First trip to lotw was this February fell I love with the area but wasn’t happy with the resort. Next time we will probably hire a guide for a day of pike fishing and to chase some better eyes. Maybe even sturgeon or burbot. Usually like to figure out fishing on my own but the extremely cold temps make a guide a must. If something happens with a truck or atv/sled in -30+ temps it becomes dangerous very quickly. Great video

Appreciate it! It’s an amazing fishery for sure… There is big everything you there! This winter has been a doozy as far as cold/blizzards. Made conditions miserable at times. Good luck the next time you go up!

Curious on your thoughts during years like this year? Warm weather and probably and earlier spring than normal. Warmer years with less ice i assume fish move in earlier like late February early March?

I will have a video coming out in a couple days and will be sharing my thoughts on that exact thing on the JMO podcast this week! Too much to explain on a reply, so check those out and hopefully that’ll answer your question!

When pike fishing lotw "shallow", how shallow are we talking? I fish out of warroad, zippel, morris point, cyrus, swift, and rainy river in baudette. Tried getting on some bigger fish last year, but got only 1 fish in cyrus bay that touched the magical 40" mark. All the rest were real small(22-27"). Ot was march 20th last year. Im not sure what was going on, but judging on my success vs others that weekend, im willing to bet it was on me location wise.

I’ve done most of my fishing out of warroad and on Jan/Feb it seems that 8-15 ft is the best. As it gets Feb/March it seems that 5-10 is typically better. Pike fishing up there is 100% a timing thing when it comes to big fish. It seems like there is usually a week where things are snapping like crazy and that varies a lot. There’s times where the big pike can be super active even in Jan/Feb, but it typically peaks in March. Here is a good write up by Target Walleye taking about pike! Hope it helps and good luck! targetwalleye.com/how-to-catch-giant-lake-of-the-woods-pike-on-tip-ups/

@@tjsguideservice thanks buddy. Im what most would consider to be a very accomplished angler, ive guided for a living but these damn late ice pike on lotw are tricky to consistantly target. Im used to guiding on very sterile bwca area lakes so shallow, very feryile waters with little structure are a head scratcher for me.
@tjsguideservice
@tjsguideservice 2 года назад
@@eduffy4937 I totally get that! They are funny because I know some excellent anglers who have fished the area for a long time struggle while someone who comes up without a lick of knowledge crush them! The earlier you go, the less fish are up shallow, but WAY less people. The later you go, there are more fish, but way more competition. Like I said, definitely comes down to picking the right few days to come up when they are going and that can be a guessing game, unfortunately!

Great stuff! When would you say the fish start moving up shallow again? Late March?
@tjsguideservice
@tjsguideservice 2 года назад
That is very dependent on the year. I have heard decent reports of fish being caught in the mid 20s right now. Sometimes as early as mid to end of February you might see fish moving in, but typically March is the month where it starts firing the best!
