Lamy Safari vs AL-star Fountain Pen Comparison 

I upgraded my black safari with a converter to use black Mont Blanc ink. To add a special touch I ordered a replacement gold nib for a Lamy Dialog CC directly via the company home page (contacted them if this is possible to fit the Safari). Works great and if I leave it on the desk, nobody else cares about it ;).

Per primo: Thank you for showing this. Per secundo: I swappad the front piece of the Safari rollerball with the Safari fountain pen. By doing this, I got some more dark lilac fountain pens. The things that differed from a real one was the lack of ink windows, the front piece in another color and that is a - in the hood instead of a +. The lack of unk windows in the rollerball body makes it a great eyedtopper. Per terzio: My first Safari, bought in 1986 (dark red with black nib and clip) got a crack in the hood in 2021. I wrote to Lamy and asked for the life span of a Safari. They were so impressed over almost 35 years of nearly daily use, that they sent me a new pen! That's quality and service! One possible explanation on the crack, is not misuse. It"s more liked that it was used/stored in direct sunlight too much. And of course, it was inked several times. Hi i have 2 al stars but one of theirs mechanism inside is broken while cleaning. So im thinking, maybe i can buy the safari then combine its outer shell with all star. İnside safari/outside al star. Do you think that will work?

I initially bought the LX with the black nib and didn't like the way it wrote so I returned it. Later I bought the Safari with the standard nib and it was MUCH smoother and wrote very well and I fell in love with it totally .. it was like a big difference. I also love the glossy red of the Safari which is so cool for a fountain pen and looks like an expensive pen as it is big and red like the Parker big red expensive pens. Great deal on the Safari and its a steal imo. Also the one solid colour just looks so much better than that smoky nib on the AL which is not inspiring .. when you buy a pen for its colour you are looking at the nib and section when writing so imo the Safari is much better as you can enjoy the colour of the pen while writing immensely. I am now looking for cool Safari colours! Nice video, loved it.

I just got my lamy studio in the imperial blue and I love it .. i got the ef but im left handed and I wanna try a broader nib to see how smoother it is .. i have a medium cp1 that I can swap out so im thinking about ordering a broad or stub nib... i work in an office where the paper is standard copy paper so im wondering if i can use a broad or stub nib on that paper

Imo, the plastic safari feels better in hand. The AL star feels too light for what it looks like. It looks great tho

The LAMY Al-star has a slightly bigger cap than the safari (also the barrel) but they use the exact same clip and for this exact reason the clip sits at a slightly different angle on the two pens. This means that you can leave your safari on the table with the clip facing down and it will stay perfectly in balance. The Al-star will just refuse to sit on its clip. Also, pretty important to note that on the safari the O-ring is glued to the grip section, while on the Al-star it's glued on the end of the barrel. That's why you can't mix and match the barrels that well. Al-star and Lx are 2 different models (although very similar). It's a bit confusing when you use both names for the same product. Perhaps the only difference between the 2 is the nib? I don't know since I don't own the Lx. I prefer the safari because it's thinner, lighter, you can leave it sitting on its clip and the texture of the plastic is so great that I can't stop rubbing it between my fingers. If anyone wishes to jump in on LAMY's iconic safari-like design I definitely recommend the original plastic safari.
