I still remember when this movie was sent to the Oscars in Best Foreign Film category. We got up early morning at 6 am to watch the award function live on TV and we were so disappointed when it did not win :( The actors from the movie were even crying on news channels. This movie was a really big deal and really changed Indian cinema.

The main villain in this movie is the same actor from the tv series "Arrow". He is the detective in that show.

Fun Fact: Aamir Khan met his wife Kiran Rao on the sets of this film. She was an assistant director to Ashutosh Gowarikar.

Glad you watched an Oscar nomination movie from India. It was a rage back in the time. People from small villages used to come in herds to nearby towns to watch. In that time it was one of the few movies you can actually watch with your whole family.

The background people in the crowd during the game were no actors. They just put it open to the village people to come and just act as crowd in the movie. So there were some 30-35 villages who came on the sets leaving their day-to-day work.

Those earrings though Rick, it shows you guys put some subtle hints(from the movie) in your reviews for us to find and appreciate your reviews even more. And what a great analogy: introducing people to Indian movies with the alcohol introduction to a non drinker.

Rick and Corbin, Yay!! One of my favorite Indian films. It was a good turning point for Indian movies. There is a movie about making the Lagaan movie called Chale Chalo: The Lunacy of Film Making (2003). It is awesome and answers most of your questions about this production. It is on RU-vid, but not with English sub-titles. They may be on the DVD.

You know what, there's a whole movie on the making of lagaan by the name 'chale chalo' released directly on TV. It's also available on RU-vid.

I strongly recommend you guys to watch the making of Lagaan. You'll love it.

The dialogues in the movie are not really in Hindi (based on Khariboli dialect) but a mixture of three different dialects of Hindi (Khariboli, Braj Bhasha, Awadhi) and Bhojpuri. The main body (words) is in Awadhi (very poetic and spiritual dialect), the grammar is a mix of Braj (the nuanced romantic Hindi) and Khariboli (the practical standard) and certain inflections are from Bhojpuri (sweet eastern cousin of Hindi) to give it a unique historical sound.

After watching this review i really feel like watching lagaan again...the way you guys spoke about it...just love..❤️❤️❤️

Korbin just to let you know that the only true thing about Lagaan was one character (Kachra) which was inspired by true story of Palwankar Baloo. He was the first lower caste cricketer. As he was the best left arm spinner of his time, team started loving him and casteism was no more in sports.

The beauty of cricket is that nobody tries to hit the body intentionally but bowlers (pitcher) try and target batsman's head by bowling something called as bouncer. And it's not at all illegal, rather it's considered as an asset in a bowler's arsenal. There have been certain rule changes regarding bouncers since the infamous 'Bodyline series' - you guys may want to read about it, as it almost brought Australia and England on brink of war just because of a cricket series. It's bloody iconic. We have had safety equipments (helmet, chest guard, arm guard) been introduced which protects the batsman. Sadly, inspite of all these equipments, we lost a young talent Phil Hughes (australian) in a domestic game back in late 2014, because he was hit behind his head by a bouncer. But the bouncer very much remains the integral part of cricket!

You can't get penalty by hitting player by bowling... there's one case in international cricket when one cricketer died when ball was hit on his head coming at 95 miles+ per hour speed... it's normal...bowler tries bouncers to stop the batsman hitting more runs and to scare him

It's funny that you say you need to build up a tolerance. Years ago I was teaching a unit from a book that was about dance-- international dance and different styles, but the book only had pictures, so I brought in clips of VHS tapes of dance. I included parts of Lagaan and my students (3rd, 4th and 5th graders wanted to watch the movie. I explained that it was not in English as was about cricket and taxes (two things they don't have a clue about), however the student who refused to work and disrupted class advocated to see it. I said we did not have the time and it wasn't part of the curriculum and we weren't getting our work done. He asked if the class was on task working hard could we watch a few minutes at the end of the day. I agreed. He worked hard without disruption and inspired the others to also. We watched it in 10 minute bits. The students loved it. I would play the soundtrack during quiet work times at their request. At the end of the year my students requested to rewatch it. My 3rd and 4th graders became my 4th and 5th graders and for ten years my returning students would request that I show it to my new students. It was magical to them.

You say sports film, I say go watch "Chak De India", that movie will make this look like a kid. Chak De India is the best sports movie to come out of India. Go watch it!!

After the shooting for this film was over, the site where the shooting took place - Bhuj in Gujarat -suffered a massive earthquake of magnitude 7.7 but intensity X (extreme). BTW my favourite song from this movie is the prayer song - O Palanhaare. Great review. I like the fact that now I can predict pretty accurately what parts each of you would like / dislike. Please get to the trailers of Memories in March and The Namesake. Both are mostly in English with a little bit of Bengali here and there.

There is something in these two as a pair of reviewers very similar to gene and ebert! Brilliant boys keep it up!

In all retrospect, try reading the love story between Radha and Krishna.. They happen to be our Hindu God. The love triangle between Bhuvan, Gauri and Elizabeth is essentially an ode to one of the greatest story of love that ceased to complete a circle. The Krishna and Radha love story augments the fact that, love irrespective of the physical existence of your partner in your life, will always remain. Those tiny moments of togetherness will suffice your need to be together for a lifetime. FYI ~ Radha kaise ne Jale song in the movie substantiates that.

Fun Fact: the village is not real! It was built as set especially for the movie! Rhe huts/houses had washrooms and makeup rooms in it. Even the temple was built. You guys should watch the making of the movie i guess its available on RU-vid...i was shown the making in my film making class.
