Lake Superior Whitefish fishing is one of my favorite species to target in the late fall and early winter. We target them on the Flathead River. The Lake Superior Whitefish move out of Flathead Lake and into the Flathead River. They are moving into the river to spwan. This typically happens around the last week of October. They really move into the system when the weather turns cold and we get some rain. The rain increases the flows in the river and gets the fish that are staging in the lake on the move. Typically the colder and wetter the weather... The better the fishing. Spinning rods are definitely the most effective way to target them. Smaller green tubes or crayfish patterns are very effective. 1/8 jig heads are the perfect size. Fish your jigs on the bottom, bouncing along just off the bottom. Takes can be subtle so don't be afraid to set that hook on anything weird.
Montana Fishing Guides does guided Lake Superior Whitefish Trips from late October until around mid-December. We provide all the equipment, High-end spinning rods, quality reels with braided lines, and all the jigs needed for the day. We do trips from jet boats and hit lots of areas on the river that are not accessible on foot. We'll teach you how to do everything in a positive and fun environment.
