Shreya Devnath is one of the young and talented disciples of Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman, who has also subsequently trained under Sri Lalgudi G.J.R. Krishnan. She is an active and busy member of the Lalgudi disciple family, well known for her solos as well as instrumental collaborations. She has curated and performed in a Carnatic Quartet, participated in duets with a percussionist, and collaborated with Tamil Nadu's "Villupaatu" folk musicians, in addition to partnering with instrumentalists on the Sitar, Chitravina and Flute. She has also accompanied many leading musicians, and performed widely in India and abroad. Academically, she has a Masters degree in Economics, and is also a talented writer.
She has numerous recollections of her guru's commitment to teaching and constant improvement. "He would insist that I record my concerts and then he would listen to it and offer constructive criticism" recalls Shreya. On one such occasion, she had played a few out-of-place briga phrases in the raga Kharaharapriya. Her guru promptly paused the recording and asked her why she had played those. She remembers not having a thoughtful reason for the phrases she had played, and therefore replied that "I don’t know.....it just came to me". Her guru went on to stress the importance of not playing something "just because your fingers can". To him, every phrase in an alapana had to have purpose, a context and a place in a broader picture. And the artiste needed to have a sense of proportion, aesthetic beauty and restraint.
Shreya has also witnessed her guru's kind and caring side. She would come for violin lessons straight from her school, so aunty (her guru's wife) would usually make sure to offer a banana or a light snack as she took care of all the disciples. Once when aunty was away, her guru took it upon himself to boil some milk and give her the usual Bournvita drink before proceeding to teach her that day. She carries this and many more memories in her mind to this day, and offers her tribute in this video.
