Cultural Liaison Anela Evans expands upon how simply looking at a photograph of Lana'i will never compare to seeing its beauty with your own eyes.
Evans was raised on Lana'i and grew up loving hula and hunting deer. She rode horses on Koele Ranch but also started driving on Lana'i's dirt roads at 12 years old. During these holoholo (travels) from the white sands of Polihua Beach to the rocky landscape of Keahiakawelo, her father would tell her stories of the legends of the small island.
Even for Hawai'i's locals, not much is known about Lana'i except for its Four Seasons Resort and historical pineapple plantations. However, Evans wants to change that. She wants locals and visitors to ike maka, or “see with one’s own eyes” the Lana'i that she knows and loves. When asked what makes Lana'i so special, she says Lana'i is different from other islands because of its untouched beauty. The entire island is off the beaten path and often feels like you have stepped back in time as its beauty has been preserved for hundreds of years.
In both her professional life and personal life, she feels it’s her responsibility to preserve and perpetuate the culture and the essence of Lana'i.

I wish I found this channel and video sooner. I’m from lanai and lived my childhood there. It pains me to be so far away from my home now, but it’s so wonderful to know that people care about the land and want to spread the word about its beauty 🤙

Did 183 bodies recently wash up on shore of Lana’i? It is so sad what happened on Maui.
