Your videos go so well with my cup of coffee in the morning Ash, even though I'm not that in to pens at all (I daily drive a simple Parker Jotter Steel and I bought my wife a Fisher SpacePen bullet in a nice violet color). Good video. Have been a Lamy Safari user for decades. First introduced to them because they do a left handed nib (slightly left oblique) in their standard range. So long as I clean them occasionally (couple of times a year) they are utterly reliable. Haven’t tried the Al Star but you’ve given me a perfect excuse to give one a go!

Ah, good old Lamy. Serving german school children for generations - and never let us down. What better testimonial for the quality of a product than surviving years and years of abuse by kids from 6 to 16? The design, however, is restrained and timeless enough to look appropriate for seasoned users as well. Great review!

I use I a sheaffer, that I bought secondhand. I had to clean it out to get the ink flowing, but it now writes perfectly.

Lovely item, Ash - I have used the Lamy Safari for nearly 10 years and have an Al-Star SE from 2019, both very well made and highly reliable. I have an unfounded belief that they make my handwriting neater... I was interested to hear that you use Turquoise ink for your signatures - I use green and violet in two of my pens for security and a bit of personal style! (spelling mistakes corrected 1/11/21!)

Ash, could you please consider recording a video of your notebook uses? I'm always interested in how people use notebooks - for what purposes, what styles and paper they favour, what notetaking tips they have, etc. Many thanks for another great video; I've just bought an Al-Star as a result of this :)

Indeed another fine video I greatly appreciate this one in particular because I enjoy writing with fountain pens and do indeed have a small collection of my own however I have yet to purchase a Lamy fountain pen but after seeing your excellent video I will look into buying one thanks again for all the helpful information! #stylishgentsoversixty

Ash, quick question: I can't figure out how to make my fountain pen ink flow properly. It keeps coming in and out, and I have to draw over my letters. Do you have any advice?

I would recommend flushing out the pen, as old ink may have solidified within the feeder unit causing interruptions to the flow.I usually soak my pens in warm water for an hour then run through with warm water to break up any deposits. Allow to dry naturally and re-ink. Should work!

I have always wanted to try a fountain pen but didn’t know where to start. This looks perfect for me and be from the United States I even know the proper way to pronounce aluminum. Just joking there. Thank you for the excellent video.

My first Al-Star is on its way- the ocean blue. I decided to go ahead and dive headfirst down the rabbit hole, as you said, by ordering a couple bottles of ink from different manufacturers. I fear there is no help for me.

@@TheChapsGuide I took your advice and am looking forward to the swipe arriving this week. In all honesty my Al-star is stuck in shipping somewhere so I am ordering from goulet with 2-day shipping. The fact that the swipe comes with 2 converters makes it a very appealing choice since I have inks sitting on my desk.

Love your jacket. Where did you get that? I haven’t tried Lamy pens. I don’t love their style. I like the pilot metropolitan and the twsbi eco, but that one can’t use cartridges, which I know you prefer. I like to fill my own pens and the eco holds an enormous amount of ink and writes like a star.

It’s a Crombie. Worn once by previous owner, £24. One of my better bargains. I’ve moved on to a TWSBI Swipe of late and I’m veering towards non proprietary inks. I’ve fuelled my Swipe with Petrol Blue (Mont Blanc) it’s a winner!

I really like the way fountain pens look and the way they write. It's a shame at least here in the states that cursive writing is not taught. I'm afraid that it's going to be a thing of the past. Have a great day cheers Ron

I'm from the US and I was taught cursive in elementary school. How else is someone supposed to have a unique signature? I still write in cursive for personal writing, though I still write in print when others have to read it for fear that they won't be able to read my handwriting. Have many school districts given up on teaching cursive?

@@ronaldpoppe3774 I am continually astonished that I apparently received a well above average education. If our youth is graduating high school less knowledgeable than I was, than we're all in serious trouble.
