I owned this Zagato for twenty years and it only left me on the side of the road twice. I'd consider that pretty reliable vs. many other classic sports cars from that era. Beauty is of course in the eyes of the beholder, and I always loved its looks. Now I also love the Fulvia too. It's such a tiny little Coupe, and it looks great. Lancia is very innovative in terms of both their engineering, and their styling. Viva Lancia! DrivinIvan

I own / owned two of these : a 1976 1600 in the UK / Germany, now a 1979 2000 here in the USA. With a little TLC, much patience and a trusty supplier for spares, a wonderful car to drive!

My 1981 Brochure (for 1982) had the Zagato handling quote by Jody Schechter

Mine was 79 blk/gold stripe and I wasn’t happy at all. The car had to be wrenching by me or had to have it repaired by Tony at Highland Park Italian car service in So. Cal to keep it going. The parts were almost non existent even back in 80’s. I was so disgusted I gave away my Zagato to Tony. What a relief!!

Sounds like you had a limited edition Zagato of which they made about 500 as I remember. They certainly could be tough to own sometimes, that's for sure! That's true of a lot of great Italian cars though! Thanks for watching and commenting and please Like, Subscribe & Share. Here's my current Lancia, the Delta Integrale! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-W11H0Fr-V0U.htmlsi=XmFqOyG5f15OPObg Drivin' Ivan

Restoring a red '82! Fun car to drive. Soft ride. Good power up hills. Suspension is good on rough roads. Amazing brakes, etc.

Currently restoring a complete 1979 lancia zagato , less then 1% rust , thankfully car was given complete Ziebart rust proofing from the dealer in 1979 . Owned over 25 cars in my life so far , but simply love the simplicity of design in this car . Looking forward to drive this car , but will not rush the tlc of the restoration .

They are great sports cars that benefit from being both exotic, and quite affordable to own! They are also surprisingly fun to drive too!

where did you originally buy this car and any chance you bought it from Cleveland?
@drivinivan

Peter Kusner Never in Cleveland. The car was bought by a guy in New Orleans. He took off the bumpers and added yellow headlights. Looks good. I think he may have sold it recently.

I know this is an old video but I was wondering if you knew how many 1981 special editions were made? There is one in my area for a very low price and was wondering if I should buy. Thanks.
@drivinivan

I think they made about 500 of the black and gold special edition.

They made more Black and Gold SEs than any other color for North America. It was the least special color combination in terms of availability. They came in Red, White, Metallic Blue, Metallic Silver and the Black and Gold Special Edition. I probably sold more new Lancia Scorpions and Zagatos than anyone else in North America. In the end of their stay in North America, Lancia (Fiat) bought back all the cars their dealers could not retail and sold them to a company called Consolidated International out of Columbus , Ohio and they in turn wholesaled the cars at about half of normal invoice to Fiat/Lancia dealers who could retail them. Dealers where paying less for a new, loaded (leather, power windows, air conditioning) 1976/77 Scorpion than a base 1978 Fiat 124 Spider. The Spider had a retail price around $8,000 or you could buy a 1 or 2 year old but technically still new Scorpion with a suggested retail price of over $11,000 and the same new car warranty for about $8,800...and the dealers were making about $3,700 a car at that price...nearly twice the profit made by selling the Spider. We could have sold them for less than the Spider and still made more money but didn't have too...I'm gonna tell you that I personally sold 50+ Zagatos and 80+ Scorpions out of about 2,200 +/- Zagatos and 1,806 Scorpions that where brought to N.A. Those were the days...

My late father was a real car nut, & I still have fond childhood memories of Saturday afternoon test-drives in Porsches, Lancias, Triumphs, etc., etc. Always felt bad that these got such a lousy rap, at least here in the U.S. As I understand it, the rust & electronics were indeed a problem, but the engines were fundamentally very strong. A beautiful & underappreciated classic.
