Lake Trout Blitz on Allagash Lake | Ice Fishing Maine Backcountry

Over night hot tent winter camping with my dog in the North Maine Woods ice fishing for native togue and brook trout.
After completing the pilot trip to Allagash Lake with Jake Feener from 29-31 January 2021; I decided to return during warmer weather and better conditions. It was a successful trip but not the same without that Feener guy.
Allagash Lake's principal fisheries are native brook trout and lake trout also known as togue but the lake also contains less targeted cusk and rare arctic char.

You got into some nice Lakers and Brookies. Was thinking maybe ski goggles or motorcycle for Gracy to protect her eyes from the glare and sun. Just some smokey gray would do it if she will wear it ? Some dogs don't mind at all..... Besides she would look Cool. Get em up Gracy.

We used to chop holes in 3 to 4 feet of ice with a chisel made from a water pipe and truck spring. We tied 45 pound-test braided line to an alder branch with canned sardines for bait, and newspaper to move the bait with the wind. We shoveled pathways through 2 to 3 feet of snow to each hole, and dragged small trees out on the lake to break the wind and build a fire. We never got skunked.

All the trouble to get to a remote lake, then you're on foot, holes dug by hand for a few baby touge? Maine has 6,000 lakes and ponds. Most accessible, cold water, with 8-pound average touge (my 50-year experience). If we catch n release only larger fish, maybe the population won't be stunted like Moosehead?
@guidoguido8677
@guidoguido8677 3 года назад
Idk where you fished, but average togue in maine is much smaller than 8lbs.. And allagash lake was just switched to 5lines this winter to thin out the small ones
@capturehishonor9292
@capturehishonor9292 3 года назад
@@guidoguido8677 Hey Guido! It's been my average for 50 years. Ice fishing is more about science than luck. You have to experiment rather than do what everyone else does (unless you're happy about 3 - 5 pounds). I've caught several touge and salmon when hundreds of others caught nothing more than once. Cheers
@guidoguido8677
@guidoguido8677 3 года назад
@@capturehishonor9292 congrats I suppose, ive caught a couple dozen over 10lbs, but caught 50 20" fish for every 30". skewed the odds in my case, but I like the little ones too
@capturehishonor9292
@capturehishonor9292 3 года назад
@@guidoguido8677 I suppose? hahaha. I am laughing now, but have been laughed at before... Mindset. I fished a tiny brook the day after deep sea fishing (Eastport). Caught 10 - 12 inch brookies (9 inches was previous PB). Same brook. Same fisherman. Different expectation.
@newdisc
@newdisc 3 года назад
Sometimes it's not about the access ease, or the size of catching fish.. remote locations on foot along with hand made holes are part of the adventure for some people.
