Grandad gave me my first .22 at 4 years old. He drilled safe handling in to me right from the start. Couldn't agree with you more Mr. Warren.

I was 5 when my dad bought me my first .22 rifle. I didn't get to shoot it right away because there were houses nearby and we thought a .22 would have too much range and put people at risk. So I did most of my marksmanship with an air rifle. I started with a surplus Romanian training rifle and eventually moved up to an rws 34. I ended up getting good enough with the air rifle that I could hunt and I never needed a firearm until much later. By the time I did pick up a rifle to start shooting full time I was already a well ingrained marksman. What I am trying to say is it is perfectly plausible to teach someone extensive marksmanship without them ever once firing a firearm.

I bought my first deer rifle when I was 18. I was lookin' at a Remington 7mm mag. My Dad talked me into getting a .270 Remington, since the cartridge is basically a .30-06 necked down to a .270, and the ammo is much more affordable. Dad was right. That was 32 years ago. Still have my .270. I've put a bunch of deer in the freezer with that rifle. It will be my son's rifle when I can't make it to the stand anymore, or simply pass on. Hopefully, simply pass on!
