Crystal Garden in Chicago also has a display. Its 4 jets that bounce around, right over your head. It was the first time I saw an example of laminar flow, but I did not know it at the time, I was like 8!
The World Of Coke, which is the Coca Cola museum in Atlanta, used to have these laminar flow fountains in their tasting room at the end of the tour. You would walk down this corridor of soda dispensers with a tasting cup. Behind all of the soda dispensers were these fountains set several feet back so that when you put your cup in the dispenser and pressed a button, a stream of what I thought was soda at the time (probably was just tinted water) shot from the rear fountain in a perfect arc into the dispenser which would then dispense the soda. For a 9 year old, that was the coolest thing ever. For a 34yo, it is still pretty darn awesome! Thanks for sharing this video, Destin!
+NightHawkInLight You know, the more I am on RU-vid, the more I find out how close some of my favorite youtubers are to me or have been... Hello from dearborn!
I should mention, others came up with DestinEveryDay. I saw it from a few others in earlier comments. I was just +1ing the suggestion and giving my impression of why it works well.
+John Doe Never mind, after reading your other posts I have realized that you are a simple troll. (Which is saying something). I hereby discontinue this conversation.
I got beer (Blue moon) and french toast for breakfast at that airport after 1 month in china. Then I walked down and watched that fountain. Love your work!!
Detroit is my home airport. That fountain is great. You wouldn't believe how many people don't realize how it works and go and lean against it to tie a shoe or something and end up with wet pants.
Our hematology analyzers use laminar flow to line the blood cells in a single row. Amazing the people that take this knowledge and apply it to real world problem solving.
"DestinEveryDay". Im not the first to say it (+Dan Radez), but I like it. Most of the videos on this channel are Destin geeking out over little things, and I love it! Your such a kid Destin, stay that way.
I remember my Freshman year of high school after school ended, I went with my parents on a trip to Germany, and we had to stop in Detroit for like six hours, as a freshman I saw this and watched it for like an an hour and a half straight, my engineer brain was so fascinated and i did little other exploring except watch this. That was three years ago and I still love it, but now as an artist I love how this captures an audience for more than a fleeting glance. Amazing!
I found this mesmerizing when I first saw it in the documentary about the Burj Al Arab, after all these years it's still something really cool to look at.
+John Doe if it wasn't clear, he tried to speak in a way that you will understand. But it's really hard to imitate an 8 years old :/ Please forgive his rudeness. John snow.
I was stuck in the DTW for about 12 hours over the holidays. I watched that fountain for a while. Another fun thing is that the rail cars are cable driven with the electric motors at the far ends outside the lobby area, which is why they're so quiet. Also, I like "Funner Every Day."
I remember a few years back at the Cleveland auto show there was a fountain that looked exactly the same, I think I watched that fountain for a half hour straight.
Destiner Every Day You're so awesome, you deserve to put your name on your channel! Much love from a second year aerospace engineering student from Montreal, Canada
I'm sitting in the Detroit airport right now waiting for my flight to Milan. My gate is adjacent to the fountain and I just stood and watched it for 10 minutes. It's a very well designed water feature. Designed and manufactured by WET Design. Known for many famous fountains such as the ones in front of the Bellagio in Las Vegas. This is one of their smaller works but still very impressive.
Hey Destin, I would call it "Useful University" so you could use the pun useful YOU. Many years ago I imagined an educational series explaining the science behind everyday things, the origins of things we take for granted, and modern day survival skills, then I found channels like yours and veritasium... and you guys just do it so darn well!
I liked funner every day. I fit the channel very well. Also I find it funny how you realized that guy was an engineer because both his interest in the fountain and how introverted he was when talking to you. We are too predictable.
Adventure Every Day and I loved seeing the reflections in the water when you zoomed in on the one spigot. you could see the other fountains reflections at about 1:20. And your lovely wife is wearing your hat. I love the way you love each other.
When all the jets were firing at the same time towards the end it looked to me like flightpaths from different places :) really awesome to get to share this with you, would love to see it in real life sometime
I remember seeing this (or a similar) fountain when I was much younger. It's still so cool to see. Especially at the end where it almost looks like a stroboscopic camera trick!
EveryOtherDay, also Detroit airport is one of the cooler airports I've been to in the US. But I'm from Singapore, our Changi Airport is still the best.
There's one of these in Tower City in downtown Cleveland. I used to stare at it until my family finally realized I was gone and came running back to grab my arm.
I was wondering how I got subscribed to SmaterEveryDay2.... took me a second to realize it was actually FunnerEveryDay. I personally think that FunnerEveryDay is a great name.
I remember when I visited the World of Coca Cola in Atlanta and they had a fountain like this to fill your cup with soda. I thought it was the coolest thing ever.
The Fountain made by WET Design (Same company that made the Bellagio Fountain in Las Vegas) built this fountain using their powerful laminar flow technology! At some points, these jets are laser powered and looks like laser beams creating an arch over the water basin. Such a cool fountain to see whiles waiting for a flight!
Every time we're flying through Detroit, this is a stop for me and the kids It was all fun and games until my two year old son leaned up against the side trying to get a better look. Since the water leaves the fountain over the sides, this was not a moment for us.
It would be really cool if there were color changing LEDs in the nozzles. The light would travel through the streams of water and follow the arc like a fiber optic cable . That would look amazing!
I quite liked "FunnerEveryDay": it shows connection to the main channel and it emphasizes that it's less serious. Btw, I also quite like this fountain: notice how water flows from the nozzles in six spots arranged in a star pattern. Also the "Illy" sign behind it makes me hopeful that somewhere in the US there is a place for "real coffee" ;) Espresso FTW! Bye.
Man, first +MichaelAranda drives right past the Detroit airport on I-94 about a month ago (from Toronto to Chicago) and now Destin is at the Detroit airport! I live two miles north of the airport so I feel like you guys were so close, but yet so far! lol! 😉 Safe travels!
Thanks to the Mythbusters, I know what Laminar Flow is. And I've seen these things before, one of the malls in my home town of Reno Nevada actually has one of these fountains, though it's outdoors, and currently not operating due to the cold temperatures. First one I saw was at Six Flags Marine World when it was still called Marine World Africa USA. Another one I saw in my first ever trip to Epcot at Walt Disney World. They're cool, and I really wish more would be made.
Some newer ones like that use air rams. Air rams water out of a tank pipe, then water pressure pushes it back n refills the pipe. Permanent flow ones tend to have pumps and valves but some use both.
There is quite similar fountain at a mall close to my house. It uses the water streams kinda as optic fiber so the water glows at the end of a stream. It looks super cool
there is a fountain like this in budapest in one of the first malls ever built in hungary called westend city center. its been built in around 2000 i think. maybe there's video of it on youtube as well
Smarter than Smarter every day channel? lol Nice to say hello to you Destin thankyou for bringing your awesome take on the worlds wonders for little old me all the way in New Zealand to appreciate and wonder with you and for you ta tell me WTF is going on! hahaha I am simply in awe of the awesome amazing places that you just get to "visit" and the people you meet along the way! Nice to know that ALL of the worlds not crazy just bits of it lol anyways keep up the awesome productions and I shall carry on being amazed from getting smarter and smarter every day Cheers :)
You can always find the engineers around the laminar flow fountains. I think you should call it The Beauty of Engineering, seems like many of your videos relate to that. Or maybe How Engineers Think. Just spit balling here, put it to a vote here or over on Patreon.
I liked "funner every day"... But if you want something else: "smarter ever day rough cuts", "SED: overflow", "random every day", ps: welcome to the north. have a nice visit. drive carefully! :-)
I didn't even realise that you changed the name of this channel. I still prefer "Funner everyday " because this channel always had the cool "fun" stuff, without all the technical explanation like on smarter.
I used to love coming here and watching the fountain between flights, very relaxing. And I've also wondered how they got it to propel laminar jets so consistently! Upcoming video, perhaps?
I'm a little late to this party, but my thought is that since it's your "other" channel is should be called "Smarter Every Other Day" - but maybe that's just me :-)
I like SmatererEveryDay. Might be a bit confusing for people though and I know I'd me macking typos all the time... Laminar flow fountains are awesome too. I particularly like it when they set them to music or shine light/lasers through them.
