Lake District Walks: The Loneliest Lake

Thank you. I know what you mean about needing a little escapism while working. I hope you thoroughly enjoy your forthcoming experiences on the fells. At this time of year, Rannerdale is always a good bet, and at any time of year Loughrigg is a low fell with so much to enjoy on a fine day. I would avoid Gowbarrow at the moment, but only because the waterfalls are a bit low and some of the paths closed due to maintenance. Also, Holm Fell is fine at any time, but do make sure that you use some kind of insect repellant, as when the weather warms up the little blighters are always in search of a good meal. Wherever you choose, stay safe.

Thank you. Whenever I go to Devoke Water there are very few people there. I don't think it is widely known, but those views are simply wonderful. A good option for a full day is to walk up from Dalegarth via Stanley Falls. You can return via Eskdale Green and maybe enjoy a short journey on the steam railway as well.

I would agree with that, except that both sides in the dispute had alternatives. The owners of the lake lived beside the River Esk, which was renowned for the quantity and quality of its fish, whilst the residents of Ulpha had the River Duddon. Both rivers would be superior to the Lake in terms of abundance of fish, and ease of catching them. What they don't have is the Brown Trout of Devoke Water, which apparently were a much prized delicacy.

@@jonathancraigguides a bit of a treat in hard times.

I remember the first time I took that walk, and went up on to Water Crag, which is not the highest point in that area, I expected a reasonable view, but I was pleasantly surprised at just how good, and extensive, it was. Being there on a fine clear day helps, of course.

Thank you. Actually, depending upon your housing and work and needs, living in the Lake District, or close to, may not be as expensive as you think. The West Cumbria area is far more affordable than the Central Lakes, plus there is a lovely coastline to explore.

Thank you. I've always been interested in the human interaction with the landscape, especially from an age where simply walking for pleasure was virtually unheard of.

A minute to appreciate the view and the landscape. Its something I now do with my children, in recent years I've started wild camping as well which is a great pass time to really immerse yourself into the countryside 👍

@@johnseagraves8700 I fully agree. I always think that we miss so much in rushing around in our everyday lives, whereas, as you say, stopping awhile lets you see things from a different perspective.

A lot depends upon how high you are prepared to go. The Ambleside area has some wonderful lower level walks, most fairly easy as long as you are relatively able bodied. So, day 1 would be a nice circuit of Loughrigg Fell, close to Ambleside, Day 2 would be a short drive to Tarn Hows, followed by a wander around the tarn and a walk up Black Crag, Day 3 would involve a drive (or bus ride) to Hawkshead for a mooch around the village followed by the walk to Latterbarrow. If you are staying longer, then Day 4 would be the stroll from Ambleside to Rydal Water and on to Grasmere, and Day 5 would take you down Windermere (the Lake) to Bowness by boat or bus, from where you could take a stroll to the ferry, cross the water, and walk to Sawrey, once the home of Beatrix Potter. Whatever you do, I hope you have a lovely time.

Thank you Alan. I've had a few days like that, including one where I managed to get two punctures within 20 minutes of each other. The first was hard enough to repair as I was parked in a muddy puddle. The second was as I went over a cattle grid, and had no spare tyre to repair it. With regard to the Wainwright walk, pick a fine day. The views from all the tops are wonderful.

Thank you. Sorry to hear that you visit was rained off. I actually think you will be in good company with that experience, as when the wet weather blows in from the Irish Sea Birker Moor is the first high ground it meets. Even after a spell of dry weather the ground around the lake is quite boggy. I hope when you do visit the conditions are better.

Thank you Alan. I think in those days money was of little object to the owners of the manor. What I found interesting was that there seemed to be no attempt by either side to negotiate and compromise. They could both have benefitted greatly. I reckon that it was not so much a boat house, more a guard post. It seems a lot of trouble to go to simpl;y to catch a few trout.

Thank you Dave. The camera seems OK, although it has taken some stick over the years. Not too sure about the lens, it was fully immersed in the mud. I wouldn't have liked to carry on using it.

Thank you Graham. Yes, all is well. Camera is charging as I write, new video will be appearing soon, but, to be fair, it is a little different to my usual. It is a 14 mile walk, and there is only one short hill. Lots of scenery though, as well as more than a smidgeon of history.

Thank you Ashley. I think it gets designated as a tarn due to altitude, remoteness and depth. However, the name has, over the years, been Devoke (or variations of) Water, Lake and even Flood, but not Tarn. In fact, I nearly called the video 'The Tarn that's not a Tarn'. If you go there, really good waterproofs, or, heaven forbid, even a good pair of wellies, is the order of the day.

@@jonathancraigguides It reminded me of some of the lakes in the Mournes, lots of heather, no path, very boggy. Yet, the peace and solitude is priceless. I'm sure you've more stories and history to unearth and reveal so looking forward to the next one. We did Helm Crag again this trip and still remember your video of it. Regards, Ashley

Good question Graham. First of all, everything is OK, in fact, I've been having a lot of enjoyable days looking after my family. As for the future, I have plans for many more adventures, some of which will be inside the Lakes, and some further afield.

Unfortunately, not yet. A number of issues have held up progress.

Sorry for not answering sooner. I've actually been away attending a family funeral. The word 'Craig' derives from the old scottish gaelic word for rock. It's use in the Lake District is quite common, tending to relate to a rocky outcrop, or 'crag' in modern English.

Oh how I would love to say yes! But no, family life and commitments have made life more than a little fraught over the last few months. The only benefit has been that instead of being at the word processor or on the fells, I have spent a good few hours with my gorgeous grandchildren. Consequently, there is rarely a dull moment!
