Mahalo Lanakila! You explained to me, a Spiritual non-Hawaiian, how the Hawaiians saw Mauna Kea as sacred, the watershed source, the reason for the protest by the Protectors, and everything I believe in. A lot of this info, like the caring for the forests, the aina was also written in a book called the Celestine Prophecy, so I see it all coming true. Mahalo for this and am waiting for part II.

We gotta realize too that the first few people to ever hike the mauna became kings and Alii. Kamehameha was said to see his vision of uniting/conquering all the hawaiian islands atop mauna kea where all the other islands can be seen on a clear day.

Thank you, Lanakila. Your soul shines through and I appreciate your dedication. It’s difficult for most Westerners to think of a place in nature as sacred. (Even though it is the Tenth Commandment* that an altar should be made of unhewn stone-i.e., completely natural and untouched by human hands.) Back in 1967, I went to Arizona to live with the Hopi Indians for a month. I believed there was something I needed to learn from these people who lived so close to the land. I did learn a great deal from them, but there was also something they needed from me. They wanted my help, as a journalist, to bring their message to the American people, to protect their sacred Black Mesa from being mined by Peabody Coal Company. They went to the United Nations asking for help, but no one could stop the Peabody Coal Company from digging out their most sacred mountain-presumably because Americans desperately needed coal to heat their houses. This story is a very old one. As I said, It’s difficult for most Westerners to think of a place in nature as sacred. When the Greeks and the Medieval Church established a separation between body and spirit, they also separated nature from spirit. This was not true of the earlier Celtic religion, for example, where specific trees and groves were considered sacred. In order to put Mauna Kea in perspective, just think about what would happen if some powerful company decided to put a huge telescope in the middle of the Vatican, just because they determined that that was the best vantage point to view the stars. Christians would lay down their very bodies to prevent such a desecration. There would be rage as well as peaceful protest. Christians would do anything to prevent it - including acts of violence, in the name of defending what is sacred to them. Similarly, think of how environmentalists would rally if Mauna Kea was the primary nesting place of some rare and beautiful bird. There would be a massive outcry of protest all over the world! Indigenous people are just as endangered as animal species. Yet there are very few organizations designed to protect them. And the greatest threat to their existence is the dishonoring and desecration of their spiritual places and their spiritual values (including forcing their children into missionary schools and public schools where their values and their languages are often maligned). Hawaiian youth have the greatest incidence of thinking about committing suicide-and one of the highest rates of actually committing suicide-as any in the entire country. Whatever we can do to restore their innate sense of self-worth and self-value will help to remedy that situation. This does not mean sending them to universities to become scientists (though some may want to do that). Disregarding what is sacred to their people is simply not acceptable. We begin by restoring the Sacred Places. Once that vibrational frequency is in place, it will strengthen all of the Original People. It will cause a shift toward the Aina, toward true protection of the deepest values, including truly living in balance with Nature. From there, all that must happen will occur. Mauna Kea IS the tallest mountain in the world. Whatever occurs here can be heard throughout the Universe. *“An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me . . . And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.” Exodus 20-26

I think of long time Hawaiian friends over the years, who have been so generous and welcoming and have taught me much about the Hawaiian culture, and I think of the many ways that the land in Hawaii has soothed, refreshed and comforted me. I understand from my own experience, Aloha ‘Aina, Love of the Land. It is a reciprocal relationship. @lilykoihawaii
@lilykoihawaii 5 лет назад
Nothing wrong with glasses, which harmlessly rest on a face and can be easily removed. TMT requires blowing up 8 acres of Grandmother's face with dynamite and - like the other telescopes that have spilled 100+ liters of coolant, ethylene glycol, mercury, and diesel fuel - risks poisoning Grandma.. And it makes a lot more sense to take care of the Earth we have than pretend it's viable to colonize other planets not perfectly designed to support human life.
@aljawisa
@aljawisa 5 лет назад
@@lilykoihawaii It's just analogy. The rock feels nothing. It's just some idol to these people. Productive land is far more valuable, which requires a build up and a break down of material. At some point this Island will become an atol and a home for coral reefs, and even that will sink into the ocean. In the meantime before it wears down to productive land, you might as well use it for something uniquely beneficial other than treating it like some useless giant idol.

@sunnysied713
@sunnysied713 Год назад
@@mandykehau Real talk. Back in the day (I mean way back to the late 17th century), all of Maunakea was considered 'sacred' and had many wahi pana. Now, less than 1% of Hawaiians practice the old ancestral religion. There's culturally and spiritually no modern basis to put kapu on Maunakea. Also, kapu is dead. The Mo'i got rid of the old religion and kapu in 1819. Historically, there were different sacred levels, lower to higher, as you ascend the mauna. The Mauna Kea Adze Quarry reaches up to 12,000 ft. It's full of many religious artifacts (heiau, ahu, etc). The kupuna diligently and methodically quarried the basalt rock and extensively damaged the 'sacred' mauna. Lake Waiau exists at 13,000 ft. And TMT will be constructed at 13,200 ft, which is 600 ft in elevation below and 1 mile walking distance away from the holy summit (the most sensitive religious site). The TMT chose a location far from the holy summit. Archaeological surveys verified that the build site is free of cultural artifacts and its not used for any religious (and other) practice (as mentioned earlier). That's a great compromise. Meanwhile, protesters don't want any scopes on the mauna. They even opposed the idea of moving the Hoku Kea observatory from the summit region to Hale Pohaku (9,300 ft), which is at a much lower elevation (that was embarrassing for the kia'i). Sorry, but the protesters use 'sacredness' as a false defense because their ancestors used 'sacred' land to their benefit and in a detrimental way. They definitely could've chose not to wage war with neighboring islands (separated by many miles of ocean) AND they could've chose not to over-harvest the āina for trade wealth. They chose differently. The Mauna has experienced over-harvesting of sandalwood, over-harvesting of wood for Hawaiian warfare, extensive quarrying of rock for stone tools and weapons, sanctioned and large scale cattle ranching, etc. The 'sacred' Mauna has been used for MANY pragmatic reasons. Astronomy is no different. Protestors pretend that Maunakea is 'sacred', but it's just for political theater. The Hawaiian Volcanic Observatory sits on the outer rim of the Kilauea Caldera, another 'sacred' Mauna, but the kia'i don't mind. No one wants to die a fiery lava death. Astronomers help protect the Earth from cosmic disasters, such as solar storms and near earth objective. There's plenty of room on the Mauna for Science and People to Coexist. 🏔️💪

This gives us the feeling of rape.. We keep saying noooooo.. They keep doing. How does it feel to know.. That all we have been saying is true? Hawaiians have no say in any part of our home?... Does that make any sense?? Our home was taken. I want to talk to my people.. But you have many of our best on the mauna.. Representing many of us.. We've won this many times.. Our losses can be seen... Limiting telescopes.. Is not fair either. Just stop now.. You have taken down our keikis schools.. They were modest.. And placed where our representatives felt ok. Now someone has to bus keiki to a place.. This is serious business.. They still trying to break our hope. Our best is there.. They need our support... What to do?? 1 Fasting... Give up something u enjoy for a week.. Pray for God's will be done. Pray for guidance, kindness and protection. For freedom.. To be heard and truly taken into consideration. I Mahalo Jesus. 2 Stand together again in petition for meeting with UN. 3k is a lot. 10k should be enough. Tell the UN to stand by us.. And protect us.. While we make our way through.. Or maintain their status as one of those who hindered us.

Nicely done video. Everyone have good points. Hawaiians brutally fought each other forever until Kahmehameha finally defeated almost all the Islands in 1795. Not that long ago. The remaining two Islands joined him a few years later 1800's. Was it OK for Kamehameha to do what he did? It was bloody ugly burtal. Does that make it right? Albert Einstein said " there will never be peace on earth so long as man is here." Maybe he was right.

This is the result of why they banned speaking Hawaiian back then. To allow you to articulate your manao in English so everyone could understand what the hell you are talking about. Imagine giving your speech in Hawaiian, the mass population you want to reach will tune you out. You may lose the ability to speak your native tongue but that should not hinder your ability to comprehend it.

the whole world is sacred, the telescope will be built and life will move on with or without those who are stubborn to accept change. nobody is "native " to the island , everyone came by boat just that some came here before others, and to say we were here first so our ways are better sounds like something i heard a child say on the playground. I got nothing against people from other cultures but sometimes the logic doesnt work to the best as they would like to. If the mountain doesnt want it there it will take it down. Nobody speaks for a mountain. And how is one telescope gona ruin water? Is it nuclear? his perspective is interesting but not enough to convince ohers just because THEY dont want it there

Well "epic", you obviously don't belong anywhere which is why you have no connection to the land and don't understand that where ever people are raised, it is their obligation to preserve that land! Not to allow others to desecrate and destroy what they have no appreciation for. It's not a simple "telescope" like a simple mind might imagine...these people must drill so deep into the mountain to erect something that massive! Destruction of the aina will happen if we don't protect it! Look at how the rest of our islands have deteriorated!

It seems these kanakas care more about our Aina than our Keiki, cause where are ALL these so called leaders when we March for the Keiki who are being sex trafficked? No where to be found & silent? Begs the question if their being paid off & TRULY what their intentions are? I mean the Aina is important but our Keiki are the future & sex trafficking is a global issue!

Will this guy ever shut up? He is only participating in this to get his 15min of fame.

Maybe to your colonialist, arrogant eyes... you think Lanakila and other's lives are about getting the 15 minutes of fame that American imperialist culture promotes as the goal of life. Thats not what Kanaka Maoli culture believes in. Hope you see that what people like Lanakila do is deeply about family, community, and tribe--restoring justice. Far from the selfishness, greedyness, insecurity that American 15-minute-of-fame culture thrives on.

nosefalltree - Colonialist? Sorry to break it to you, but I'm actually Hawaiian. The difference is that I'm a Hawaiian who isn't a cultural extremist, trying to portray our people as victims and holding us back. People like Lanakila hold our people back because they live in a fantasy world.

ancona mariah - evil science? You mean like the science that proved that marijuana is beneficial for various diseases? You should just stop talking now. Actually, keep talking, as you are a shining example as to why people don't take the anti-TMT advocates seriously.
