My club, South Shore Bassmasters, fished its annual two-day tournament up at Lake Champlain this year. We fished the northern section of the lake, launching out of West Swanton, VT.
On day two I went about 12 miles south. I briefly ventured that way the day before, but I didn't go far. This time I intended to fish the Gut, which I heard was a good bet for folks who didn't know the lake well. Because my boat only goes about 33mph, I kept getting bored and stopping along the way, fishing stuff that looked good.
Nothing really paid off and eventually I found myself a bit north of the Gut and kind of trapped on the wrong side of the lake, so I just said screw it and fished that area (Pelots Bay and Carry Bay). Again, I caught a ton of fish, but most were small. I did catch a decent largemouth that went nearly 4 pounds, but the rest were much smaller.
Around 1:45 PM, I made the run back to the ramp. It took 30 minutes. I fished a train trestle nearby, flipping all the wood and rocks to no avail. Then, with about 25 minutes left in the tournament, I pulled out the spinnerbait-and it was on! They were KILLING the spinnerbait!
In the last minutes of day two, I upgraded four of my largemouth with smallies, then upgraded two of the smallies with largemouth.
And then, with the bass still biting, I was out of time. =(
I ended day two with a much more respectable 14.48lb, for a two-day total of 23.69-which is pathetic in comparison to the winning weight of 38.28, a club record.
At least I have some spots for next time.
Thanks for watching!
