My father was on one of those landing craft boats on D-Day. He said it was the most harrowing experience in his life. 80% of the men in his unit died that morning on the beaches of Normandy. Looking back it’s hard to imagine the sheer terror a young boy his age then endured that day. Rest In Peace Dad.

My grandfather was a coxswain on a Higgens boat from the USS SAMUEL CHASE. He made twelve runs into Omaha beach on D-day taking the 1st Infrantry (The Big Red One) ashore. Do you know what division he was in.
@jamescoleakaericunderwood2503
@@davidwhitten3596 wow! 12 runs...sheesh! My Dad was an Island Hopper Combat Engineer...lots of rides on those Higgins boats... First to hit the beacheads always heavy resistance...Bonzai Charges hand to hand were common occurrences.. crazy.. remember those Victory at Sea videos? He's in episode 13 Melanesian Nightmare..at the beginning he's getting off some rounds from his mortar position...next he's sleeping on his bunk right before the invasion of the Philippines..the narrator says..." Dawn will bring the test of combat the ordeal of fire!" Camera pans over to my Dad sleeping then the 15" guns open up! Boom Boom Boom Boom.... Then near the end of the video it shows a squad in a Higgins...my Dad looks right at the cameraman no one in the squad was speaking... really Harry! The USS INDIANAPOLIS escorted my Dad's unit to Australia from the Golden Gate in California to Australia... peace... Enjoyed reading both comments...

My grandfather rode ashore at Normandy in a Higgins boat. He made it as far as just outside Bastogne before being very badly wounded. Thankfully he survived. I learned more from him when I was growing up than from any other single person in my life. From gardening to how to sharpen an ax to how to shoot - and do it safely and well - to framing carpentry to fishing of all sorts. He was my primary inspiration for enlisting and serving. I'm new to your channel, but really enjoying your videos.

Watching as you spoke so respectfully of the Higgins boat design paid homage to every boot that exited that boat-many would realize that was their last ride, in a matter of minutes. The Higgins boat would carry troops (36 on each or a combo of Jeep and less men) onto Omaha Beach in France for the Normandy landings, In Africa and throughout the Pacific. Our heroic Marine Corps’ Island hopping campaign would not have been possible, without the Higgins. Dwight Eisenhower would say without the LCVP (land craft vehicle personnel) "the whole strategy of the war would have been different". 2400 Brave Americans took their last breath on Omaha, NEVER FORGET. ~ Well Done Sin City.

This is too bad about your girls, some of the fondest memories for myself and my sibling (both girls) is of evening hours spent with him exploring, on foot and by bike, the complex trail systems that were near our house, including unofficial trails (unpaved and mostly unmarked). Although by time I was a teen we had moved and the trails there weren't nearly as expansive or exciting as the old house's were!

I stumbled upon you guys a couple weeks ago. I enjoy the Lake Mead documentation especially what shows up after the water receeds. I too am a history buff so the WWII stuff is awesome. The fishing and outdoors are a bonus. I hung around & subscribed because as a father with a teen son, I quickly came to appreciate your relationship and interactions as father/son. It's families like yours that should be celebrated and emulated instead of the trash the media pushes like the Kardashians. No crazy stunts, no sex tapes, no endless sexual relationships and "bastard" children, no bottomless spending, no piss poor role modeling, no drama. Just a father & son living decent lives sharing their passion for life and the outdoors they love. With America crumbling before our eyes it's refreshing to see there are still good people out there.

My friends dad in NC built a fishing boat around two surplus Diesel engines from landing crafts, in the war he told me that when they hit the beach one engine ran full ahead to keep the craft on the beach, when it was time to leave the 2nd engine was put in full reverse to GE the hell out. On D day he was in the engine room awaiting the command for full reverse and manually engaged the engine. Running full ahead sucking sand into the impeller might have been a reason to rebuild a few engines.

I believe the Higgins boat was owned by a man named Harry Wham, he used it and lost it at mead, he had a scuba dive operation before diving got popular. I think it went down in the early 60s. He was killed by his wife in the '70s. Harry was a UDT with the US navy before there were Seal Teams. I learned how to dive in 1966 and made many dives below 100', I worked setting up the anchors and cables for the Callvile Bay Marine complete have many hundred hours of time. I did that in high school, a tremendous first-time job, better than flipping burgers. Then went to work for a 3 letter agency. Shame about the lake, I think they will never let it fill up even if the drought changes.

At 9:51 a.m. July 21, 1948, a B-29 Superfortress, weighing in at 104,556 pounds, took off from China Lake, California. It traveled to a test area near Lake Mead to conduct high-altitude atmospheric research. After the last measurements were taken, the pilot took the plane a little lower. Both the pilot and co-pilot thought they were around 400 feet above the lake’s surface, but the altimeter was reportedly off. Around 12:30 p.m. traveling at 230 miles per hour, the B-29 struck the water and sank to the bottom of Lake Mead where it still lies today.

As soon as I saw that bomber, I said to myself, that is a B17D or E model. The B29 that that left NWC China Lake did not make it to Mead and crashed on Randsburg Wash Range and the crew was lost. Stationed at NWC China Lake 1976-78, watched a film about the recovery of the aircraft and crew remains. A film shown to the SAR and Emergency Response Corpsmen. It was moved to the airfield at NAS China Lake for a crash investigation After the investigation the remains of the 29 were removed and ended up as a target on the main impact range. Not much was left by the end of 1978 when I left. I believe we are thinking about the same bird.
