Lamar Odom: UNDERRATED or UNDERACHIEVER? The X-FACTOR of the Late-2000 LA Lakers Championships | FPP

In more recent years, Lamar Odom’s life was magnified for all the wrong reasons; culminating in a very public and almost fatal battle with addiction, made even more public by being involved with a Kardashian. But before all of this, Lamar Odom was one of the most unique players of the 21st century, who spent years with Kobe Bryant and eventually Pau Gasol as the Los Angeles Lakers won back to back championships in 2009 & 2010. Odom was a 6’10” do it all forward coming out of high school, who could play all 5 positions and looked NBA ready as a teenager. He would have a complicated route through college, struggling with academics and losing a scholarship with UNLV because of it; but he would eventually spend a season with Rhode Island where he would be one of the best players in the NCAA. Although he was unsure if he was ready, he would get drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers and start his career strong, eventually being joined by young talent like Darius Miles, Quentin Richardson, Corey Maggette and Elton Brand. But after a strong start, he declined and struggled with substance abuse suspensions. He was signed by the Miami Heat and had a redemption year alongside Dwyane Wade and Eddie Jones, but after one season, he would be sent to the Los Angeles Lakers in the Shaquille O’Neal trade. In LA, he would team up with Kobe Bryant then Pau Gasol and Ron Artest, helping the team recover from some disappointing years in the mid 2000s, to reaching the NBA Finals each year from 2008 to 2010, and winning two titles. He would also win the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year Award in 2011. A disappointing trade would see him spend a tumultuous year in Dallas before finishing his career with the LA Clippers. As was said before, his career has been overshadowed by what happened afterwards. But that should not take away from the fact that Lamar Odom was one of the most unique talents ever as a nearly 7 footer who could rebound and play down low, but also break you down off the dribble, finish at the rim and run the point with his exceptional passing ability. He had the tools to be an all time great, so his career can be looked at as underwhelming, but at his peak, he was one of the best point forwards of all time.

I would say both. Odom definitely did the little thing to raise a teams ceiling. On the other hand, he was a talented 6'10 guy who moved like a guard. He definitely could have been a multiple time all star but it seems he didn't have the personality or mentality to really do that. Still a very successful career and hope the best for him in his life after basketball.

Lamar’s prime was his rookie year. He never improved after being drafted. 17-8-4 He started 70 Games and shot 13 FGA PG. It’s right in line with the best season of his career and his career averages. Nothing wrong with 17-8-4 just if a rookie does that you would expect an all star all nba type player in his prime. But that pretty much was his prime.

Lamar Odom was one of the most enigmatic, frustrating players I've ever seen. He had all the physical tools and ability to be a perennial all-star. This guy on any given night could go out and give you 25-10 and 5, and then the very next game, it was as if he wasn't even on the floor. Once Pau came to the team, I think Lamar eased into his ideal role. He wasn't a "Scottie Pippen" to Kobe's "MJ", he was more of a 3rd wheel type guy, and for the most part, he was really good and most valuable in that role.

Odom had Hall of Fame talent! He was 6'10, could handle the ball better than most guards, and could pass and rebound. He could shoot the mid range and make an occasional three. He was a bad free throw shooter and never really improved in the NBA. He didn't work hard to get better after he entered the NBA.

I'm a heat fan, so he'll definitely get a video. I'm just holding off a little longer in the very slim chance he plays in any other professional league since he's still just 35. I just want to make sure that every player I do is completely done with their playing career, so the video will still hold up years from when I upload it

He just didn't have the personality to be a superstar. His turbulent life and the personality it forged made him susceptible to drug abuse, but the biggest thing is that Lamar preferred setting up other people rather than shouldering the scoring load. He wanted to be among his brothers, not above them. Absent the drugs he almost certainly has a much longer decline phase but I don't thing it was the drugs that kept him from a higher peak. It was humility, vulnerability, and his endless search for acceptance and camaraderie.
