was a first crush, his voice is amazing. I still rock out to the soundtrack. Jennifer Connelly has a long filmography, and she was a great supporting character in Top Gun Maverick. Have you watched Legend (1985) with Tim Curry?
Between this and 'Legend,' I had it in my head to use glitter in decor. Now, I could have glued it, but no, I just... tossed it all over the place in my basement room. I can't even begin to tell you how bad of a decision that was. That was almost twenty years ago and it's STILL embedded in the floors and STILL tracks through the house if we have to go back there.
i remember seeing this movie in theaters in what i want to say was 2018. Anyways, i fell in love with it and it is now my comfort movie, I collect Labyrinth themed items and bring it up as much as possible. My sister has also done the math and ive watched it at most 1500 times that she could count lol.
Only the beginning owl in the beginning credits is one of the first time cgi was used. One of my favorite movies since I was a kid. I knew it so well that I knew every word and just listing to the music I knew which scene it was from. Multiple people controlled different parts of Hoggle's head. Eyes, eyebrows , mouth. Brian Henson did one and the voice of Hoggle .I was scared too of the fire gang when I was younger.
People watching Labyrinth for the first time: This is kinda weird and scary, is this what kids' movies were like in the 80's? People who grew up watching Labyrinth: Unashamedly singing along to every song.
BTW years later hoggle was found in an unclaimed airport baggage. He was all deteriorating & scared the crap out of the airport staff until they realized what they had.
If you are curious to watch Bowie in something else, his best performance was likely in _Merry_ _Christmas_ _Mr_ _Lawrence_ done a couple years before this one. Takes place in a POW camp during WWII, so a much different type of film.
You should watch it. If you want to watch a movie where African-American men are brave, are heroes, are noble we and wonderful--watch the history of WW2, and how African-Americans worked to bring down Hitler. The most famous actress of her c time, Bette Davis, bet her career on both creating and insisting African -American soldiers have equal rights by integrated the Hollywood Canteen. (Let's not argue about Bette attending high school in Harlem and that she had a black boyfriend in the 1920s.)
The knight and knave puzzle, guarding the two doors, is a bit complicated. But it was solved by seeking the lie. She asked one solider what the other would say. So if she asked A what B would say, if B is the liar, A has to say B’s lie as that’s what she asked. If B was honest, A would misconstrue B’s answer into a lie. So if I asked if a door leads to certain death in that format and the answer was yes, you would know that is the door to take.
Omg I love this movie! I grew up wanting to be Sarah because I had a huge crush on David Bowie 🤣 And yes, Flare I think we all would like to play with magical balls....I mean magical crystal balls 😏 😂 David Bowie in those tights 👀 but I never saw that when I was young, my mind wasn't thinking like that yet 😅 Thanks for the reaction. I enjoyed it so much 😄 😊
The fireys scared me a little but I liked them. I was about eight years old when this came out but probably nine or ten when I first saw it. My cousin is only a year younger than you and, last I checked, she still hates them. 🤣
I *just* realised, after many times of seeing this film, that the two guards puzzle could be much simpler than she makes out. Surely the one explaining the rules in the first place is the one most likely (although admittedly not guaranteed) to be telling the truth...
The face for Hoggle was manipulated by a few different puppeteers mechanically. The mouth, eyes, and eyebrows were all separately moveable. I'm okay with this movie being one big music video. 😁 Also, not David Bowie's face highlight being so on point in 1986.
If I remember right, the first Harry Potter book was published in 1997, so it's entirely likely that this is where the inspiration for the name Hogwarts came from.
I haven't watched this in a hot minute! Can I give you a recommendation? If you enjoyed Labyrinth, check out Return to Oz! It's just as crazy... Fairuza Balk is in it (from The Craft but much much younger). If you're going down the retro path, I also recommend Willow! Thank you for sharing this! It was a great throwback to childhood!
Fairuza Balk was also in a movie called The Worst Witch as a child. It has a similar vibe to Harry Potter and I think was also based off a book series. The movie also stars the legendary Tim Curry, Charlotte Rae, & Diana Rigg. Diana Rigg more commonly known now as Lady Olenna of the House Tyrell!
YES!! Ive never clicked so fast on a video! Your reaction was so wholesome! This movie was my gay awakening because of David and his “assets” 😂 its one of my favourites, along with Never Ending Story!
The director is Jim Henson, the puppeteer, who did yoda, but not to be mistaken with George Lucas, who created star wars. Jim brought miss piggy up on a yoda scene 4 star wars & killed the whole cast in laughter.
1:19 The Owl at the beginning is and always has been CGI, I believe it is the only CGI, all the others, certainly all the ones that people interact with, are practical effects. Yes, Jennifer Connelly has done a lot of other films since she did this. Not all were great, but that can be said of any actor. 5:20
OK! I GOTTA SAY IT! George Lucas had little to do with this movie besides being a producer. The goblins and everything you thought was him was Brian Froud! He and Jim/Brian Henson did the design and puppet work
18:50 "Is this a PG-13 movie?" The PG-13 rating started in 1984, two years prior to Labyrinth coming out. Since Labyrinth doesn't have cursing, partial nudity, violence (actual), drug references, or sexual themes it has just a PG rating. Before 1984, the PG rating had a really wide umbrella of what fell under it. The movie E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (1982) was PG and it is harmlessly mild compared to Logan's Run (1976) also PG but had violence, drug use, and full nudity... that's a big difference from one extreme to the other for a PG rating.
Movie was quite violent. The flesh eating piranhas that those goblins had. Then, there's the flying heads. Kind of exorcism like. It was quite dark for a kids movie. I think it should be a teen movie or a young adult. Don't think the movie is suited for children under 8.
Please don't give credit to George for Jim and his team character and world building design. George may have helped with direction and some production, but the style is all Jim Henson's.
