Sam and I headed up to the eastern U.P. for our annual rock hunting trip on Lake Superior. This is our whole day distilled down to 27 minutes of the best we found.

- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

This is the cabbing machine I use:

- THE ROCK SHED -
I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

- AMAZON STOREFRONT -
I also have an Amazon storefront. This is where you can find other products you may have seen in my videos. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. It doesn't cost you extra.

Some observations. All of the fossils you're finding are from the Hudson Bay region and were brought down by glacial ice. Your blue chalcedony was likely encased in dolomite which is why it didn't bubble vigorously. However, that really reminds me of something you'd find in the desert southwest, not along the shores of Lake Superior. Your red "mystery rock" at 11:30 could be several things, but very likely something silicified. Would have to look at it in person to hazard any reasonable guess.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks Год назад
Thanks, Paul. It's always nice to have an actual geologist checking our work! I knew the fossils weren't from right there since there's no limestone bedrock like in Lake Huron near me. I had no idea they came all the way from Hudson Bay though. That's a fun fact! Thanks for the guess on the dolomite. It looked like sandstone or limestone to me. I wasn't aware that dolomite doesn't react strongly to acid. The only dolomite I'm really familiar with is Kona dolomite from Marquette. That mystery rock is the number one rock I'd like to have identified. I doubt there's a name for it since no one has every told me one, but there should be. It's very recognizable and very common in the eastern U.P. Everyone I go up there with picks a lot of them up, wondering if they're agates. They're clearly not agates, but they have some translucency to them that really grabs your attention. They also have several layers of what I assume are different minerals.

That was absolutely miserable. The mosquitos are just horrible in the woods. We even had a few on the beaches the days we were there. Mosquitos are usually not a problem on the beach. The mosquitos were just as bad at our campsite. We had a Thermacell that helped. We knew we weren't going to get a shower for four days, so neither of us really wanted to put on a lot of bug spray. The second night, we both headed to our tents at 8:00 because of the bugs. On the third night, we moved to the mouth of the Two Hearted River campground and there were no bugs at all.

Sam just had some amazing luck! He found quite a few really awesome agates! And you had a few too, but not as many as Sam found! There were quite a few not agates but were really cool and interesting looking rocks! The whole beach was covered in all different colors and types of beautiful rocks! I'm so used to our beaches and lakes here in Oregon, where 95% of the rocks are basalt so all you see is ugly dark grey to black rocks. Your beach is just an array of beautiful colors and patterns and not hardly a plain basalt rock out there! It's gorgeous! And I know the vast majority of them are granite, but they sure are a lovely granite! And they all are just so colorful! So it's no wonder that even your agates are that beautiful red! Great hunting, even though it was cold and wet, I'm sure the finds kind of made up for it, at least for Sam anyways! And that weird Rick Sam found and cut, was just strange! And it even has a weird reaction to the acid! I've never seen anything like that before! I have no idea! Thanks for sharing!
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks Год назад
The variety of rocks we have is just amazing. I have been to beaches where most of the rocks are the same color and it's just not as much fun. Cold and wet is just one of the things you have to deal with in the U.P. It's not a place for wimps. The great rocks make up for it. Sam is not just lucky. He consistently finds more than I do. I think he's just more focused than I am, plus he has younger eyes. He deserves credit for his skills.

I've only been in eastern Michigan once in my life, in mid-1960's, a trip to see my mother's 2nd cousins. Didn't know anything about Lake Superior Agates at that time, I've learned quite a bit since those long ago days. By the time the early 1970's came around, I had read articles in The Lapidary Journal, Rock & Gem, and least another non-technical magazine that I could understand w/o degrees in chemistry and geology. On a trip to Wisconsin, I located a rock shop and bought a bag of LSA. Cut a few pieces which have red banding and eyes. Beautiful stones. I'll bet you have found some interesting stones along those shores. Wherever I've traveled throughout the U.S. and eastern Canada I've always picked up stones: landscape stones alongside motels/hotels, gravel side-roads where I might have pulled over to take a break or eat a bite. Dug by fingers in the dirt, interesting looking stones. Can only guess what the mineral make-up is of these stones. Glad I've found your YT channel and will happily follow as you find stones to 'share'.

4:51 I LOVE BANDED IRON/formations. I have bins full. I only have two up on my end table that are Gorgeous! ♥️👑🌍 I have a question actually. Not to sure if Agate Dad answered me back. Can I tumble Banded Iron with Agates??
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks Год назад
I don't tumble many agates, but I mix banded iron with other beach rocks all the time and they do really well.

IT IS A SKIP ATOM. I am going far out on a limb here, but I believe 99% of Skippers are some variation of brown, so long as they are banded. I don't know why that seems to be, but I do have one Blue that is a Skipper. It's the only exception. I REALLY love the Brown Paint of that one. That is an EXCEPTIONAL FIND in any size. I call them Dinosaur Teeth Agates because they remind me of T-REX teeth. Also one of the most optical illusional of LSA's . If you notice when you get them wet they seem 3-dimensionally layered. I sometimes think that it's the result of possibly cooling faster than normal quartzy agates. I think I think too much about the formation of the Lake Superior Agate sometimes. 😄

Thanks for the confirmation. Skip an atom is one I haven't quite figured out yet.

I would much rather rockhound and dig for crystand in 47° temperature vs 99° temperature like I did today. I found out when I got home that the heat index today in my city was about a 100°.😰 But I still manage to come home with a bunch of crystals.😁

I mostly agree. One thing about hunting on the water though is that you can always jump in if you get too hot.

Connecticut's beaches which front on Long Island Sound have nothing except white quartz, granite and other types of rock. It's been years since I've walked the beaches off-season as over twelve years ago I developed a neurological foot/ankle disorder which does not permit me to drive.

Oh, that's a shame. My wife just had surgery on her big toe because it hurt her all the time. She's mostly healed up and I'm hoping she'll be able to get out with me more this summer.

I'm considering driving up to the south shore of Lake Superior. Where would you suggest between Duluth, MN and Marquette, MI that would give me the best chance for good agate and Petoskey specimens if I only have one day for looking?
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks Год назад
You're not going to find Petoskey Stones in Lake Superior. Those are found mostly in Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, south of a line from about Harbor Springs (on Lake Michigan) to Rogers City (on Lake Huron). As far as agates go, you can find them in the Duluth area all the way up to the Canada border, and I assume into Canada. From Duluth to The Keweenaw Peninsula, I'm not familiar with much. I went to Little Girl's Point this spring, but didn't find any agates there. They can be found there, but I think they get really picked over. I don't have any great suggestions for Marquette. In the Keweenaw, try Calumet Waterworks Park, the mouth of the Gratiot River, Great Sand Beach, and McLain State Park. There are other places, but those are all places I have had good luck at. Be aware that agates are very hard to find and you might not find any at all.

Hey love your videos! I used to hunt rocks with my grandad as a kid back in the 70's and am kinda interested in doing it again. Is your second stop at the blind sucker river accessible by car? Doing a road trip from Muskegon MI. to Chippewa Falls WI. the end of june so the wife and I are thinking about spending 3 or 4 days in the U.P. on the way home. We plan on doing a lot of rock hunting on our 9 day trip but are driving our car because all the miles we plan on driving. Thanks.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 8 месяцев назад
It's probably accessible, but I'd rather take something with more clearance. The road is somewhat rough and uneven. There's some sand in a couple places, but not too bad. You could always park on the road and walk in. It's not super far.

I have a rock like you just shown with bands on it but I'm not sure what it is but it does have some pretty wide and even tight bands on it set light brown and dark brown but not sure what it is but on the back it's got like a little Agate window on it which I thought was super cool but not sure what the Rock is that I have but it is a lot like the one you just shown

Can you do a live stream rock hunt so we all can yell at you guys in the live chat “no wait, over there, no over there” 😅
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks Год назад
I have definitely thought about doing that. One of the problems is that many of the beaches I go to don't have phone reception. I also don't know how I'd keep up with reading a stream of comments and also pick up rocks that everyone wanted. I think the whole thing might just be frustrating for everyone involved. I'll keep thinking about how I might be able to do that.
