Lake Biwa, A Large Freshwater Lake, Situated In The Central Part Of Honshu, Japan's Largest Island. Covering Approximately 670 Square Kilometers In Total Surface Area, Lake Biwa Is The Largest Freshwater Lake In Japan.
Situated In The Center Of Shiga Prefecture, Northeast Of Kyoto And Osaka, Lake Biwa Is Believed To Be One Of The World's Oldest Lakes, Formed As A Result Of Tectonic Activity Roughly Four Million Years Ago.
Lake Biwa Has A Roughly Elliptical Shape, With A Length Of About 63 Kilometers (39 Miles) From North To South And A Width Of Around 20 Kilometers (12 Miles) From East To West.
Depth: The Lake Reaches A Maximum Depth Of Approximately 104 Meters (341 Feet) Near The Center, With An Average Depth Of Around 41 Meters (135 Feet). The Lake Can Be Divided Into Two Basins, A Large Deeper Northern Basin And A Shallower Southern Basin. The North Basin Has An Mean Depth Of 44 Meters And The Southern Basin Has A Mean Depth Of 3.5 Meters . The Lake Has Total Shoreline Lenght Of Roughly 235 Kilometers.
Lake Biwa Is The Water Source For About 14.5 Million People In The Kansai Region, Including The Neighbouring Cities Of Kyoto And Osaka - About 10% Of Japan’s Population.
The Shores Of Lake Biwa Are Home To Several Cities And Towns, Including Otsu, The Capital Of Shiga Prefecture. Higashiōmi, Hikone, Kusatsu, Maibara, Moriyama, Nagahama, Ōmihachiman, Ōtsu, Takashima, Yasu
Lake Biwa Is Home To Several Islands, Okishima Island Is The Largest Of Them. Other Major Island Include Chikubu Island, Takeshima Island, Torishima Island And Bentenjima Island
The Name “biwa” Actually Translates To “lute” In Japanese. The Lake Got Its Name Because It Is Thought To Resemble The Shape Of A Traditional Japanese Musical Instrument Called Biwa.
