Laminated Workbench Top - How To Make (shipping container shop)

Making a laminated workbench top for the shipping container shop with standard lumber and basic tools! This is only half of the workbench project but I think it is a good "how to" of rather unconventional methods to make a laminated or butcherblock style work surface or table top. No special woodworking tools needed. No jointer, no biscuits, no planer, no pipe clamps... no problem ;)
... but I guess a table saw is sorta special...but it doesn't have to be a fancy one.. mine was $100 on craigslist!!
I had limited time to do this, so the rest of the workbench will be coming in a few weeks. Let me know if you have any questions:)

Your assistant is great! My kids learned hands-on in my shop, and have picked up the DIY bug in their adulthood. Agree the fanciest tools are not necessary.

This video was very helpful. I want to build a simple, yet sturdy bench and do not have all of the tools that many other videos feature. I don't need a 500-year bench - just one that will do the trick for the projects I will be doing. Thanks, great build!

You may not have as many tools as you would like to have but what you do have you use extremely well and it shows. The top is well constructed and looks good and that is all that matters. Thanks for sharing this tutorial as it encourages me to think out of the box too.

Ahh the laminated table top. One of my favorites. My current computer desk that I'm typing on, as of now, is very similar. Only it's made from alder pieces that I got for next to nothing years ago (I'm sure you'd appreciate that ;) My pieces were 3/4" thick though so my method was more the standard butcher block approach of spread lots of glue, place, repeat...... then clamp. No matter what method I've ever done though, lots of sanding is unavoidable. The trick is to limit sanding as much as attainable. Nice job. It always amazes me at how nice and durable of a table we can make all on our own for very little money and just some elbow grease.

Another well done project, Joe. You might need to set up a small fridge to keep the mugs, ginger beer and limes cool for the occasional Moscow Mule! Remember, time in the shop doesn't always have to be about work. I'll hang out in my barn to contemplate which project to attack next.

Joe, That's one heck of a good helper you have. If your concerned about condensation, look into a solar exhaust fan to take moisture out through the top pf the shop. I have containers and they work well at taking the heat out, don't know why they couldn't be utilized to remove moisture. Nice job on the counters and cabinets.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 6 лет назад
Thanks so much William!!... i like the idea of the exhaust, something I'll have to check into. As for right now I get pretty good air flow through the side doors and windows and the big end doors so I'm guessing if I crack them both a bit the cooler moisture will be mitigated pretty well. But with that said, I've only used it a short bit so I'll have to keep my eye on how things fair in the shop regarding the extra moisture. But I'm thinking it'll do nicely until we get our humid times during monsoon season :)

Having done this about 5 times I have found out the screws work against you. The Redi-rod pulls it very tight but if you have screws in the wood, those screws push against the wood trying to come together from the force of the rods. Be sure to use washers under the nuts to get more force. With as dry as it is there, you may not have the issues with the separation of the miters, especially if you use the evap unit as that will add a bit of moisture to the shop. As far as the container, they are built for sea use so you may be good there. :) I like your shop, good work.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 6 лет назад
Thanks! Will consider no screws for the next one.. but I really liked how it helped me line everything up. but I do think I'll add another rod or two if I do another... I think they are the real back up strength after the glue of course :)

@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 6 лет назад
Thanks Ryan! Good luck on your friends table! ... one thing I'd change if I did it again is that I think I'd add another rod. I think that will be a lot of your strength for the outdoor table... so even if it did crack, it wouldn't be able to open up much
@kevinoneill41
@kevinoneill41 2 года назад
Try using a small home paint roller to apply glue. After the foam is well saturated just just add more glue to the roller this I find is quicker and spreads more evenly. Using clamps will also distribute pursue throughout the top where needed most. I just happenen to have a floor sander, what short and level work it does and yes don't cut the ends off until you are happy with the level of the top. As the ends seem to get a little too much sanding and can taper off so watch for that as well as along the edges. Great job.

Arizona for 62 years and very familiar with evap coolers. Let's say a love/hate relationship. Love the cool moist air. Hate the upkeep and service life of the units. Portables, in particular, with no bleed valve will salt/calcium up in short order. I suppose running them with distilled water would solve that, but may not be practical. I finally gave up and just run a floor fan in my workshop. I assume you will be using rainwater, (pretty pure), so hope it works out for you. Thanks for sharing.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 6 лет назад
So far its been good but for sure they can be a pain. I think my water should be okay but making sure I have good air inlet and outlet flow will surely help it to perform for the long term ... but with that said I will not really know the total performance until I've used it for at least 6 months or so

Hahahaahhaha, I lost a sander basically the same and laughed so loud that I woke half the house. Been pondering a butchers block build for a while now, and your threaded rod method is the way forward. Have a ton of untreated oregan pine. Will send pictures. Great video Joe, enjoy the weekend.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 6 лет назад
lol... I had too much fun with that... I starting thinking of a track to see how fast that sander could go! Yes, definitely send pics... I do think the threaded rod is a really stout way to hold it all together... kind of like rebar... lots of extra tensile strength even if the glue ever failed. (but on that note... if I built it again, I would probably add another 1 or two rods in... this one had 3 but I think the more the better;)

Nice project, great getting your ‘helper’ involved too... as for the dog? I’ve been to Arizona (from the ‘WetCoast’ of Canada!) and with that dry heat, I’d be laying right beside her!!! An inexpensive solution if you do find that condensation is a problem would be to use a de-humidistat to control an exhaust fan (common in new home construction up here) set it for around 40% and let the fan go. Just be ensure that you have some air intake (screened) as well.

Consider using oils/oil blends (tung, boiled linseed, danish, etc) as a finish for real work surfaces like work benches since they penetrate very well. Varnishes coat with little penetration and can make the surface slippery. Keep up the great work.

I am a fan of linseed oil... I didn't even think about the slippery thing until you mentioned it and I just ran my hand across it and realized.. yes, much more slippery than I had thought. But after some work on it I'll have enough scratches to add a little roughness to it :)

Nice looking workbench top. Good proportions and very strong! My preference is to use glue only or with dowels, and have less buried metal in such a thing, to save ruining future drill bits or saw blades when I inevitably change it all around a half dozen times -- but I'm indecisive that way.... :) A reasonably-priced alternative to an expensive pipe clamp could be an off-cut of plywood with wooden blocks screwed to it, one of the blocks with an angled face toward the project, and hammering in a scrap wedge with a matching angle (a la Izzy Swan -- the man loves his homemade wedges). Wooden wedges can exert an amazing amount of clamping force.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 6 лет назад
lol... I'm totally with you on the indecisive thing.. i change things all the time regarding projects...lol but I do like the wedge thing... totally an Izzy Swan thing for sure... super smart all of his contractions!!! :)

Mix some sawdust in with wood glue then use a spreader to work it into any gaps in your joints, it works a treat and they are completely invisible after planing or sanding. Not my idea by the way, I saw it on a professional carpenter's YT channel once but can't remember which to provide you a link.

Nice work. It'll be just fine! I just have to comment on the evaporative cooler in a confined space. If it is not drawing fresh air and then ventilating to the outside then humidity will build up and prevent further evaporation thus rendering it ineffective.

Thanks DM! I'm using it mostly with both doors open as just spot cooling where I'm at in teh shop. so far no condensation build up... but I am planning to make a spot where it can store away from dust, etc,.

Great job you did here. Almost too valuable to work on. ;-) A cheap and good workbench top is also a kitchen worktop with CPL coating to use.

Great video! (As usual) :) Loved seeing your "assistant" practice her painting skills - guess she gets that from her Mom (knowing how much you dislike the task!) LOL Very nice looking bench top!!! (Your well-worn and comfy looking "Hat" reminds me of your Grandfather's Cowboy Hat...just the same well-worn and used hat he couldn't be without...it must be a "guy thing"! Love it!!

Olives grown, wow! Like this approach to holding the top together with threaded rod, nice and simple but crazy strong. Did Tys bench also use threaded rod? Would be surprised if the mitres open with the rods through them
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 6 лет назад
Yes, she has grown quite a bit...lol... this dog just wants to be with us... oh yes... and to kill every rat, mouse and rabbit she can find...and then set them by the door to 'show off'...lol as for Ty's bench... I'm not sure.. he just told me to be aware that might happen... hopefully it doesn't but I guess only time will tell

Any reason why you used screws between each board? Also, I hope you make that table higher--your back will be thankful. In any case, great job!
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 6 лет назад
haha... yes it will be just a bit higher.. that was basically the height of the saw horses. as for the screws... mostly to help line them up and keep them in place. I think they will add some extra support if I ever get any cracks to... at least I think so :)

2x4 bench tops are nice, but heavy as hell. A 8' x 3' flush exterior wood door is cheap and works like a charm for a bench top. And no dicking around gluing/sanding/cutting.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 6 лет назад
Yes, doors make really nice bench tops too... but this shop is narrow and I'd have to cut it down. This one took about 14, 2x3's in total ($2.15 a piece) so it wasn't terribly expensive. At more local HD/Lowes the doors are a bit more expensive than that... of course the glue, screws, rods and my time added a lot to the expense factor... lol So I guess in the end a door would have sufficed well.. but then it wouldn't have been as interesting of a video ;) Thanks for checking it out Arthur:)

Always thought I need a jointer/planer to do this. Yours turned out great! ....I'm set to tackle mine now. Thanks! BTW, what grit sandpaper did you use and how long did sanding take to complete?
@kevinoneill41
@kevinoneill41 2 года назад
There are a couple of jigs out there to use your table saw as into a joiner great little device for projects like this. For finer furniture projects a joiner is the only answer with a plainer. What luxury.

The bench top turned out nice, and I laughed at the poor sander injury. The workbench looks like it will give you lots of workspace while still being narrow enough to still make the shop feel spacious. Nice choice. What will you do with those laminated ends that you cut off? Cutting boards? Counter tops or something else for the playhouse? Also, I'm looking forward to hearing how the evap cooler works in the next several months. :)

And I'll try to focus on projects that may only take a day or two....lol....all these big projects are wearing me down ;)
