also while Lana does seem to portray herself with all the glamour and the riches, according to her growing up her parents were lower middle class. She also was living in a trailer park during her lizzy grant days when she was trying to break into the industry while being a waitress. Its actually interesting you said that cause she recently this past week has been on instagram on her honeymoon account pushing back against the comments and narrative that she grew up wealthy. I know I used to think so based off information in the media given to us in 2012 but she is telling her fans that its false.

I had no idea! Someone else had told me that a few weeks ago but it's not what i expected because of her lyrics! Certainly good to know. It's crazy because now there's a whole another way I am interpreting the music😱

@@toolertotmusicbox I actually have friends who knew Lana back in the day (we're from the same part of upstate NY) and yeah she was middle class. I wouldn't say lower, but middle class. She did date some really wealthy guys while she was living in NYC though, like Wall Street, investment banker types. I think that's where the inspiration for National Anthem came from. I don't think it's as much about young girl with an old man as it is this middle class girl trying to fit in with this upper class lifestyle she's unfamiliar with. "He says to be cool but I don't know how yet" isn't because she's so young, it's because she's not used to all the things that he's introducing her to. Like imagine a rich guy suddenly taking you to the hamptons, out on limo and helicopter rides, to all these super fancy places. He tells you to be cool about it but it's hard when all that stuff is so new to you.

I've been listening to Lana since this album debuted! She has older stuff that you should check out sometime so you can hear the Lana before Lana!

I definitely want to get some headphones! I do have airpods✨I'm hoping in December to get some big headphones when I travel back to the U.S.😌 I also want to get an external mic once the channel grows more for better audio! Also genuinely am a little confused how to have external audio & me hear the audio through headphones at the same time🤣 Been learning though🤗 Thanks so much for watching my reactions and your support🥰

Off to the Races - Rikers Island is in the East River in NYC and is where the local jail is for anyone picked up by NYPD. Also, I never thought about Lana’s choice to sing in a high pitched voice as a way to convey how much younger she is than this man, but you might be onto something as the song is partially inspired by the Nabakov novel Lolita. Dark Paradise - she’s never confirmed who this song is about, but it’s commonly believed to either be about 1) a lover who was sent to prison for 30 years for running some sort of illegal software company (the same man in Million Dollar Man and possibly Blue Jeans), which makes some of the lyrics to Dark Paradise metaphorical or 2) a lover who actually died, with evidence from other songs pointing to a drug overdose (most likely heroin/opiates) making the lyrics to Dark Paradise more literal. This is What Makes Us Girls - Lana grew up in Lake Placid, NY (current population = 2205) and after developing a pretty serious problem with alcohol at a young age, she was sent away to boarding school in Connecticut when she was 14 (which is one of the reasons people incorrectly assume she came from money) Side note - she sings a bit about what her life was like after being sent away in a song called Boarding School, which is part of an extensive catalog of unreleased tracks that have never made it onto any albums. You can find it on RU-vid (and possibly SoundCloud too). Up until just a few weeks ago, there was actually a website called the Miss Daytona Collection that had hundreds of mp3 files for all of the known unreleased songs, demo versions of a lot of the album songs, and also the really early stuff she put out under the names May Jailer and Lizzy Grant. I feel so relieved that I downloaded all those files before it got taken down. You should definitely check out the extra tracks from the bonus tracks version of this album and from the Paradise edition. That would be 13 songs total - 4 bonus tracks and 9 from Paradise.

I read all of this! Thanks for all the information about these tracks🥰 I really felt like there is a connection to being young and dating older men with the way she sings in off to the races! Also the info you said on dark paradise woah! That's wild😱. I certainly want to react to bonus tracks and paradise edition🥰

@@toolertotmusicbox I’m glad that you found some value in the original comment and I can’t wait for the next Lana video! And yea, she’s constantly singing about older men in her songs, so I’m sure she’s put a lot of thought into different ways to explore that theme lyrically and musically. There are also references to Lolita scattered all over various songs, which she says is her favorite book after having been introduced to it by her favorite teacher at boarding school. I read an interview where she talked about meeting him when she was 15 and he was 22 and fresh out of college (to teach at private schools, a graduate degree is not a requirement). The students were allowed to leave campus on the weekends, so he would take her on long drives around the New England countryside where they’d talk about music and literature. She credits him with turning her on to Nabokov, Whitman, and Ginsburg as well as Tupac and Biggie. I don’t think she’s ever commented on it, but I’ve always assumed their relationship went far beyond what is appropriate for teachers and students - I had sex with one of my teachers when I was 16, so I know that my perspective might be warped and maybe I read too much into it, but the vibe feels similar to me. Also, the first verse of that song Boarding School that I mentioned starts with her singing ‘Let’s do drugs and make love with our teachers,’ so take what you will from those lyrics and draw your own conclusions.
