Lady Jane Grey: The Tragic Nine Day Queen

For nine days in 1553, Lady Jane Grey claimed the thrones of England and Ireland, an impertinence that caused her to be executed for high treason in February, 1554. Jane was a descendant of King Henry VII, a first cousin once removed of Elizabeth I, Mary I, and King Edward VI, and a grandniece of their collective father, King Henry VIII. By right of the last will and testament of King Edward VI, she was the successor to the British throne, largely because her Protestant faith made her a less disagreeable Monarch than the Catholic Mary, at least to British Protestants of the day.
At first, the Privy Council of England agreed with her accession and supported her claim to the throne, but in less than two weeks, political support for Mary Tudor led to her being proclaimed Queen, and Jane’s confinement in the Tower of London as a treasonous usurper. Lady Jane’s story, like many surrounding the English monarchy of the time, is one of intrigue, treachery, betrayal, religious intolerance, fear of Spanish power, and ultimately, royally sanctioned murder.
In that, it is not unlike many tales which swirl around the British Monarchy and its long and complicated history. Tales of hooded executioners, imprisonments in the Tower of London, ministers both loyal and duplicitous, secret missions, and public executions are all part of the history of the monarchy. Lady Jane’s tale is a relatively small part of that history. Yet, it is still worth telling.

Samuel Johnson didn't publish the first English dictionary until 1755. Prior to this all spelling variations were correct, meaning Jane didn't misspell Queen as it wasn't standardised during her lifetime.

Aside from his abolitionist views, Dr. Johnson was quite batty. He was so obsessed with that dictionary that he ignored his wife's affairs and even committed murder. And then the original dictionary was destroyed by some idiot named Baldrick.

Every time I hear her story i get angry on her behalf. I even feel for Mary here, cause in the end if Jane's family had behaved she might have lived longer as it seems Mary didn't want to order her death. But there were so many power hungry idiots around Jane, Poor thing...

She had no desire to be Queen. The Dudley’s wanted power and dragged her into it. I’ve even read that her marriage was a ‘love match’. Her husband wasn’t even interested

Back in that time period, people even spelled their own names differently. For example, Boleyn and Bullen were used interchangeably sometimes within the same document or sentence - by the Boleyn family as well as other people. So, spelling 'Queen' in a different way does not reflect lack of education or intelligence.

Correction, she was a queen of England, not the queen of the whole of Britain. The first person to become the monarch of the whole of Britain was James VI of Scotland, when he also became James I of England in 1603. I thought being an Englishman you'd know that.

The portrait shown of Mary Tudor at 13:08 is that of Mary Tudor, youngest sister of Henry VIII and not his daughter Mary I. Jane was Queen for 13 days not 9. Her spelling of the word Queen is totally accepted since at the time spelling was flexible and there was not only one way to spell any given word

Why is he talking like there's a race to just get the video over with??! Didn't make it very enjoyable to watch. And please stop harping on her education being lacking because she "misspelled" the word queen. I'm thinking whoever wrote this episode is the uneducated one if they don't realize that in this time period, spelling one word with multiple spellings was extremely common. Goodness. Also...history is full of people who make mistakes and do notorious and horrible things. Every country in ALL time periods has humans who do these things. So if these people truly believe "British history sucks", tell me why they're bothering to make these videos in the first place? Maybe it's this excuse for a documentary that sucked, not so much British history 💁‍♀️😅
