After leaving the headwaters, it's time to cross a group of lakes. First stop is Lake Bemidji. From there, we approach the most northern point of the river and then arrive to our first major portage around a dam. This episode is ALL ABOUT LAKES! We end it by paddling through the 5th largest lake in Minnesota, Lake WInnibigoshish!

I just found your channel. Very interesting! I live near Bemidji in the Mississippi Headwaters State Forest. I've paddled the distance from Itasca to Bemidji several times over the years, and from Bemidji to Cass Lake too. Camped many times in the Chippewa National Forest campgrounds on the east side of Cass Lake. A great place to stay.

You guys lucked out on the lakes! We got caught in a rain storm and were cold and miserable. We didn't know which way to go (and didn't have gps). It would be nice having modern gadgets!

This brings back memories. I tried this in 2010. Unfortunately, I started late in the season - Sept. - and got caught in the highest late season flooding on record. Doing the math via navigational aids I calculated I was doing around 10mph. I gave up at Red Wing, MN. The river was just flowing too swift for a solo canoeist with a loaded canoe. I almost went through the dam at Lock and Dam #3. (or was it #2 - the one with the busy freight train traffic on the banks). I am will try again!

God these videos are great but man this one was so annoying to watch every few minutes just when I would be getting back into it would freeze and that damn circle made of dots appears and even when it had loaded it would stay there until I manually went back like 10 seconds happened like 10 times so far and I'm still not finished. I can even watch the 4th one with no issues loading just this one.. STUPID RU-vid why don't you work for me?

For me this was just way to well prepared, organized and perfectly mapped out with a good budget, it almost feels like there is no chance of anything going wrong, the previous series were so off the wall and completely random they were fantastic to watch, one of the first things you did was lose your wallet, now thats an interesting trip! Don't get me wrong you are incredibly watch-able just naturally as a person, but the lack of general adventure in this series is a bit gutting.

Are you using the canoe paddles correctly? I have only seen the the straight style ones, but it seems like the curve should be facing towards you not away...

Great videos! I'm thinking of kayaking next year. What time of year did you start and when do you think would be best? I'd been considering fall, but worry that the weeds would be impossible by then. Love to hear your thoughts.

you don't have to change the side you're paddling on to steer (use a J stroke), only when you're tired of paddling on that side

The canoeists mostly did not wear life jackets, even when they got into deeper and faster waters with many big ships later on in their journey. So, what was the reason for going out on the big river without life jackets?

Just found your videos. Awesome! I grew up in Minnesota and have done many (much smaller) river trips with canoes. I laughed about the mosquitos you guys found. The joke in MN is that the mosquito is the state bird. It's a beautiful place though! One question: we always pulled our canoes all the way out of the water and then turned them outside down -- no bailing necessary. I was wondering why you guys didn't do this? Thanks.

I do understand where you're coming from, but I think that's what makes me like these videos so much. I admire how they don't have to depend entirely on spontaneous footage, and they're able to entertain with just nice footage of a journey that they didn't give up. I'm glad I stumbled upon this series, I'm going to keep watching. Keep up the good work, you guys deserve all the viewers you get

I absolutely LOVE watching this since my brothers and I have kayaked this portion of the river many times. We have also stayed at Crazy James a couple times as well. The difference is we caught lots of fresh walleye and perch for dinner to go along with our potatoes. Thanks for providing us with the video of this trip.
