In a follow up to our viewer favorite BEFORE & AFTER, we will head into Lake Mead to match up several vantage points from older photos that will illustrate it's water loss. In this episode we will also explore the history and demise of Boulder Harbor, the original Lake Mead Marina that was built in 1940. Then we head down a wash to check out one of our old haunts. We finish at the infamous "Skyward Boat" that was still underwater just a few short months ago! Included in the video is a quick overview of the water level report from the Bureau of Reclamation as of September 29th, 2022.
Thank you to all the viewers who voted in our community poll! This video received over half the votes (~56%) and we are happy to continue making content that both us the creators AND you the viewers are passionate about!

Hey there Dawn welcome back! The kayak spot is indeed one of the saddest... that's the dogs favorite area also because they like just floating around in circles watching the water fowl 😂 I hope that sometime soon in the future we can do an update back in the kayak there again! It's one thing to just see the reports and numbers and another to actually see the terrain change because of it. Funny thing is I used to actually AVOID going to Boulder Harbor because it was always so busy. Then I started only going there because it was drying up and not used anymore. Now it's just gone, but I think it will fill again because the last flood there was a small puddle in there! 🙂 Thanks for watching buddy!

Very good editing regarding the before and after shots. Here in Australia in 2022 we've just had our worst floods in 50 years. Some parts have had their worst floods in 100 years. Our last drought in Victoria (lower right-hand side of Australia) was in 2007. So we built a desal plant and we haven't been short on water 'from the sky' ever since, lol.
@mojo.adventures
@mojo.adventures Год назад
Thank you for watching and the feedback! Now how could you in Australia build a desal plant when California (the 5th largest economy so they claim) always talks about how they can't afford to build them? I wonder where all their money went? Seriously though if California would have started tackling this issue 10 or 20 years ago we wouldn't even be in this spot. It's interesting you mention the bad flooding there now in Australia also. I have heard from several viewers outside the US who are experiencing the same. Even here in the US, it is frustrating to hear about other folks dealing with ravaging flood waters while we deal with a persistent drought. We have private entrepreneurs flying to space for leisure but we can't even move some water around or figure out how to pull it out of the ocean. Shameful...

Thank you for watching and commenting! It does look like Mead is on a slight upward or at least holding trend due to the outflow finally being restricted. Humans are the cancer of this planet and mother nature will get the last laugh with massive droughts, fires, plagues, savage storms and famine. Not to mention war and pollution. Hundreds of millions have been slaughtered and starved and taken over by massive death squad armies. Now its our turn to suffer now that we have been taken over from within as we are now being used as the world's number one immigration dumping ground. Drought is the least of our worries.

Still looking at the bay harbor of 2016, you can still see all the white shoreline back to 1940, when water levels were so much higher and the area all submerged. So events from the 1940s-2000, not just a drought (population increase, increased water usage and waste) have truly taken their tolls on this resource.
@mojo.adventures
@mojo.adventures Год назад
Very true! The lake has been suffering from attacks on all sides from man and nature. One of the worst enemies of our water supply is corrupt politicians who dole out privatized rights to this same water to their donors and lackeys. I'm glad people are finally waking up to these issues I hope it's not too late!

This video is 1 of the best I've seen, showing before and after photo's. From other photo's I've seen Lake Mead isn't close to Hoover Dam either is Overton Arm. Hoover Dam is in Black Canyon, the dam holding back water created Lake Mead. Before the dam was built there was NO Lake Mead. If you can see the Colorado River it's the border between NV & AZ, the Colorado River isn't in Lake Mead. The 2 states border is the Colorado River.
@mojo.adventures
@mojo.adventures Год назад
Thank you for your support, we appreciate the kind words that keep us motivated! 👍 You are correct, the size of "Lake Mead Natl Rec Area" proper is HUGE. Most people don't realize it stretches from way up near Moapa and the Utah border, all the way down towards Kingman in Arizona. The lake itself happens to just be in the middle. The arms of the lake are large enough that they warrant their own exploring aside from the marina area that most visitors think of. Black Canyon is a very deep "V" channel and from hiking the area like "Boy Scout Canyon" in our other video, you can absolutely see the sheer steepness of the canyon. Though I would not desire the lake to ever empty, it would be quite a sight to see this canyon as it was.

Great video! I was also out there almost every weekend from late 90's till recent. Crawdad Cove, Mile Marker 8 and Stewarts Point were my normal locations to spend the weekend. Preferably Stewart's Point since it got me away from the weekend partiers at the lake. Lol.. It's very sad to see it disappearing from weekend to weekend. I can't help but to be upset when I see the continuous decline and yet as I drive around the outer perimeter, (particularly North of the 215 North) you see new developments, apartments being built, high end condos, and Gated community homes. I'm not the smartest guy in the world but it seems like common sense that when you have less and less of something you need to live and the bigger the population you have the quicker this very important source disappears then to keep increasing the population without fixing the problem of the depleting very important source seems a lot like suicide. Why don't the politicians put a hold on contracts and permits to build until the Lake recovers? Greed, money and power? It's just upsetting that there seems to be more than one solution to help the recovery but very little is being done that makes a difference. If 3 friends go camping for 2 days then a case of water will be fine. If 300 friends go camping for 2 days let's see how far 1 case of water goes. Common sense says more water is needed or less people. The valley can't keep growing with the decline of water continually happening. If so then unfortunately there's nothing but bad news in the forecast. Great video guys!
@mojo.adventures

We haven't been to Stewart's but we've been all around the rest of those areas. Love going out early morning down the washes to get away from everyone also, but as the weekend nears we avoid it also especially the rowdy party crowds who seem to trash the hangouts. Definitely frustrating seeing all the construction still happening (and increasing!) while they blame long time residents like you. The city commission knows this but doesn't want to hear it. It's their cash cow. They will not stop it. The more new people that come, the more they will restrict and penalize those that were already here and have followed the rules. Leadership stinks of corruption here, but what else is new in the world? We're going to have to wait and see what band-aid they think up next. Thanks for checking out the vid!

A side issue that makes me mad is that the lake authorities are not taking this opportunity to get the old boats and other trash off the lake bed. The same thing happened here a few years ago - Lake Houston went way down exposing all kinds of trash, old cars, etc on the lake bed and the city of Houston turned a blind eye to that. Only after a lot of citizens went out and started hauling out the old cars, car batteries, wrecked boats, etc were the authorities embarrassed into a real cleanup campaign.
@mojo.adventures
@mojo.adventures Год назад
That part is very frustrating... right around when I made the boat wreck hunt video, I was contacting folks at NPS and chatting with Rangers at the gate trying to figure out if a couple of us could come back with trailers and haul out large pieces of trash and debris. After several weeks of getting nowhere and no contact I gave up and those boats I found are still sitting there. I understand they don't have the funding like always, but they should at least allow volunteers or organize a community cleanup day. ANYTHING! Right now they just wait for the water to cover it all back up...

@mojo.adventures

I've wondered that also for quite a while! What I came up with is the boat took on water near the rear, started sinking in back, then the weight of the engine did the rest and anchored it deep in the soft silt. It's pretty amazing though it is still pointed skyward. It does seem like the angle is sinking slightly. I would think the person who owns it absolutely knows it's there but they don't want to take the chance of getting a salvage bill from Uncle Sam after all these years!

I have a theory about droughts and lakes drying up. It's probably a weird theory, but I think it does have an impact on this problem. When I was growing up, we always just drank our water from the faucet / hosepipe, etc. Now everyone must have their water from a bottle. Think of all the BILLIONS of gallons of water being stored in bottles that are no longer part of a lake/pond/ocean, so that water cannot be evaporated and later returned to the earth. If all the bottles were emptied into Lake Mead, then you'd probably have a flooding problem. Removing so much water from the earth and storing in bottles has an impact IMO. Not sure God meant for it to be this way. I'm probably wrong, but I doubt I will change my mind.
@mojo.adventures
@mojo.adventures Год назад
Not a weird theory at all... you are definitely getting into some interesting research areas that will go as deep as you care to follow. It all involves money, greed, corruption and politics over our natural resourcs. There is no denying at this point that bottled water mega corps are a HUGE part of the water supply problem. They look to monopolize our vital resources. Part of my current research includes a certain bottled water company and their explotation of Strawberry Creek in CA, done with the approval and graces of the federal government. Another area is the Morongo Reservation spring that is being drained by another bottled mega corp with no requirements for reporting on amount taken. Examples of this can be found all over the country, and abroad the explotation can be even worse as standards for working and water usage reporting are less stringent. Follow the money...

Yes that's odd but the lake is very deep in the middle like a "V" channel. Only the most shallow parts dried up over last summer. If it drops as low as they predict next summer, there could be a lot more "discoveries" down there. No worries I'll be out looking again and making updates if so!

Make sure to drink 8 glasses of water a day California. If you drop the release rate to 0 it will fill right up. If you quit using the water on unneeded uses like grass, swimming pools and such there would be plenty. I can live on 15 gallons of water a week and it comes from rain

Ironic that in other parts of the country they have too much rain, coming with Hurricanes and such. If only ALL this excess water could be pumped towards Lake Mead instead of it flowing back in the ocean. Why is this lake sudden drying up quickly anyway? And why is nobody doing anything about it? Get water from elsewhere, use the Californian sun to build massive solar farms to distill Ocean water and pump that into the lake. If the US can spent 60 billion dollars of weapons to Ukraine it surely can spend a few billion dollars more on such a project (which also creates extra jobs).

@mojo.adventures
@mojo.adventures Год назад
It is a mixture of both though depending on which source you get your information, you will notice blame being placed heavily on one or the other usually. This allows the experts we trusted with managing our precious resources to wash their hands of the issue, and blame everyday folks who are just trying to survive in this environment. In my personal opinion- if it is a 20-year drought what were the human experts doing to prepare the last 20 years? Did they slow development? Did they build alternate water supply infrastructure for the heaviest users? NO. It is a failure all around, starting way back with the bad data they based the river flow on in the 1920's before the dam was even built. Now it's a finger pointing game with no real solutions in sight...

@mojo.adventures
@mojo.adventures Год назад
This region has been in the midst of a near 20-year drought that has been dryer than usual the whole time. When the dam was surveyed and constructed, it was done during one of the wettest periods recorded in the region. Now add on top of this endless development and construction in the desert southwest. Wasteful and uneccesary alfalfa, almond, and cotton farmers in the deserts of CA and AZ. More use of the river upstream before the dam. There just isn't enough water to go around anymore...
