He improved greatly while in Washington. There’s not much more he needs to grow. His outside shot in particular has really come on the past year. And he is more aggressive and smart attacking the basket. He just needs more playing time, which was tough here in DC with Kuzma, Porzingis, and Gafford. But he was injured a lot. You guys are gonna really like him. We loved him here in DC. He dropped 30 points in his last game with the Wizards before he was traded!

The Wizards like to trade away great talent instead of working on them.

@@futurehofer1564 how so? The Lakers need forwards who aren't the height of 6'3 and they got a 6'8 24 year old forward at the cost of a guard whose soon out of the rotation and 2nd rounders that can be bought each draft

Kuzma takes 20 - 28 shot attempts per game while rui only take 5 - 8 shot attempts a night. It was clear that the wiz wants to build around kuzma who wants to get paid $30 million a year or he goes to another team.

I am a Rui supporter and hope he turns it around in LA but the problem was him in Washington. Rui believes he's a cornerstone player a team should build around, he is that player on the Japan national team, however he is far from one in the NBA. Rui refuses to be a supplementary catch and shoot guy, he wants to dribble the ball and be a teams main scorer, unfortunately he can't see the court or make passes once he starts dribbling. He puts his head down and only sees what 5 feet around, as evidenced by his horrendous 36 minute assist average (only 2 players in the league worse at his usage level). Additionally, he can't play NBA team defense. Don't get me wrong, he puts in the effort and has improved as an on the ball guy to average level, but no matter all the work put into him he still doesn't rotate or stay with team defensive schemes consistently. And finally, he's undersized for the game he plays with short arms. Against backups and weaker teams he gets by, but he suffers against quality competition. If he would accept the role of a 3 and D guy, and just be a slasher and finisher on offense, he would be a decent rotation guy offensively, below average defensively. Maybe LA will get him to face that truth, but if he continues to get out of control on the court and starts to fight with LeBron and AD for control of the ball like he'd do at Washington, he won't fit and will be a Montrezl Harrell personality issue.

@@gfoyle69 Hmm... Interesting point of view. I wonder if playing with true superstar veterans in LeBron and AD will more willing to defer and change the way he plays a bit. He could only every be the third option on the Lakers at best. As someone who has liked Rui from afar but hasn't really followed his career, it's a bit surprising to me to hear some of your thoughts. He's Japanese and grew up there so I wouldn't have expected him to have the type of personality issues that you mentioned considering how deferential and community driven the culture is (I lived there previously). Hopefully a new situation with the big time players and the bright lights can get him to accept his role better.

And at 0:22 and 7:33. You can tell Phil's first time guarding Rui he was impressed and taken aback by his size and strength. Rui has always had the physical tools and a solid base of skills that just needs to be showcased and refined more. He's a player that once he gains a bit of confidence and a consistent role you can see flourish.

@@RC-zb8tl Wiz isn’t in position to contend, and didn’t want to pay him and other players. No one is giving up 1st round picks this coming summer for obvious reasons, so mid level players are for sale. He can be great, just need time to develop.
