Synopsis:
An unexpected phone call shakes Dia (Madhuri Dixit) out of her dance rehearsal in New York.
Her teacher, her guru, is dying and she must return to India. The town where she grew up, the town where she learnt to live and to dance. Also the town she left on an impulse, severing ties with her parents and her people.
It is a poignant and troubled return; not only has her guru passed away but the institution that he so lovingly nurtured is in decay and under threat of demolition. Ajanta theatre, the once vibrant hub of the community, the place where Dia's fondest memories are embedded must now be brought down because the local political authorities feel it a waste of prime real estate.
Dia picks up the gauntlet to turn this ruin into a vibrant and bustling theatre that was once the soul of her little town, while fighting discrimination, resentfulness and her own demons.

I don't know why this movie is so underrated.. For my opinion it's just a masterpiece.. Performing a full story of laila majnu in just 19minutes is not a piece of a cake.. And the acting skill, i have nothing to say about the acting skill of every single actors.. Everyone is best in their place..

The audience needs to be reminded of our true culture and art. Precisely why such movies should be made. Something good was again achieved with the song ghar more pardesiya. That classical perfoirmance depicting the story of Ramayana with cirque du soleil like performance completely Indianised and done better along with the classical dance. These pieces should always be made. With exposure eventually people will grow brain cells.

It's mind-blowing how people nowadays don't care about quality and talent. Aaja Nachle was and is ART and those songs like O Re Piya, chef kiss. One of my favorite movies since childhood. Thanks Madhuri, a true performer.

Aaja Nachle was definitely an underrated movie. Moreover, this stage play, which was actually the heart of the movie, never got the audience it actually deserved. This stage performance is actually a gem of it's own kind. Divya Dutta, Madhuri Dixit, Konkana Seen Sharma, Kunal Kapoor, Eanvir Shorey, Jugal Hansraj, Vinay Pathak, Raghubir Yadav, Yashpal Sharma, and many others, all in one song. What more an actual Bollywood lover want. You will get all sorts of feelings while listening to this, viz: fear, goosebumps, love, innocence, everything. I still listen to this song (it's 2018 now) and everytime I still feel as if I am listening to it for the first time. And yeah, I don't understand who are those people who disliked this video. May God bless them. Proud and happy to be born in the 90's era where this kind of music was present and popular.

This movie actually highlighted the actual musical genre of Indian cinema which the audience failed to capture it's essence that time. This 19 minutes of Marvelous performance alone itself deserves to receive an award for the way this timeless story of Laila-Majnu had been portrayed so wonderfully here. Every single actor in this performance, in this movie deserves high regard for their role in this movie. It was pure genius, so theatrical. Every actor deserved an Emmy, this movie deserved an Oscar for it's cinematical approach to one of the most named love story to ever exist in history. Madhuri did a fantastic job at representing the voice of the reader, from the beginning she felt otherworldly but a inherent part of the story. To be able to show a Epic in just 19 minutes is crazy in itself and to do such a good job at it? INSANE. Such a pity the audience didn't appreciate this masterpiece, would have to loved to see it reach heights.

I sooo understand! I'm European and in 2009, I discovered Madhuri ji and this film. It was so captivating that I actually found a kathak teacher and have been studying kathak ever since. Madhuri ji in the Aaja Nachle dance is just BRILLIANT, an eternal inspiration and motivation.

This is simply one of the most Beautiful Love Stories I've seen, acted out in Song & dance. All the Dancers & Actors & Actresses, so talented. Especially moved by the youth playing the younger couple. Please! If at all possible, could we see a re-make of this story in the future? With English Sub-Titles. Maduri can u convince producers. This is one of the best movies of Indian Cinema. It never got the due it deserved. A perfect comeback for Madhuri..and this "Laila Majnu" bit is one of the bestest things I have ever seen. This last bit is much better than many of today's full length films. Konkona , Kunal and all others were so fantastic. Also the singers did a marvellous job

This stage play is one of the best creations in Bollywood ever. The team and their excellent team-work (both on-screen and off-screen) are amazing. This is the best masterpiece in play format, Bollywood had ever. The concept, the lyrics, the artists, the presentation everything is more than perfect. This segment of 19 minutes is 1000 times better than many full movies of Bollywood. Madhuri Dixit on Dance/ Nawazuddin, Vinay Pathak, Raghuveer Yadav, Ranveer Shorey, Divya Dutta, Yashpal Sharma on act, Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal on playback voice, Salim-Sulaiman on Music what a combination, what a performance. My dear friend introduced me to this amazing and beautiful movie 12 years ago when I was 17 in high school. And I still watch this movie religiously and listen to the songs. Im Mexican and I always blast the songs in my house while cleaning and my car dude…I sing along to them even though I’m not sure I’m even saying the words right , sounds okay to me haha. Wait that was almost 20 mins and I watched the whole thing without blinking. Was it always that intense? Omg this film is definitely nonsensically underrated but this part damn. And how fine is Jugal Hansraj? I wish he did more movies than just voice a goldfish in What are the odds. His fans know what I’m talking about. Also who will ever be able to do justice to these roles like Madhuri Dixit? Every single micro expression... the flick of the wrist... that grace that beauty... this film will be timeless. I’m watching in 2020. The casting is so amazing in this movie and every single actor (someone listed everyone in the comment section 👏 well done) This film is such a treat. "Laila and Majnu" is a magnificent novel by Sheikh Nizami Ganjavi, the prophet of Azerbaijani literature. In the subject of the song, he portrays a person who turns Majnu (crazy) on the way to Laila. But it ends very sadly, the souls of two young people meet in heaven.😞😞

Story: he hits the boys hand and the same scar show up the girls hand. Parents think it’s some sort of voodoo so they separate the kids. Then they grow up and met again and fall in love. The girls brothers tries to stop their love and the guy kills the brother. So he gets punished and is set to be killed but the girl Laila saves him by agreeing to marry some guy her parents want her to. The guy is banished. On the wedding night the girl tell the guy she is marrying that he can have her body but her heart belongs to the other guy - Manju. In a rage her husband goes and finds Manju and kills him - only to have the girl die at the same time from the same wounds. Narrative: they weren’t cursed, they were meant for each other and the weird things were just signs that they were soulmates. But the two lovers are reunited in heaven.

I didn't know that majnun layla (layla majnu as you call it in hindi) is very famous in india , this story happened in real , in Saudi Arabia (in najid نجد ) in the 7th century , at the home of bani amer بني عامر ، majnun real name is qais bin almoullouh قيس بن الملوح , and layla alamiria ليلي العامرية ، qais was a famous Arabian poets , he wrote many poems for layla , Arab called him majnun مجنون ( Arabic for crazy ) , because of how much he was crazily in love with her , the real reason why they couldn't marry is because back then it was shameful to let your daughter marry someone wrote many poems about your daughter openly before marriage, not because of a religious reason, so layla's father refused majnun and married layla to another man . This Indian version added many things that didn't happen in the real story . We Arabs still study ( qais ) majnun's poems till nowdays . I will quote some lines that i remember from one of his poems : أَلَسْتَ وَعَدْتَنِي يَا قَلْب أَنّي إِذَا مَا تُبْتُ عَنْ لَيْلَى تَتُوبُ فَهَا أَنَا تَائِبُ عَنْ حُبِ لَيْلَى فَمَا لَكَ كُلمَا ذُكِرَتْ تَذُوبُ The story was already famous in Arabian countries, but it became more famous after nizami wrote a novel/poem about it in 12th century , especially in countries that studied Persian literature .

@@beelover2827 i will try my best to translate it to you , my English isn't that good 😅 the meaning in English : O'heart didn't you promise me That if i repented from Layla you will repent ( he means his heart ) . Here I am repenting from the love of layla . So why are you ( his heart ) melting ( i don't how to translate تَذُوب probably 😅 ) whenever her name is mentioned . I think the translation would be better if someone who have better knowledge in English and absolutely in Arabic also , since this a peotry and i am no expert in translation peoms , sorry 😅

Just due to some controversies this movie did so bad at the box-office but it really deserved much more appreciation! This is such a beautiful piece of art. These days the movies are all about cheap item-songs with trash storyline while this movie was a gem!

The dances & choreography, the music & lyrics, the acting & the development of characters ... It is an amazing piece of art that brings joy, happiness & hope.
