The 3rd stop of our Aegean tour is Lake Salda.
Lake Salda, a 184-meter-deep natural wonder located in a closed basin in Yeshilova district of Burdur province of southwestern Türkiye, is a lake with an area of 44 square kilometers (about 17 square miles) and has no outflow.
This is one of the deepest, cleanest and clearest lakes in the country.
Lake Salda, located between the Taurus Mountains at an altitude of 1,193 meters (3,914 feet) above sea level, is very rich in magnesium, and the shore of the lake has a white color due to the high concentration of magnesium in the water.
Similarities between hydromagnesite-containing stromatolites currently formed in Lake Salda and carbonate-containing rocks on Mars are the subject of NASA's research. A lake in Türkiye's southwest may resemble a Mars long lost to billions of years of history, according to the US space agency.
Lake Salda is thought to be the only lake on Earth that has similar minerals and deltas to those found at Jezero Crater, which is thought to have once been the site of a sprawling lake, NASA said in a February 2021 blog post.
It is noteworthy that the current stromatolite formations in Lake Salda are a rare example in the world and that the lake has an ecologically unique feature with this aspect.
