Grieving today. This video helps, thank you 🙏. My house burned down, lost everything two days before my wedding. Moved off island last Sept. But my parents/fam stayed and are rebuilding. Lahaina will always be home and will rebuild stronger. God comfort those who need comforting as some lost way more than material things and provide so everyone can rebuild and return home if it’s in your will. God bless Lahaina. I miss you and love you! #lahainastrong

Hi there Jesse. I’ve been subscribed for a couple of months or so. I live in Montana. The gal who does my nails lived in Lahaina for awhile some years back. Her sister still lives there. Her sister nearly succumbed to the fire. She spent quite a bit of time in the ocean to escape the flames. My nail tech, Hailey Piilola, has said she is going to follow you. I texted her your June update. She said her sister will never leave Maui. But it has been very difficult in the aftermath. Thank you for your flyovers and narration. Beautiful job‼️

I was just there last month after living there in 1999-2004. The west side is beautiful like I remember. What I noticed first is how healthy Hawaii is and the have and have not’s stood out big time. I feel bad for the local people. If I had Hawaiian blood I’d be pissed off like a MF. Lahaina is demoed, cleaned up and ready to build. Fast! The developers are licking their chops. I worked construction and I learned back then…. Construction in Hawaii don’t play and it was evident again. God Bless Hawaii and it’s people. Bob and Chris it was really nice to see you again. And Pam, it was nice to meet you. You do Bob good!!❤

best drone video record I've seen of the totality of the Lahaina fire of 1 year ago. The task of cleaning up and rebuilding this town is hard to conceive of but one year after the firs, the progress in doing that is impressive.

I lived in East Maui since 1982. It was my dream to live on the West Side at some point, because I loved Lahaina town, the views, weather and beaches on the West Side. Four days before the fire, my dream came true and I closed on my home in Kaanapali, next door to Lahaina town. With a heavy but hopeful heart, I moved in. Your videos are so helpful, showing the amazing progress, acknowledging the tremendous strides being made by the combined efforts of federal, state and county governments, as well as volunteers, charities, churches, builders, attorneys and more. I am with you in positivity for the rebuild.

I'm glad to see the progress as of one year. I appreciate your commentary on the process of rebuilding as well. One of the things that stagger me about rebuilding Maui is that so many people that survived will never be able to live there again? Maybe you have addressed these issues before, but homes need to be built, they won't be cheap, some owners may not have had insurance, and I'm afraid of big hotels and stores buying the lots and destroying the quaintness of Lahaina. Best!

Thank you for this update. We stayed in Lahaina town for 15 days in 2013--our once in a lifetime trip to Hawaii. We loved the town and the people we met every day as walked around the town. We live in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada which is about the same size as Lahaina. We were heartbroken when we learned of the devastating wildfire that consumed Lahaina. Your video shows the resilience and determination of the people of Lahaina in their efforts to rebuild their homes and lives. I hope and pray that as the rebuild proceeds, the character and charm that made Lahaina such a wonderful place to visit will also be restored..

Oh, my goodness. As pretty much all Alaskans, I considered myself a part-time Hawaiian, traveling there once or twice a year. We’d spend a couple days in Waikiki shopping, then fly over to Maui to stay in Wailea. We’d drive to Lahaina or Kaanapali for lunch or dinner, enjoying Maui’s old buildings and vibe. Because we were tourists, we didn’t venture into residential neighborhoods, walking only around the Front street commercial district. We watched in sadness that day, when everything we knew there burned, and listed to stories of the residents. It really wasn’t until I watched your drone video during the first slow phases of cleanup that I saw the totality of the devastation, and how long it would take to just clear debris, much less “recover.”. Your footage is a reminder of how completely people’s lives were destroyed, and that the Maui we loved may not heal for decades. Continued best wishes to everyone affected by the fire, their families and their pets. 🌴🌱🎋🌸🌺❤️‍🩹

Mahalo Jesse. Lahaina has been on my mind for the last week more than usual. I lived there for 18 years. It’s so emotional to see all the neighborhoods that are just completely gone (including mine) up Lahainluna and by the Cannery Mall. I am hopeful and impressed with the progress though. It’s difficult to get things done quickly in Hawaii, so at least it’s been mostly cleaned up. Although it will never be the same, it will be home to many locals again within the next few years…at least I hope so.

It all looks so dry. At least when the islands grew sugar cane there was watering and land management to the mountain bases. So much needs to change to protect the area in the future. Your updates are heartwarming, Thank you.

You're 100% correct. It was all irrigated sugar cane and pineapple, but Hawaii labor costs could not compete with Latin America. The land went fallow, and invasive grass/shrub built up. Hopefully a dry forest can be restored which could be less flammable, or we grow food. Water is a commodity on an island however.

I was in Lahaina 3 weeks before the fire. We weren’t there for as long as I’d like, but my family and I got shave ice and people-watched on Front St. for a while. I took a few pictures throughout the evening, of the surrounding neighborhoods, King Kamehameha III School, the tree, the Lappert’s Ice Cream shop, of the art museum/studio that said “Now Hiring” across the street. It was really lovely. My heart hurt to see and hear about the devastation of Lahaina and its people. I wish I had taken more photos. Thank you for keep us updated.

Hi Jesse - I've been following your videos as my work team includes Hawaii team members on all the islands. We've been walking this journey with them from the mainland over the past year, with various trips and donations in support. Our team covers Northern California so wildfires are familiar, but this devastation is so big. Your videos are really well done and are helpful to see how far the community has come, and how much work there is still to do. Heartbreaking and hopeful at the same time. Thank you so much for giving us this birds eye view into the situation. I'll keep following to see the progress. Lahaina town is in our prayers - Mahalo!

Thanks for producing this aerial video. My wife and I vacationed every year at the former KBH in Kaanapali from 2006 to 2013 but spent most of our time roaming the streets and shops in Lahaina. Broke our hearts to see that entire area obliterated by the fire storm. The lost souls should remain forefront in everyone’s memory but its also hard to fathom so much lost history. We were ready to rebook a return trip when every television channel broadcast the fire as it was happening. We live in Calgary Alberta Canada but our hearts belong to Maui and to the many friends we made who primarily live clise to the airport. We will return in 2025 but aren’t sure if Kaanapali will be the place as the former KBH is now owned by Outrigger who we really aren’t fond of. Sad that our old haunt (KBH) will never be what it once was … traditional & quaint. 🥲

Great video work and terrific narration! Thanks!!! I'm on the mainland and wishing all those in Lahaina great success with your rebuild. I imagine the local government is totally overwhelmed with permit applications and is faced with the pressure to get them approved asap while also making sure construction is done right and the town doesn't end up looking "cheap" and like things were done too quicklyand without enough thought given to the process. I was hoping to see more construction equipment at work but the longer and more care taken with the rebuild, the better the community will look when finished. I hope plans are being made to have sufficient building supplies and equipment on hand once construction really starts rolling. I started the build of my California house about a year into the pandemic. Supplies (especially lumber) were hard to get and priced accordingly (high, due to the shortage). Paint, plumbing and Electrical items were the most difficult to find. We ended up ordering circuit breakers off a variety of eBay sites. Good luck to you all!!!

Your drone coverage was thorough and your knowledge/reporting was amazing! Right after the fire, none of the drone vids showed my aunt's neighborhood. Yours has MULTIPLE flyovers! I took screenshots to send to her son (my cousin). I want to come back to Maui, but I'm torn. The locals had/have polar opposite opinions, so I've spent time only on Kauai. Sadly I fear the town will have lost its charm as so many of the historic buildings have been lost. I hope they rebuild the waterfront core in the older style that it was.

Still so sad. We've stayed in the townhouse right at the 1:13 mark to the right of center of frame (has furniture on the deck on the 2nd floor balcony). We brought our boy out there for a trip when he was turning 1 year old, he sees photos from our visit and asks about it over and over. We love Lahaina so much and were so saddened by everything, but we are looking forward to it returning to some kind of normalcy for everyone who lives there.

Thanks for the extensive view in both directions. I could finally see the remains of the Methodist church where I attended services when visiting the area. I knew it had burned but hadn't seen what remains (the stairs and outline of the sanctuary). I remember what Lahaina looked like, and it's heartbreaking to see what is there currently.

We love Lahaina and were heartbroken by the devastating fire. Its good to see the progress and thank you for the sharing this video. I was looking hard to see the Lahaina Buddhist Temple survived but couldnt make out. I sincerely hope it did. I am glad to see the Banyan tree survived despite all the destruction.

Such a beautiful spot on this planet. I have stayed many times on Maui and it is my favorite destination to date. I was grieved watching the fires burn and witnessing the loss of so many places I have visited. The entire rebuild is such a massive task. So many people living a quiet life simply do not have the money to rebuild with what insurance companies offer as compensation. How do you calculate depreciation on a structure that has a real value of 50 times what it originally cost to build. So many families having to fight to regain their heritage and existence.

We were in a similar situation. We visited a couple of months before the fire and miss going to the island. IMHO, it has the best snorkeling of all of the islands and we just plain love the island. It's a hard balance to walk. Not going there so people can rebuild, both physically and mentally vs. the necessity for tourist dollars for many people to survive. That, coming on the tails of the Covid shutdown.

@@barryf5479 yes, I'm hoping to spend a lot more money on Maui💚 As soon as Hawaii opened after covid I had to get there to get away by myself, so I filled out a ton of paperwork and kept my shots current. That was one of my best trips ever! They gave me one of the best rooms with a lanai and it was steps from the pool overlooking the ocean! From Oregon to Maui, it's not far. I took my daughter and granddaughter to the Big Island this last April🌺 so amazing...

I live about as far away from Maui as you can and still be in the US. I knew a lot about the fire, but had no idea the true size and scope of the devastation. Good luck in the rebuild. Can't imagine getting a builder, materials, permits and such. I'm sure many homes were built before building permits, that must now comply.

Thank you for this video. Another realtor is making it look like the town has been completely abandoned by the government. i was so outraged by that and then I watched this video to see all the progress. It’s obviously not enough or fast enough, but it's something better than he implies.

Jesse, Thanks for your video. I like your use of Drones. I'm Really blown away by All the damage to Lahaina. What a Great Town that I visited in 2005. We are Not a stranger to Major Damage from Wildfire living in California. I Live in Marin County, but I often visit Santa Rosa (Coffey Park) (Look it up, if you live in Wildfire Areas). Coffey Park "Is a cautionary tale for those in the West", but it's basically in the middle of a Major City. Mostly built back, but took some years. Lahaina will be Re-Built, but Not the Same. I Like the Spirit of Hawaii, and Yes "Hang-Loose". I Love Hawaiians, You are Always Positive.

Aloha Jesse, As a previous Honolulu and Lahaina resident, as well as the Founder of Hobie Sports and one of the original part owners of Kimo's, I appreciate your professional and empathetic work in producing these drone footage presentations of Lahaina's fire aftermath and the progress managed since that dreadful day. Your documentation will serve as essential information as Lahaina continues to heal and rebuild. I hope that the restaurants and businesses along Front Street are allowed to be part of this process. It is important to recover ALL semblances of that which once was...and not for the planning commission to pick and choose that which is to be rebuilt. Those businesses are an important part of Lahaina's history and deserve to be part of the total picture of the new Lahaina reborn!
