In early June 2023, Neil returns to Buttermere, on a stunningly bright, dry, day, to do the Buttermere Fells (also known as the Buttermere Edge - Red Pike, High Stile and High Crag), descending via Seat and the Scarth Gap Pass.
Check out the route here: explore.osmaps.com/route/2090...
On the way, there's a rival film crew, (which, for a change, does not appear to have been another return by Tom Cruise to film more for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning) a paraglider, Bleaberry Tarn, a wheatear, and views for days.
As ever, you can donate to Cockermouth Mountain Rescue via their website: www.cockermouthmrt.org.uk/ or cafdonate.cafonline.org/17630...
Subscribe for more films of our walks and visit our website: www.onyvafilms.com to read more and to suggest other walks that you would like to see.
More films coming soon!

Amazing video, as always. I haven't ventured onto the Buttermere fells yet, but they do look stunning. I'm working through the AW guidebooks in order, and am nearly finished the central fells. Keep up the good work.

Thanks, Steve. Spent a week in Buttermere a few years ago, and did all of the surrounding Wainwrights - such a great place to visit and explore!

What a great YT, properly broken in boots, commentary is knowledagable and clear, the video is great, an excellent job, channel subscribed. As an aside I first did this route in 1973 and have continued to revisit it over the years. The most memorable was in 1993 as I was walking between High Stile and High Crag and saw the weather coming over from Pillar, I reckoned I could beat it so kept going, as the thunder approached the next thing I knew was ears ringing, seeing stars lying flat on my face, I was very close to a lightning strike on the ridge (It can't have hit me as I'm here to recount the tale), I crawled my way onto my feet and made the most rapid descent of Gamlin end I reckon there's ever been. Once I got back to the car and took my boots and socks off my feet were black with bruising from the ankle to my toes - and they stayed that way for 3 weeks.

Thanks, Ashley. Before this trip, it was probably about 10 years since I did the Buttermere Fells, but I shouldn’t leave it so long next time! Hope you get a good day for your return visit! All the best.

Top section of Red Pike is horrendous walking, comparable , almost, with Little Hell Gate on Gable. Though I did walk, slide and slither UP Red Gill on Grasmoor. You’re absolutely right though, going up is preferable to going down although the thrill seeking scree runners might disagree Worth mentioning that Buttermere Red Pike is the only summit from which it is possible to see five of the lakes at once as well as the Isle of Man on a clear day. I wouldn’t be dogmatic but I’m almost sure that it is JUST possible to see the tip of Northern Ireland as well. A really lovely circular walk with a stop at the unbeatable Croft Farm Coffee shop if you finish on time. Anyone confirm that Croft Farm Coffee shop was operational in 1974? I’m certain I had coffee there then, but even the staff don’t know. For any who’ve not ventured to Buttermere by road the choices are a hair raising drive from Seatoller, over the ALL the way down Honister Pass or from Newlands Valley which is steep, narrow and winding especially down from Buttermere Hause. The other approach from the east is the more sedate Braithwaite, Whinlatter, Lorton, narrow road. Don’t know the other roads from the west that lead to Lorton. Another alternative if you are in Keswick is the bus. One route is clockwise via Honister, the other is anti clockwise via Whinlatter. Your timing must be right because the last bus is early evening and is sometimes overcrowded and unable to pick up everyone that’s waiting so it’s an expensive taxi ride back!! Thanks for another video filled with many pleasant memories

@LakeDistrictFilms Год назад
Thanks, Andy! We have a couple of drives into Buttermere on our channel, too - from Newlands and from Borrowdale - if that’s of interest. All the best.

I love this ridge walk in one of my favourite places in the Lakes too. The last time I was up there a lady had got as far as Bleaberry Tarn, looked up at Red Pike and decided she couldn't go any further before heading back down again. I felt ever so sorry for her. I remember the disappointed look on her husbands face. It's an unrelenting pull up mind and that last bit where you said two steps forward and one step back is spot on. Did you not fancy walking across to Dodd? I think the view from there is better than Red Pike but that's just my opinion. The views you captured were really amazing. Terrific scenery and brilliant narration. Well done sir! I haven't come down the steep route you mentioned. Coming down the way you did is steep enough for me! Cheers for a cracking video.
@LakeDistrictFilms
@LakeDistrictFilms Год назад
Thanks, David! Should have given Dodd a visit, but filming can add quite a bit of time to a walk - will have to revisit next time! Thanks so much for the feedback. All the best.

Another great film, please don't tell me that they were filing even more Mission impossible footage!. The best part of all your films is at the end when you doubt that anyone is still watching :) of course we are.
@LakeDistrictFilms
@LakeDistrictFilms Год назад
Thank you! Mission: Impossible was my first thought, too. That or Andor, but in the end I think it was a period drama, but still TBC!

This is incredible. How long was the hike? And how much time did it take you?
@LakeDistrictFilms
@LakeDistrictFilms 9 месяцев назад
It's about an 8 - 8.5 mile walk - 3,200 ft/975m ascent/descent - and probably took about 8 - 9 hours, but we spend longer filming than we would if just walking!

Are you sure about dodd not being a wainwright? I'm certain it is
@LakeDistrictFilms
@LakeDistrictFilms Год назад
Think there are 10 Wainwright “Dodds” (if you include things like Great Dodd, Starling Dodd, etc), but pretty sure that there’s only one simple “Dodd” that’s a Wainwright, which is the one beneath Skiddaw. Happy to be corrected if wrong!
@jonathanmorris9303

@@LakeDistrictFilms ah I'm with you now. Thanks for clearing that up I was planning on doing this route and was intending on climbing dodd
@LakeDistrictFilms
@LakeDistrictFilms Год назад
No worries! Starling Dodd, which is the neighbouring peak to the west of Red Pike is a Wainwright, if that helps…
