I love the sound of Lady Susan! Austen writes such great villains and characters that we love to hate. Great point about her protagonists - they are all very different from one another. Her ability to write about such a wide spectrum of personalities is so impressive.
Lady Susan is the best!! It is definitely a shorter, less polished Austen work. Part of me wishes Austen expanded it into a longer novel, but I also like it the way it is. When you're craving Austen's wit, but can't be bothered to read a full novel Lady Susan is always there. Love and Friendship with Kate Beckinsale is an absolute delight! Let me know when you've watched it. I'd love to chat :)
I'm currently rereading Lady Susan to prepare to make a video discussion of it, so it's interesting to hear your thoughts! Austen fans always tend to either love or hate this one, but it's interesting that most people I know who don't love Austen tend to like Lady Susan more than some of her other works!
I Totally Agree! Read it last year for the first time! I also wish she would have done “Lady Susan” as a whole length novel. I imagine it would of been marvelous and intriguing 🧐
Yes the film is FANTASTIC! Really nails Austen's humor and tone I think. And the cast is wonderful. Brilliant review Claudia! I need to return to this one. I remember liking it but not many details. And yes Lady Susan is such a great character! I almost find myself rooting for her at a lot of points because even though she's extremely unethical, she's also pretty much making the best out of women's horribly limited options, and making fools out of men who kind of deserve it. The only exception is her awful treatment of Frederica and her complete indifference to her daughter's misery - that's the part that makes me feel 'actually, no, you're mistreating someone who has nothing to do with your difficult circumstances and I can't truly root for you to succeed because of this'
I have just finished reading it for the 2nd time and love it even more than the first time I read it. And I also read it like it was a play. I wish it was. 😊. I am hoping to watch the movie as well.
Thank you for a great review! I got the impression that Austen got tired of writing in the letter form, that's why we got the very short summary of what later happened to the carachters at the end. I also wonder, do you think Austen might have read "Dangerous Liaisons" by Choderlos de Lachlos? It was a huge hit in the years before she wrote "Lady Susan". We might never prove this, but anyway :)
Congratulations on 10k! I've been watching and loving your videos ever since you had less that a thousand subscribers :) Oh, and I also thought Lady Susan was too short.
Lady Susan is an evil character. No doubt about it. Still, her presence and acting let the reader find out how ridiculously weak personalities the men around her have. They are easily deceived by her like children. Perhaps Reginald needs such a lesson to be taught. Therefore, no harm is done to him. Naturally, I personally try to avoid such wicked persons like lady Susan.
In my imagination the film adaptation stars Joan Crawford as Lady Susan and Christina Crawford as Frederica. Jane Austen was obviously familiar with the narcissistic personality type.
Yesss! I completely read Lady Susan as a classic female narcissist and poor Federica as the long suffering, neglected child of a narcissist. It's a great character study!
This might sound crazy but Lady Susan Brother & Sister-in-law is my bloodline 1700's Charles Y not going to put my last name out there & Catherine Vernon started my bloodline via UK/Jamaica later in the years.
@@SpinstersLibrary Not a lot but the conclusion is significantly diverted. Anyway, it is worth watching as a bit of fun, however not a movie masterpiece for sure, 😉
