My dear Gaga , back in 2012 I was being rushed to the hospital while having a massive panic attack . I was a 14 year old girl . I had cut my chest all over , I wasn’t myself . I couldn’t think , i couldn’t speak , I couldn’t breathe . I was out of it . My dad was driving me to the hospital and as I sat there in the backseat ,contemplating how my life was ultimately gonna end , this song came on the radio . Marry the Night . Even if I couldn’t think , breathe or reason , your words spoke to me . I was gonna marry the night , that night . I was gonna embrace who I was , my pain , my darkness and I was gonna come out , on the other side . A winner. Alive . Holding hands with it . Thank you because yes , your art saves people . My heart is with you .
I remember listening to Lady Gaga on my way to elementary school with my dad and little sister. My dad always said she was a remarkable woman and will be a great role model. The other parents judged him for saying that at the time. But she creates art and she advocates for those suffering with mental health and so much more. My dad was right.
it is so personal and sad... but at the end of the day it is amazing how she turns everything one day was a struggle to something artistic and gorgeous
Except she comes from an upperclass family, went to the finest schools and had some of the best connections. If she was anyone else she would have gone no where. Period. Granted I love her and what she shines on the world but she got to where she is by privilege, luck, talent, and at a much lesser extent artistic drive. Much like Andy Warhol.
Today’s “artists” work is based on Lady Gaga’s work around 2010. They are doing what Gaga did 10 years ago. What a genius Lady Gaga is. Legendary woman.
now her conversation with the nurse makes much more sense. she is such a strong and powerful woman. we are very blessed to witness such an immaculate artist like lady gaga. we adore you so much stefani
To this day, I think this is her absolute BEST video. She told us so much about herself here and it makes my heart ache because no celebrity made me feel seen the way she did. Her presence, her force on this earth, changed my life when I was in HS. This album came out when I was 16 and she made me want to scream to the top of the earth that I could love who I was. The world truly wasn't ready for her... Born This Way was one of the great albums of all time, and we truly didn't deserve her.
Watching this video after 8 years now, I realise that we weren't ready for her... I feel so bad for all the unfair and destructive criticism she recieved, just because she was doing something different from what everyone was expecting of her. We don't desserve her.
And yet I’m happy she came out when she did because there was no one like her. She showed me as a preteen/teenager how to be myself totally unapologetically and I’ll forever be grateful for that.
She was of a very unique time in western history (North American, European and Australian) Yes she was controversial but she was part of the social reawakening of the youth. People in their 20s and 30s are largely feminist, open minded and have begun to do away with racism and homophobia in the west etc. Gaga was part of that. The early 2010s were transformative and led to the huge social movements like marriage equality, abortion rights, women's equality, metoo and climate action. Women and men that stepped out of the ordinary at this time helped create a confident, Liberal and outspoken young people. If we got her today it would have been too late. She was era defining and her new album can't come quick enough
Lady Gaga revealed that she got pregnant after she was sexually assaulted when she was 19. (she never mentioned if she got abortion or miscarriage) Marry the Night is the most true, personal and special music video in Gaga's entire career. We should protect women against rape culture. ❤️ Edited: I have to agree with everyone, no culture should allowed to commit such an evil crime. We should protect everyone from rapists and abusers. 💓
Lady Gaga didn't say whether she had an abortion or suffered a miscarriage. I can pretty easily imagine how either would only add to her trauma. In any case, we shouldn't speculate or assume one way or another. Whatever happened, it's a particularly vulnerable topic she's not ready to discuss openly. That's fine. Privacy is a right. I just hope that one day she feels how powerful she actually is especially with the support of all her little monsters. I pray for the day she can name the criminal.
@venswim First of all, by telling boys how to be good people who respect women as equals and setting good examples for them. The first line of defense against rape culture is how we raise our boys. As for consequences, it's entirely possible to require a rapist to pay restitution for all the physical and emotional damage he's caused. And if his victim has a baby as a result, he should be required to cover all her medical expenses plus child support... and not be allowed any contact.
*Marry* *The* *Night* isn't just a song, it’s a cultural reset, a reason to breathe, and an escape from this cruel world. It's an art, the first gift you open on christmas, a hug from a loved one. it's everything you’ve ever wanted, everything you've ever need
How come nobody talks about that she is in the hospital because she was sexually assaulted (like in real life): @2:53 "No Intimacy for 2 weeks" and @3;34 "I have nothing left to lose". Gaga screams her pain through her music and we're standing there in adoration (or judging her looks) while the woman is incredibly hurt and suffering. I hope one day she will heal like she healed so many with her art.
@@firstrunnerup1675 Yes but the memories and trauma never leave even if you move past them. Gaga will continue to struggle with her mental health and it will go up and down but she is strong and matured
You made me cry. I relate to your words and wondering the same thing for so long now.. She is really an inspirational to this fuck up world.a brilliant artist ❤
Yash Jha One of my favorite quotes - "Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comforted." True art isn't something that's supposed to make you just look at it and pass on. It pushes the boundaries, challenges reality, makes you uncomfortable, makes you think. Art has always been this way; there's always going to be a little bit of rebellion and a message in every good work. I don't blame you for not understanding, some people never understand, but truly; good art is quite a sight to behold.
The intro changed my life , the way she portrayed trauma and art , fashion as a coping mechanism to heal really made me see things clearly . It made me feel safe and sort of happy because I 100% related to the whole song in many ways I can't explain . Lady GaGa saved my life in every way possible .
Same here. My husband and I might be getting a divorce and we have a 3 year old. Her videos are helping. I hope you find happiness and I wish you all the luck in the world. ❤❤❤
Of course not. Gaga is one of a kind. No female artist is at her level artistically. She is like a version of old madonna but with a lot of Michael Jackson inspiration and the rawness of Freddie Mercury. Those are the artist I see in her.
It's okay, if you're an intellectual like me, you've known she's an artist since 2008. She does not get the recognition she deserves, and it makes me sad to see her be forced to dumb herself down to stay relevant in the basic world that we live in today. I can't wait for her to come back in full force.
'And I did what any girl would do. I did it all over again.' She's so brave and strong for choosing life after the trauma she went through, she could've given up, it would have been understandable, but she started once again and she did it, she made it. I'm so grateful to have her with us, she is art and inspiration and the most beautiful person ❤️
@@dannydanielsnyc When she was 19 a producer sexually assaulted her and threatened to destroy her music if she refused, they had her locked in the studio for months and only let her out after she was too sick from being pregnant from that same rape. She then had a psychotic breakdown from that trauma and has been trying to overcome and heal over the years, which is what this video is about.
I've always had my speculations of why she was in the hospital and I had a feeling it was due to an abortion but didn't want to believe it. It's heartbreaking watching this video now knowing what really happened ♥️ we love you Gaga and we'll never leave you
This is just spooky. I did not know about the interview. I was just randomly scrolling youtube, and suddenly, out of the blue, I remebered that somebody told me months ago I should watch "Marry the night". It was right after 911, I think. I don't know why I suddenly remebered this. So, I searched for this and watched it. I thought straight away that the starting scene was from abortion clinic. The blood, the trauma, all the other girls, the "no intimacy for two weeks". So, I assumed she had an abortion in real life. I also remembered her performance "'til it happens to you" at Oscars and assumed she got raped. Came to comments to see if that was the case. I was confused why people talk about this like this is a new thing. I honestly thought this was something that was out in the open or at least acknowledged, since this movie is from TEN YEARS AGO. I googled and found out she had just TODAY revealed this from her past in an interview. I got chills. I got sick. I cried a bit. This video is incredible.
I thought the same thing when I first saw this video when it came out years ago. And now it makes sense and it’s so heart breaking. She was telling us by this video. 💔
it’s been nearly 10 years since this video came out and just now we got to really understand the meaning of it, i just want to say that Gaga is the greatest of our time, she is a fighter and an inspiration to me and many others, i love you Stefani.
@@ctvelcalzon77 she told she was a victim of a sexual assault. So this video metaphorically shows the hospitalization she went through in order to abort
It’s astounding how the video starts off at Gaga at her lowest but the last shot of this video she’s a rising Phoenix. This video will be praised more throughout the years. It’s amazing this was 3 years into her career.
I was born in 1998. I still remember the first time I saw a videoclip: I was in the computer room of my elementary school, and RU-vid just popped out on the internet. Shuffle led me to Poker Face. For sure I did not understand a thing of what I was seeing back then, but I know for sure in the darkest moments of my life you were one of those artists that made me marry the night. I could write a book about it, so I'll just stop here. Thank you for existing and illuminating the world with your unique energy, Gaga. For everyone reading this comment, remember: tar will slip away. Just cling to the little sparks of light you see. Soon it will be over. You are soldiers to your own emptiness. ♡
Burqa Goulding Girl, it's not an album. It's an experience. You have to watch the film to fully appreciate it. She's depicting how she was lost and in denial of the fact that she was, but she somehow manage to come home and heal. It's a story of resilience, generational grief, and forgiveness. It's a tale that often goes untold: how woman are mistreated and taken for granted, and it's normalized; how people find hidden passages in order to overcome things others couldn't endure, all of the sake of love.
Idk if it’s because I’m older, but now I get every single detail and scene in full. I can’t watch it without being emotional. It’s her journey of how her career came to be: from her darkest moments, the trauma of the assault + abortion and the rejection of the label, she became this force that with passion, hard work and kindness made her the Lady Gaga we all know. In the end she finally gets noticed by Interscope and becomes the Lady of the Night she had always dreamed of. She rose from her ashes like a phoenix.
I know it’s obvious, but I was very young at the time and English isn’t my native language so… you know… And of course the main “plot” was clear to me, but the details weren’t. Like the final scene and what she meant by “marrying the night”
Now this video makes much more sense. I came here after hearing the heartbreaking news. Lady Gaga is such a strong woman and a fighter for sharing to the whole world her story! We love you queen!
One of the most underrated Gaga videos. This was spectacular. One reason she is able to act so well in the current era is because she always played characters in her videos. Keep up the good work!
The character she played here was actually herself. She lived alone in ny worked as a stripper and was raped by a producer and overdosed on drugs and got dropped by record company. It’s a very sincere video about herself
@@angelicasantana3020 It is not the most viewed on RU-vid by far. This video has 93 million views. By comparison, Bad Romance, Just Dance, Poker Face, and even Perfect Illusion and Million Reasons have way, way more views than this video. We do all love this. I was just surprised by how little attention this video received compared to her other hits.
Isn't it funny how every other pop artist had to make long-ass artsy videos after her? Nothing beats this iconic masterpiece, she had guts to create this!
Fun fact: the rain in the video isn’t fake rain. It actually rained that day and the director wanted to film another day but gaga demanded to film and said that it was free rain, and so they did
GAGA is the queen of the 2010S & BEYOND !!!!!!!! 👑👑👑She raised all of us.... THE FASHION, THE MUSIC, THE VISUALS , THE VIDEOS, THE CHOREOGRAPHY, THE FAN BASE, THE IMPACT , THE INFLUENCE !!!!!!!!!!!! Like I'm sooooo proud to say i grew up on Gaga & am a Little Monster since I was a kid 💖🌟🌟🌟
This song is for everyone who is trying to embrace their pain so they can move on. For some people, there comes a time in their lives when they either learn to love the darker side of their past or they give up altogether. That's exactly what I am going throug rn.
Lady Gaga is an inspiration to everybody in this world. “Your pain matters”, that’s the message she wants to get through by showing this artistic version of her life trauma. She will always be my role model. She’s one of the strongest woman of our generation. I love you Stefani.
@@eyepatch5974 many people love her but a lot of people hate her as well, I remember back then my country’s media just keep shitting her saying she wear weird dresses to draw attention, and many still believe that till this day, not to mention the amount of people hate her in bones because her supportive towards lgbtq community, we truly treated her poorly.
@@imbadatdis it's true, she does wear extravagant s.. for attention. Also i remember how her fans attacked other movies with negative reviews just because they were in cinemas at the same time as her movie.
@@Madi_Ernar equalize fashion with get attention is kind of disrespectful, plus, you can’t telling me theres no terrible people amount a celebrity’s fandom, I hate K-pop fans the most tbh
This song is exactly what I needed rn. It's a reminder to me that this isn't the end. I've lost everything, including myself but this is a blessing. I get to restart, be the person I've always wanted to be and I can do it and so can everyone else. I pray that one day we can all tap into our power and create art. And by create art I mean to live authentically because that's true art and that's why we love Gaga so much. Because she's always been authentic. Live by that.
Fun fact: This is her first single that did not make it to the top 10 in Billboard Hot 100. Imagine she has 11 consecutive top 10 singles. Yes she did that. She was that powerful back in the days. Hit after hit after hit. And up to this day Gaga still holds the record of being the most downloaded artist in a single year; 2009, that is impossible to break.
I'm a metalhead, but 2011-12 was the craziest year of my life. A roller coaster. I was 26 and I would always be out trying to get high and drunk every night after work to my mom's apartment, which I had to myself because she was gone staying with her fiance. I was broke and lonely and drunk and I had no computer or laptop or anything to listen to music, so at night I needed music to take my mind off my self destructive thoughts. I turned on the cable tv at night by myself, put it on MTV, which I luckily had in our tiny selection of channels. I listened to MTV every night for weeks to hear this song. Everyone joked with me for listening to Lady Gaga but I didn't care because she is the real deal, and this song gave me emotional effects that allowed me to not want to die every night. This is very motivating music, and great when driving. I can't listen to only metal all the time, so luckily i discovered artists like Stephani, Rihanna, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Avicii, etc. Stephani is a true professional.
This song saved my life during the most intense depressive episode. I felt like everything was over for me but I started again and built myself back up. The last few months I have felt genuinely happy and life is only getting better. I have struggled and fought hard to be where I am in life and this song reminds me of that.
Rachel Alice I forgot that this song and video carried me through a depressive episode a few years ago. Just randomly decided to watch it again tonight despite being a long term Gaga fan and this comment also reminded me that I can start again, too. Thanks. I needed to read this while watching.
In the mainstream There's a fine line that this thankfully doesn't cross ie if it's too arty and deep/meaningful ppl ie the masses tend not to understand so it doesn't do so well
I love that she has taken stuff from different movies and video clips from the 80's/90's and made something new. I see Chrystal Connors from Showgirls, Marissa Tomei, A Chorus Line and so much more.
i remember staying up late at night so nobody would hear me cry, and i would have this song and video on repeat. there were very few things that would pull me out of my depression just for a moment. this was one of them. i find myself going through that again almost eight years later, and i’m so grateful i have this to fall back on. for anyone reading through the comments to find hope, i want you to know that it is there where you least expect it, and i want you to know you are loved and you are so strong. you deserve to be here. you deserve to live your own life on your own terms. you deserve to feel brave, and you’re brave for allowing yourself to feel vulnerable. in that way, she speaks to all of us. she was ahead of her time and may very well still be, but that’s okay, because we’ve had her for so long and we’ll have her for years to come. i hope you’re doing well, and i hope you find strength whether it be through this song or through something else
same. but i was also a dumbass singing "get ginger ready, call the camino front, won't poke holes in the seats with my heels cuz thass wherewemake loveeeee". i kid you not. i've been karaoking this for over a decade. all alone. in my defense, i don't know to drive or own vehicles, so know nothing bout vehicle names. and i was alone, no one to tell me the right lyrics. i could've turned the captions on but well, pride won't let me.
Only few appreciated her back then because they're saying that she's crazy and weird, but now she's changed into something more formal they gon' be saying thay she should've changed AHAHAHAHA like people what is wrong with you
She is such an incredibly strong, brave and resilient human. Her spirit is beautiful and she deserves nothing but love, happiness and peace. She always gives and gives and never asks for anything in return. We're so lucky to have her, we don't even realize. Her music, her artistry, her compassion and her bravery, are all healing people around the world every single day. Please stay strong, Stef. We love you. The world loves you ❤️ #WeLoveYouGaga
I can literally make an essay explaining why this video is a perfect example of a convoluted form of artistic expression: intimacy, comicality, synesthesia, pain, vividness, hope and specially poetry are a some of the concepts that compose this audiovisual piece.
fyi, its REAL rain, the director said that "we might have to shut the set because of the rain" and gaga said "are u crazy? youve got free rain and youre shuting the set? start recording!" i love her so much lmaoooo
Agora tudo faz sentido, fico impressionado com a capacidade de Gaga em transformar suas dores mais obscuras em arte e ajudar outras vítimas de violências a seguir em frente.
Knowing what we know now about Gaga's traumatic past - this opening scene is horrifying and so deep. I love GagGa - my God she is talented. There are so many depths and levels to her art
Yes! I love this even more now having all the context. And now for me it is even more special as I was in a psych ward for a bit and her opening monologue really resonated for me on that level.
@@bharatsharma1026 she was hospitalised after her sexual assault before she was famous. then when she got home she was dropped from her first label. the video is about her life during that time
@@bharatsharma1026 yup, a true artist. that's why she's surrounded by flames at the end of the video. she's a phoenix rising from the ashes even stronger
It took me going through rough dark times to fully understand the masterpiece in the beginning. I've cried countless times watching this video. I love Gaga, her art speaks to me greatly.
VNA Does Life I feel the same way. Sometimes, I look back at my life and change it in my head to make it seem less worthless... and the gummy bear & knife situation reminds me of an incident that ruined my life forever.
This is the best music video ever made. One of if not THE best Gaga song, her life story/struggles, the originality, choreography, fashion, cinematography, exc. After all this time since this video has been released I have never seen one hit like this. She deserves EVERYONE'S respect. An absolute artist in the truest form.
True! It at least should have won three Grammys. Everything here is so raw, rough and emotional, and it gets you every goddamn time. No wonder why it is my favorite short film/music video of hers and all time.
"Clinical psychology tells us arguably that *trauma* is the ultimate killer. Memories are not recycled like atoms and particles in quantum physics. They can be lost forever." - *Lady Gaga, 2011* 😢😢❤❤
Actualmente muchos estamos pasando por horribles y difíciles situaciones y esta canción nos puede ayudar a saber que no estamos solos y podemos seguir adelante pese a todo
Legend. She is so real. She depicts the things she actually went through in her life. She's not taking clothes off for show, it is what she went through. It's part of life. She's not afraid to show the whole world her real self and not give a shit. Her songs and music videos are incredible, not to mention her live performances. She's up there with Madonna and Michael Jackson.
u need go sit in a corner and cry for awhile. one of those chicks. wearing all black with random zippers on your pants always bitching about your daddy issues. grow the fuck up.
It took us 10 years to see your finished painting. Im humbled.. every narrative just brings out so much different emotions than 10 years ago. I thought i knew it all. Thank you, Gaga, for expressing your love and passion in such an artistic way. I really wish the best for you and the trauma you faced will eventually be healed.
