Lafayette officer's medical expenses not covered by the city 

There is absolutely no way that I would police for an agency that can't assure me that if I am hurt while in the line of duty, I will be fully covered. Sorry.

Now what if the entire first responders decided to quit because of this foolishness! Pay her bills!!!

My husband was a Deputy and was hurt on duty. We had to get an attorney to get all his medical needs covered. It’s not right!!!

Our nation should be ashamed by how we treat veterans and other professionals in service positions. So embarrassing!

Sue, that should be covered under workman’s comp. They tried to do the same $hit to my dad in Minnesota back in the late 90s after he had a heart attack on duty and he sued his department. Ended up with a $65,000 settlement, they let him bleed out all his sick time over 1 year and he medically retired and was allowed to pay out of pocket for his health insurance to carry a good plan until he passed away 20 years later.

She needs a workers comp lawyer

This is absolutely absurd. An attorney needs to get ahold of this case and take it and Sue the living daylights out of everyone involved in this. This is ridiculous.

This should absolutely be covered by insurance. The Governor needs to send the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation to the state headquarters of this insurance company and do a deep dive into their denial of payment and services procedures. If they have done this to an officer shot in the line of duty? You can be sure they're doing this to a lot of other people.

No news to me. I was in a similar position back in the 80's, when a karate expert I was arresting screwed my neck and back up for life. But the city never paid a damn thing on it. A suburb of Houston. I later retired from another department, but during that first year after the event the Chief looked after me, kept me on light duty so I had a salary, and stood between me and that crappy bunch of people that ran that little fiefdom who would have fired me just to not have to see me. They disliked me at best, because I was a Vietnam combat veteran and was an aggressive, proactive officer. It wasn't but a few years until I went to a larger organization and we were all happier. I urge all of you to support this officer during her dark time. She deserves no less.

This is a glaring example of how convoluted vaguely worded laws and policies are passed through the legislation without most people even knowing about them. Policies never explained fully that affect our lives greatly. 😢

Physical Rehab is covered by NYC workers compensation! Boom! I would immediately leave this police department after seeing how they treat wounded officers!

don't work in that state. i hurt my shoulder in a training class in michigan and workers comp paid me until i could go back to work. they also paid for all the medical bills.

I would think that, by now, any workers comp lawyer would know if there were any states' workers comp programs that would cover rehab.

Louisiana... More worried about having the 10 Commandments in schools than having insurance for a cop injured in the line of duty. Now I don't like cops at all, but to not cover injuries for an officer injured in the line of duty is pitiful. They only care about power, not the people.

I hope all officers see this and leave the department that clearly doesn’t have their back if injured in the line of duty. If you send your employees into dangerous situations, then the least you could do is take care of them and their families when something catastrophic occurs. It’s clear the city believes law enforcement is expendable.

I bet the city pays for medical care for their inmates though.

Right about now the Lafayette police department should be experiencing a recruitment problem. This is passing the buck at its worst. This is not a new problem for the city of Lafayette - and its obvious that the city feels no shame in victimizing their own on the job injured officers, but at least its getting reported.

I DETEST BAD COPS MORE THAN CRIMINALS, this shows there are some good cops that should be cherished by their depts. Why is there no outcry from the "ALL POWERFUL" unions, why aren't cops demanding better service for themselves??? Insurance companies are bringing more shame upon themselves once again!

A 20 year old with three kids, without verification, receives free insurance (Medicaid), Food stamps, and Welfare BUT a working officer, injured on the job, does not have their serious work injury covered?

I wonder what effect this might have on other officers if they believe that they might have to pay for injuries that they incur.

Wow. Is this huge gap in care common knowledge among the first responders in the state? If I had a loved one working in the state, we would be sending out applications to more humane and responsible states and I would be packing up the house.

I was expecting this to be because someone did something foolish, or she was acting out of policy. But, this is clearly line of duty. She needs to be covered.

Were I a police officer or emergency service worker in Louisiana I'd be looking for employment elsewhere.

What the heck!! Why is this not covered by the city of Lafayette? And why would ANYONE be serving this city if the city does not have their backs? The city should be making sure they cover their folks in blue as is the right thing to do, and not just making sure they have fat compensations for themselves.

I quite that agency so fast. Make a big spectacle of it too. City and PD leaders ought to be ashamed and embarrassed. Imagine being expected to place your life/body on the line only to get hurt and the city/department won't help you.

Dealing with WCB is ridiculous. I was injured in 2020 and part of the injury was to my leg. I was told I was worth 2 % and the audacity of my worker said if you had your leg amputated you'd be worth 35% .Nothing else they would cover. Other injuries I've had to go to a Pain disorder clinic since 2020 for my cervical spine injury. Now I'm waiting for a spinal surgery. 4 years of crippling pain. I feel for this officer who took and oath to serve and protect but can't depend on being protected herself. Bloody shameful.

That's horrible. Insurance companies will do anything to not pay. Happened to me from a car accident. I hired a lawyer which cost 6k. They finally gave in.

If Dr says it's "Necessity", it's covered. (If it's experimental / unproven treatment / something that's Not standard of care=than patent pays out of pocket; ...unless thy finals company to cover it_which is why comp insurance requested that... "basically prove to me it's a standard of care & we'll cover it")

Can you consult IJ - Institute of Justice? They may know of a state that has the law already in place to cover the medical expenses. Smh....

I hope a kind lawyer sees this and helps her out. This seems like one of the tricks to discourage using insurance. They save money by making the system too difficult to actually file a claim.

Local governments already pay for their “qualified immunity” lawsuits when they break the law. Pay her bill out of the police pension. She volunteered for the job.

Louisiana’s workers comp laws are grossly inadequate for all employees not only for law enforcement personnel. I can’t understand why this state is so anti worker.

What in the world?!? She risked her life & they should take care of her medical for as long as it takes. As a retired EMT, the county took care of my bills when I hurt my back on the job. These greedy idiots just don't want to pay the money she deserves. Why would any cop in that dept or state want to risk their lives, knowing this could happen to them as well?

Seems to me all loss caused by active duty injuries should be covered fully until full recovery has been achieved! But when she lost her job due to active duty injury, they canceled her coverage. That shouldn't happen.
