Glad he gave Wrath big ups. It's always been in my top and people always seem to rank it super low for some reason. That album is full of back to back bangers.
@@jeeplivion Bro I got a Concrete Corner DVD when I bought I wanna say a Megadeth record, and the Laid to Rest video was on it. My dad just got us a new TV and sound system. Things _changed_ for me that day. I was now a man.
Definitely. I am a YUGE lamb of god fan. But i wasn't always and From the moment I heard "in your words", not only did I absolutely have to get the album, but I also jumped headfirst into the rest of their catalog. So good.
As The Palaces Burn will forever be my favorite metal album. Chris Adler's drumming on that album was so innovative and groundbreaking. He really outdid himself on tracks like Purified, 11th Hour, and Blood Junkie. In my opinion, this was when the band was at its prime.
Kinda dumb to say something will forever be the best. It's a self-fulfilling statement because if you that's your mindset, you're not really even giving a chance to anything new. But hey, more power to you.
@@jorssu13 who said any album "will forever be the best?" Either a comment was deleted or you are making things up, but it's difficult to tell because you didn't mention the person you were supposedly quoting or paraphrasing.
I’m blown away that he put New American Gospel as third shittiest, I *ABSOLUTELY LOVE* that album. I can still listen to it front to back all day any day. Terror and Hubris in the House of Frank Pollard, Black Label, chefs kiss.
Crazy that he put Sturm und Drang at the bottom, that album sounds great and is full of absolute bangers. But hey, it’s his list, and without him most of these songs wouldn’t exist so props.
I agree I loved this album. Personally didn’t like the self titled album or gospel much. Omens is still growing on me but the others are absolute bangers.
Ashes isn't just the best one in their catalog. It's one of the best in the history of metal. It's their black album. Their Painkiller. Their Countdown. Their everything.
Man and I'd put Sacrament in that spot. Then Palaces and Ashes. The rest, IMO, is meh. I don't get the love for Wrath here. I found that to be a regression - and a shitty sounding one at that.
@@BrofUJu I never said anything about it being one of the best. That was my first comment lol. But I do agree the black album was one of the best and it really defined the bands sound even though ride the lightning is my favorite. I'm just saying that's why that guy put it on the list because it sold the most copies and it was a turning point album that really made them popular.
Personally I really liked the original mix on As the Palaces Burn. It sounded so raw and agressive. The remix is good too, but feels more refined and tamed.
Yep. And he said it himself. They were extremely focused on "leveling up". Just like Slipknot with their first 2 albums. Those 1st couple debut efforts are completely genuine and original, while everything after sounds like it's imitating themselves.
Since hearing Wrath back in 2009 it's been my favourite LoG album, and the one I continue to go back to often today. Reclamation is a masterpiece of a song.
It's maybe my favourite, but tough call, lots of killer on that album, the three extra songs too..We Die Alone, Shoulder Of Your God, Condemn The Hive.
I can't imagine New American Gospel being written and recorded with their current skillset and production. It's already my #1, can't imagine it being any better.
Mark has always been my favorite member of the band, this is so cool getting his perspectives like this. And he's really making me want to listen to the self titled again. I remember liking it, but not getting pulled back to it.
Sorry to hear Resolution was a tough time period for you, Mark. But that album remains my favorite because it was the first new release of LoG when I became a fan and it blew me away from start to finish. I love every song on that album. Wrath is also a close second for me. Glad you showed that album some love.
Sacrament is a masterpiece in my opinion. Love every track and just stands apart from the rest for me both sonically and lyrically. Each song sounds massive and Blacken the cursed sun is incredible.
Ashes and Palaces have always remained my favorites, but thought maybe that was just because they are rooted so deep as the beginning for me. But nope, Mark confirms they’re just that damn good
Damn, Resolution is criminally underrated. Some of the best riffs ever on there. The Number Six, The Undertow, Terminally Unique, Desolation, Ghost Walking. Brilliant songs.
I wouldn’t say despite the production. I think the production is part of the reason it’s good. I’m also a big fan of the BTP album, which has a similar vibe and is so great in part because of the lower production values.
I dunno, he seemed pretty comfortable with that ("And now the 7th suckiest album..."), but more like he knew that every album would be somebody's favorite and didn't want to make them feel bad.
I feel that your new drummer put new life into the band. I hadn't listened to lamb of god since resolution. Saw them at knot fest 2012 when the album released. Watched the covid recordings with new drummer with new material and it was like listening to the band that got me into extreme metal for the first time.
Wow I can't believe he ranked Sacrament so low. I don't find it inconsistent I find it varied and diverse. Excellent transitions and use of dynamics. For me, their top-3 are Sacrament, Palaces and Ashes. 2 and 3 may flip spots depending on the day. After that? Nothing comes close in my opinion.
ATPB is definitely my fave. Growing up in RVA I saw you guys many times and really appreciate the hard work everyone has put into this band. Thank you.
Met Josh Wilbur and Mark Morton walking through Sam Ash on broad street near Richmond. Mark shook my hand and got me to pull an impromptu joke on Josh. Super down to earth guy, LOG has been so important to me as a guitarist and person. Inspires me everyday.
New American Gospel will always be in my top 5 albums of all time, the other 4 spots are ever revolving. It was so raw, dirty, you can feel the emotion.
Ashes and Resolution we're always my favorite. Resolution, in terms of me conquering my addiction problem, means so much to me. The lyrics, and riffs are just so good.
As The Palaces Is Burn to this day is my favorite LoG record. I agree with what he said about "urgency". It just feels like this unstoppable force that is just trying to pummel you into submission.
Been saying this for years, but if LoG went back and re-recorded New American Gospel, that would be INSANE. Couldn't imagine some of those songs with modern production
It's good in the sense that the grooves are very intense but it is lacking in technical guitar work. You don't get awe struck by the technicality of the grooves while theyre happening like you do on later records.
It’s wild that he put Sturm und Drang, I wasn’t expecting that at all. It’s gotta be my favourite Lamb of God album. I agree with him on Sacrament being way inconsistent though. My list would probably be: 1. VII: Sturm und Drang 2. Ashes of the Wake 3. Wrath 4. Lamb of God 5. As the Palaces Burn 6. Resolution 7. Sacrament 8. New American Gospel
I love LOG but it's crazy to me how between this, the Sacrament documentary, and other interviews I've seen, it is clear that my opinion of their music and the band members' opinion of their own music are so incredibly different. To put it in perspective, this would've been my list (without reading the original Revolver article): 8 - Sturm Und Drang 7 - New American Gospel 6 - Wrath 5 - Palaces 4 - Self Titled 3 - Ashes 2 - Resolution 1- Sacrament
Yes! Some love for ATPB! Everyone raves about AOTW but I always favored ATPB far more! That album was a game changer. I was about 23 when it came out and I still remember listening to ‘11th Hour’ for the first time and I could not believe what I was hearing. The riffs, the tone for each individual instrument had a unique sound, the song writing, Randys voice…it all connected SO well. It was a mix between Megadeth and Pantera but with a modern vibe. I know I’m gonna get a lot of shit for this but I thought AOTW was a step down compared to this album, WAY down. The grit and guts were gone. For me, the production was a bit too polished. IMO, what Master of Puppets was in the 80’s and Vulgar Display of Power was in the 90’s, As The Palaces Burn was THAT album for the 2000’s 🤘🏼
My list 1: Sacrament 2: Wrath 3: Ashes of the Wake 4: As the Palaces Burn 5: New American Gospel 6: Sturm und Drang (probably the most unique sounding album) 7: Resolution 8: Lamb of God
Ashes of the Wake is, IMO, their best. As the Palaces Burn is my second favorite. I really like New American Gospel because it's what I first listened to. Everything from Sacrament on has had good songs but it seemed like less than Ashes of the Wake to me.
Same, Ashes of the wake was really driving forward when they got really tight and defined with their sound. But also I think it had some of the deepest lyrics, layers of allegory and metaphor
Same. It was also my introduction to the band back in highschool and it gets that extra little boost for being in guitar hero when everyone was playing that shit. One of the best metal records of all time period.
Started listening to LoG several month before Wrath was released. And when it came out, I became one of my most listened to album ever at that point. And the ending with Reclamation ... goosbumps!
As the Palaces Burn is the album that really made me grind guitar playing and getting really good. The remix/remaster is godly fantastic I encourage re-listening to the remaster!
Totaly agreed a to z. Plus Kiladelphia is the closest to my heart. Goddamm these New American Gospel song sound phenomenal. I really wish they redo this set live in today age 🖤
To me Sturm und Drang is a solid album. Can't really think of any filler song, sound is amazing, the riffs, the drums and the vocals are all in place. Has to be said it was my first LoG record, so I might be biased. I agree with Sacrament, I didn't really like it as a whole, but it does have some of the best LoG songs. And I admit I haven't got around to listen to all of the Lamb of God albums from start to finish yet, but I can safely say this: Ashes of the Wake is my all time favourite record. I love the chaos that is present throughout the album, the songs structurally being all over the place, it's so raw and unpredictable. Randy's vocals in Break You are phenomenal. The whole thing is a masterpiece. I've listened to it from start to finish at least a hundred times and still can't get enough. Maybe that chaos is what I'm missing from the 2020 record, it's still solid, but it sounds, I dunno, a bit refined? Looking forward to Omens.
Sturm un Drang would be a solid record top to bottom if it weren't for Delusion Pandemic and Engage the Fear Machine those two songs are unfortunately a giant stinking pile of cringe thanks to Randy's cringe worthy lyrics and his stupid Sink or Swim lyric overtop of the breakdown after giving a motivational speech. Please keep the motivational speeches out of your songs randy they Sink or Swim sounds ridiculous in a screaming heavy metal voice. Somehow we went from see who gives a fuck to SINK OR SWIIIIIIIIIM Two of the worst Lamb of god songs ever along with Everything or Nothing from Wrath.
Ashes of the Wake is my personal favorite and really is LoG’s equivalent of Master of Puppets. I’d say their self titled album is up there too. The production of ATPB might have been subpar but it gave the album a uniquely raw sound.
Well, that was an amazing video. Thank you for that, Mark! I was hanging on every word you were saying, lol...loved it. I've been a fan since Ashes, and from my point of view--Sturm Ung Drang is most definitely near the top of my list, along with Ashes of course, Self Titled VII, and Wrath. No specific order there. The way you guys have evolved through the years is unmatched. It's as if you learn from each previous album, and with every new album that comes out, I become a bigger fan (didn't know that was possible!) You guys hold a very special place in my heart, and that will never change!🖤
Resolution and Sturm Und Drang are like two of my favorites haha, with Sacrament in my top 3 as well. Let's just say I feel quite differently about this list. Resolution I do agree is too long.
1. Ashes / Palace 2. New American Gospel (i find myself re-listening to this one the most nowdays. the drum sound does something for me) this album is raw perfection 3. Sacrament (same vein as Ashes but more poppy, the good tracks really work, the rest not so much) 4. everything else....
@@idontevenlikemoney Wrath put me to sleep, i remembering not being able to finish a single song. if you got some recommendations i'd love to listen and re-evaluate. why people loved Wrath is a mystery to me
The first time I heard Wrath all the way through I had just left the hospital after a suicide attempt. It will always have a special place in my heart.
Damn that's tough lol, for me Sturm un drang is pretty high. Still echoes, 512, overlord, and nightmare seeker are all bangers. Front to back I'd give Wrath #1.
I find it pretty hard to rank them individually but a rough tier list of my current thoughts would be: A: Ashes / Palaces / Killadelphia B: Sacrament / Wrath / BTP C: Gospel / Resolution / Legion XX D: Sturm / LoG Really I love pretty much every song in A & B tier though, that’s just for the sake of trying to have a little bit of order. Maybe at some point I’ll like the more recent stuff but for now I’m not feeling it.
Ashes is so perfectly balanced between cohesive/well-polished and raw/wild. The soundscape is brutal but tight. The songs are meandering but then hit so hard at the right times. Definitely their best.
Wrath was the first Lamb of God record I ever bought and boy and howdy at 17 in Orange County VA, that album fucking spoke to me. What a savage banger of a great album. Also, Palaces sounds like it, the album, was on coke. Big fan.
I guess we all listen to music from a different place - most people who play guitar will base their decision on the guitar parts, drummers on the drum parts, non-musicians on how it makes them feel, audiophiles will rank things based on production values etc. (and of course we're all a bit of each of these so we're all somewhere a combination of these things) - for me my main interest in Lamb of God comes from the combination of their unique sound, combination of rawness with technical ability and huge songs filled with memorable riffs. But most of all there's some really unique weird shit going on. And to me that's why I like their first 3 albums best. I get why he didn't rank NAG so high as it's their first, but I really love the creativity on that, and I feel that these really creative, surprising, unique parts have been more and more absent from their later records. Maybe I need to listen to everything more, but from Sacrament on I just lost interest because every song basically sounded the same, unlike the earlier stuff where each song was immediately recognizable for having this or that super weird or cool little bit going on. I think Mark's playing was a big part of that too. Hope they'll get more weird and creative in the future.
As the palaces burn is 100% #1 on my list as well! The album in my life was the period of time where it straight up had everything i wanted in a band and helped shaped my metal tastes for many years to come to current! Love that album and its what turned me on to LOG and i was lucky enough to see them sooo many times between As the palaces burn and ashes of the wake! And i met Mark after a show in Towson Maryland in a small ass club called Richer theater. Super super cool guy like genuinely ☺️
I'm making my way through learning the palaces record. My personal favorite album is probably wrath. As mark said its extremely consistent all the way through it keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way through.
Really cool to hear Mark's perspective on the catalog! My ranking (not yet including "Omens", which is killer): 8) New American Gospel 7) As the Palaces Burn 6) Sturm Un Drang 5) Resolution 4) Wrath 3) Sacrament 2) Self-titled 1) Ashes of the Wake Love them all, though, and I listen to all of them regularly. "Omens" is incredible as well, but I've only listened to it 4 times through, so I'll need more time with it before deciding where I'd rank it.
Great ranking, love the argumentation behind it. Mark is always great to hear 👌And I agree completely, you gotta rank them as albums, and not pick which ones have most of your favorite songs. I would switch #2 and #1 though, and I'm not yet sure about where to put the last album (the self titled).. Great video!
As someone who ranked in the top 2% listeners the past 2 years running (according to Spotify), here’s my list: 1. Sacrament 2. Wrath 3. Ashes of the Wake 4. Resolution 5. Lamb of God (2020) 6. Omens 7. As the Palaces Burn 8. Sturm und Drang 9. New American Gospel
Although "Laid to Rest" it's my favourite song I think Ashes of the Wake it's all-over the place as an album. I like way more the self titled album for its coherence
Wrath was the album that got me into Lamb of God. I'll never forget my brother playing "Broken Hands" for me for the first time. It grew on me and I ended up eventually stealing his CD
That was one of my first LoG songs as well. The way Randy just comes in hot with "Bled of all you had to lose!" Before you even hear anything else. Fantastic.
wrath was the first album i bought but resolution came out right when i was graduating high school and i remember the build up to its release and waiting to buy it and just blasting the hell out of it in my car and room every chance i got it was so different from everything else that was out at the time and it is still my favorite to this day
Just finished Mark's book and its a great insight into what they experienced during recording these albums. My personal favorite is Sacrament then Wrath
As the palaces burn and Ashes of the Wake are easily 1 and 2 for me. After that probably Wrath, VII, self titled, Sacrament and finally Resolution. I have a feeling Omens is gonna be up there from what I've heard so far.
New American Gospel will always be my favourite precisely because it’s a bit rough around the edges, lamb of god’s heaviest riffs and crustiest delivery is on that record and I just love it
Straight up As the Palaces Burn is my favorite, that was my introduction to LOG and man it never gets hold, just heavy, full of emotion, raw, definitely my favorite. Ashes would have to come in 2nd. All in all, love all yalls work
