I remember, it was 1998, in a little garage in Kings Cross, London, hearing the sweet V8 from the Uracco. It really is magical, because it has a mix of American and Italian V8 tones.
I just love the 70's sports cars, no spoilers or active aero. Just tons of character (and dodgy build quality). My dream garage consists mostly of 60's and 70's cars. I'll need a few though just so at least a few of them work!! Well done Iain. 👌👌
I have never come across a better explaining car specialist than Mr. Tyrrell - really impressive - this man is the real deal - he know all the little details that makes his videos so special - not to mention that he seems to be kind and gentle with a fine sense of humor and his relaxed and calm way to explain things is really wonderful!
To me, the styling of the Urraco is timeless (the Jalpa - not so much). I very much appreciate it when you provide historical context; very enjoyable indeed, and it is one (of many) thing that sets you apart. Looking forward to Parts 2 & 3!
Yes, it's one of those classic designs. Reminds me a bit - a _LOT_ - of the De Tomaso Mangusta and the Pantera before it started growing fender flares.
I find the Jalpa much more appealing. But then again I like the 80's boxy/wedge designs more, sounds sacrilegious but the 037 is a better looking machine than the Stratos IMO.

Look at an Urraco and a Countach from 1973 parked next to eachother. Then look at a Jalpa and Countach from 1980 parked next to each . It is very seldom the sequel looks better than the original.
Another Jewell of a car. Watching this and Harry’s video makes you realise how seriously we have lost the plot. Today’s cars are so massively over weight, one can’t help but wonder where we’d be if a different direction had been taken by legislators and manufacturers. One thing an electric car will never do is sound like a V8 or a flat six or drive like these two cars do, we are undoubtedly in the process of loosing something precious. Two fabulous videos thanks to Iain and Harry.
Very true. Today's cars have grown enormously in size (compare an original Mini or Focus with it's modern counterpart, for example). Add the extra bracing, etc to pass crash tests and obesity is the inevitable result.
There have been many different V8 engines throughout the years, and most of them sound good. But very few if any sound as good as what was captured at @13:55. Absolutely spectacular.
I was wondering what all the fuss was about the exhaust note until 13:55 then Oh I get it! I also have to be fair and recalibrate my ear not to compare it to some of the 500+ hp V8’s we have today.

Well I enjoyed that Tyrrell brought back some wonderful memories having had the pleasure of driving one of these for a week, I can concur this has one of the most amazing sounding engines, fast it isn't but the mechanical tunes is close to an orchestra of pistons and valves in harmony. One thing which we didn't experience was the startup. To start the engine you had to pump the throttle 3x to fill the carbs and when turning the key the lazy starter would allow all the cylinders to fire individually until all 8 erupted in symphony!! The oil/petrol smells were sublime and the interior was pure 70's Italia. To drive I to felt it wasn't something to throw down a road especially with the old tyres, it wasn't particularly fast, but as an experience it was amazing. You're like a kid in a candy store when driving this thing Tyrrell! I love the way you tune these carbs. I used to tune carbs on trucks a long time ago but with a meter.
I've owned a 3litr and a Jalpa. Wait to you hear the Jalpa with the roof off. An unloved car but you will want after Ian has done his stuff. Well done again.
These are all beautiful baby Lambo’s, always had a soft spot for each of these cars, watching you tune the carburettors on the Urracco was special, it’s always great to watch a master technician at work!
What a beautiful car. This and the Maserati Khamsin are two of my favorite Gandini designs. I hope to see an episode about a Khamsin some day. They are truly gorgeous.
Always loved the Urraco, perfect filling of its wheel arches and stance. I had a metallic-green model (Corgi? Matchbox? Really can't remember now) when I was 11 or 12, and the Wheeler Dealer guys got one in the same colour to work on a while back. Perfect colour for it IMO. I was royally p!ssed-off at Clarkson, Hammond and May for abusing one almost to destruction - they must have known how rare it is. ETA >> I guess Iain will cover this later, but they did enlarge the engine to 3l (and changed it to chain-driven quad-cam, presumably regretting image of a built-to-a-price belt/single cam and returning to a more traditional 'Italian thoroughbred' design) for the last couple of hundred Urracos (out of only 700 total).
That show is when I stopped watching it. The other one that sickened me was when Clarkson went on and on about the features of the C7 Corvette, which is indisputably a world-class car, and decrying that it was "American". What a POS.
That WD green Uracco is the must have colour for me. I found out recently Edd bought it. As for that Top Gear episode, just don't go there. I did enjoy the whole series but not that episode or the one with the 944 and 928. I won't watch those again
@@ToyKingWonder Clarkson is an idiot anyway. I doubt he even knows how to check the engine oil on a car. He possesses very little knowledge on mechanical things in my opinion. James May is far more educated that the Clarkson prat.
I still have a curved tool with a knob on it, very much like this one, 1/4 inch drive socket came with it. Oddly, it was made by Snap-On, and it came in a purple box with Compaq written on it. It was to remove the spring loaded, captive nut that held on the power supply of the original Compaq portable computer.

Thanks Iain, another very enjoyable "Behind the Scenes" video at the workshop. Italian born V engines, regardless of 6, 8 or 12 cylinders all seem to sound ANGRY! I love them. Whether it's a Busso V6 or a Columbo V12, they are sweet, sweet music which is such a vital element to the enjoyment of any classic car. Looking forward to enjoying parts 2 & 3 of the Baby Bulls.
Each one of these videos is so informative, just wish I could remember half of it. Love the way Iain tunes the carbs by ear! Looking forward to the next two episodes.
Pure class. Such a great car and the induction sound from that engine is glorious. I really miss having such a direct link between foot, throttle and something happening. Modern cars and their drive by wire is totally numb when compared to a good old cable making something happen as asked and not when the computer thinks your ready for a bit more power. Roll on Part 2 & 3 :)
It's amazing to me that the first car I had with MacPherson struts in it was a 1973 Mercury Capri 2.6 V6. (Or was it a 2.8L?). I bought it in about 1984 when I was 17 or so. Then I bought another one. These were the European Ford cars that were imported from Germany to Canada at the time. I didn't know what they were when I got the car (Neither the Struts nor the cars LOL) but I knew they needed the Struts to be replaced on both badly. The first car I bought had been massively Modified and had the 2.6L V6 bored out to close to 3 liters I think and race cam and pistons added as well as Hooker Headers Edlebrock High Rise Manifold and four barrel Carb. The thing went like MAD!! I remember driving it to see how fast it's top speed would be and I broke the Speedo (it was going out already lol) but not until I wrapped it round the dial to the "M" on the "MPH" written at the bottom of the speedometer way past the 140mph mark. LOL. It is still one of the dumbest things I think I ever did because the struts were so bad that the car was hopping up and down as the road undulated and it was just insanely Sketch! LOL> I miss those two cars! At least I still have a picture of it with the huge whale tail it had.

I must say it, as someone who has watched every single one of your videos, a few things really came out on this video Iain. Firstly, the whole video seemed to flow really well, you’re obviously becoming a seasoned presenter now! Secondly, the SOUND! What a noise that car makes and it shows on your face when you push on the accelerator peddle! Can’t wait for the next two in this series, credit where it’s due, you’re doing a really superb job!
One of my all time favorite cars. I love the design... I love the Mid engine V-8. When I'm rich, I will have a 911, but would put my Uracco by its side. I drove in a Jalpa once.. It indeed sounded amazing! Thank you for showing this jewel.

The Urraco might have the nicest sounding V8 engine ever made. Just gorgeous cars from tip to tail. Thank you for this video Iain, it's so hard to find clips of these cars actually running. The roar under full acceleration has to be the sweetest engine sound on the planet.
In the 90's I lived in India. Outside a Delhi hotel I used to visit was a silver Urraco. It never moved, but looked like a space ship compared to the surroundings & doormen in multi coloured traditional dress

I always loved those baby Lamborghini, and I am more that happy they got some recognition now. Thanks for this great video and all the other. What a dream job been surrounded by all of those fantastic cars. Only one thing. Urraco does mean little bull but in Spanish not Italian
Yes that sound was good. I love to hear the sound of my old car when I’m out on it with the hood down! I went to the scramble at Bicester yesterday with my son and there were one or two cars displaying their exhaust notes which made that day there’s no doubt that a well tuned engine running well with a nice exhaust note does make life better!
You should hear some of the very early Ferraris. Imagine a 1947 125 S with a _1.5 litre V12._ Such a lovely mechanical sound, full of quiet ticks and rattles and whirring. And the Alfa Romeo Montreal was a mere 2.6 V8, although it sounded much meatier. Small capacity engines with lots of cylinders may not be the most efficient, but they definitely have the best sound. :-)

Owned and drove daily a silver Australian delivery 3000 for years. Loved it. Super reliable. I used to start it up just to listen to the engine rip the airwaves. Sounded like a 60s grand prix racer and the snap, crackle pop on the overrun was a hoot. I let my wife do the schoolrun with my daughters just so I could listen to the engine sound disappear into the distance. If you ever get the chance to own a 3000, do not hesitate.

There was a p300 Urracco as well, didn't hear it mentioned, had a different front 'boot' panel with different slats , I managed to scrounge the seperate sales brochures for the Urracco p250, Urracco p300, Silhouette and Espada.
Olivetti! That brings back memories of stylish if not great PCs from the 80s. They’re still around as company today too, apparently. Anyway, the Urraco is so much better looking than its successors IMO, especially the blocky heavy looking Jalpa. Which I thought was already quite ugly when it was new!
A much more insightful and appreciative presentation than another British program that featured an Urraco. At least the clock got credit for being correct.
As much as I love the looks and sound of this car, The Classic Lambo for me would still be the Espada S3. Fastest 4-seater GT decades before M5 was even thought of.
LOVE that carb adjusting tool...I need to search some old-timers' tool chests to see if I can find something like it. Would make it much more likely that I keep 6-cyl webers than going efi.
