*Edit* I was using the term "big cats" loosely in this video for sizing. However, as a viewer pointed out, bobcats are not classified scientifically as a big cat.
As an animal and predator connoisseur myself, I consider the true big cats start with the ones of the Panthera genius that are lions, tigers, leopards, and jaguars with snow leopards, being unique in that category; and cheetahs and mountain lions fall behind that, because of their sheer size. The Panthera cat family are distinguished by their iconic size, and ability to roar; while mountain lions roar meow, and are capable of purring. There’s an interesting video that lists and categorizes most of the world’s wildcats from the Panthera family, to the smaller African and European wildcats that pet cats are related to.
I grew up in the coastal mountains of southern California and had many pets. One day I saw an injured bobcat by the side of the road and removed my jacket, wrapped the cat up and brought him home. my dad worked in a hospital emergency room and loved animals. He dampened a clean rag in ether and held it near the bobcats face until it relaxed then carefully felt for broken bones or internal injuries and found nothing obvious. he wrapped the chest and stomach gently with gaze and taped it and put it in our workshop with a dish of water and raw fish. We fed it raw chicken or fish twice a day for 6 weeks and anestetised it again to remove the wrap and left the workshop door open. He left but in the wintertime he would return for free food and seemed to have a mild arthritus in one rear leg; Sometimes he would let us pet him but other times he would growl if we approached. We always respected his wishes and he came around for many years and got along with our cats.
I once had a cross breed, bobcat and Maine coon, he looked like a Maine coon and sounded like a bobcat, he was the sweetest boy ever, he was 3 months old when his momma a stray that I feed died, I had him with me for 14+ years miss him he was highly intelligent as well as such a cuddle bud😢
I’m a bobcat therian and was just like “how do I not know alot about bobcats “ I’ve been meaning to look up bobcat documentary’s and this helped very much!
We had bobcats at our office building in Irving TX. They would come up from the ravine nearby and hide in the pampas grass. Very interesting video, love the detailed information provided.
They sure are elusive creatures. In my 66 years, i have only seen one bobcat in the wild. It was more than 40 years ago and he was in the driveway of my dad's old saw mill in Goshen, Massachusetts. He was a big healthy looking cat. We gazed into each others eyes for a bit, and eventually he went on his way across the driveway, leaped over a stone wall and off into the woods. I would bet the farm that they have seen me in the woods many more times than i have seen them. I would love to see another one. One of these days, maybe i will put up a few trail cams for the fun of it.
I've been lucky enough to see them a few times here in North Texas/Oklahoma! I've also picked one up on a trail cam, so it is definitely worth trying. 🐾
I live in a wooded area of rural Central Massachusetts. One morning at the edge of the wood near my house was a longer tailed cat. A week later in the same area was another cat with a bobbed tail. Most likely a Bobcat pair. What surprised me the most was it's 'stare'. A bit unnerving. I now warily exit my house these days in the early dark mornings. Thanks for this video.
We live in a wooded area and have deer, black bears, and other critters that wander through the backyard. It can be startling to see a big black bear sitting in your yard but we have learned to watch out for them during certain times of year. An air horn is usually enough to scare a black bear off. A few days ago I went out the backdoor to do a few chores when I heard a very loud hiss. I have never heard anything like that. It was almost as though the cat had a microphone it was so loud. When I moved again it hissed again. My two house cats were sitting out there and I didn’t want to leave them alone but could not convince them to come inside. This time of year there are tall wild flowers growing along the tree line so I could not see what was back there. Whatever it was went away but now a I am concerned about my cats and our other animals. Bears get into garbage and animal feed. The deer just much whatever tastes good to them. I’m a bit more concerned about having a Bobcat around. I have heard that there are cougars around here but the Animal Management people insist that there are not, however, some very reputable people claim to have seen them. I just tell myself that it has to be a Bobcat. A bigger cat just would be too much trouble for everyone. I hope it was just passing through.
Populations are highest in the southwest, as high as 20 per square mile. Southern cats are smaller than northern cats, only 10 to 20 pounds. Northern cats can grow to 40 pounds. Mice, rats, rabbits are in danger from bobcats, not people. They pose no threat to people. Bobcats will do their best to avoid humans. We are not a prey species. If you see one, just enjoy watching it.
We live in Tucson’s foothills…and have a bobcat family here often. The Mom and 2 babies often sat on the hill behind our house. Our dog once “treed” one of them which ended up jumping to the top of a 30’ saguaro cactus and just sat up there til our pup came inside. Last week, we came home in the middle of the day and found an adult bobcat sleeping on the back patio…he was laying right next to our sliding glass doors to the master bedroom. We see them all the time here.
While bobcat "spray" like other felines, excites dogs and seems to terrify feral house cats, I have never come across bobcat scat. I have encountered bobcat 2x in my life and heard stories of encounters. Interesting animals.
I have seen bobcats about 5 times in my life in nw and central ct,but 4 days ago I had to pull a dead one out of the road that just got hit by a car in bristol ct. He or she was still warm. Magnificent cat.people are so callous, they were just driving around it like it was litter.
Had one for 11 years in small apartment in central Russia. Found him in woods while was skiing thinking it was an old abandoned cat with chopped tail, no teeth and eye infection 😢 Just a couple of weeks later realized that “old” cat was not dying, but growing instead. His beautiful eyes opened , teeth grew, and dark “polka dots “ appeared on his stomach. The entire apartment building lived my giant cat Konstantine for almost a decade. (Even though he never used steps to go outside to use bathroom- he was jumping from the 3rd floor window making sure he was not going to land on someone’s head😂) Never was aggressive to any humans, played with dogs and cars, but hunted squirrels, rats and mouse. Well, I had to feed him with raw meat at least once a day. He loved water melons also😂
That’s an awesome story! It was kind of you take it in. I love when I hear about good encounters like this. Of course I wouldn’t recommend that anyone take in a wild animal that doesn’t have experience with them, but when you hear positive examples it can be heartwarming ❤️
I am curious about stories that pair Bobcat and Coyote! Did you see what tribes, or which stories had these two as counterparts? I would love to study this!
I some times hear a bobcat at night 🌃 😊 and some times they are close then they aren't most mountain are usually 2OO LBS all that I have heard of they pour good much better than a house cat 😊😊 OMG 8 2O 2O23
This plopumentary provided an interesting scatological analanulis of bobcat sign. My Bobcat spirit guide has taught me that life is, in essence, all just about the poo. 🤣
Tracked a wolf in alpena, mi, well, read the tracks as neighbor built next door and sand wad laid. And around a wild shrun were tracks made for an ambush hunt.
Hello aunt Mary I always had Distant memories As a kid of uncle Dinny teasing me about the not only existence of Bobcats but the large populations in Northern America often being confused with the Lynx. Populations of them have grown now Sharing the role of Apex predator along with black bears sometimes brown bears but very few all though I've seen stats for Kodiaks and Grizzly being a little bit more promising
The fattest cat I’ve seen in my life was stalking me the other night. And yeah he was in the open 20 foot from me and my kitten. I saw his ears first and thought it was a coyote [oh nah I walked his ass down all the while having chills he was not afraid and he even came back watching till that 357 popped off] he had the nerve to stop and look back. He was fat but not so fat he couldn’t get stomped out. He was watching my kitten lol I posted a short of us flanking each other. Edit wait you telling me it didn’t wunna eat my kitten? What he wunna play? lol
I live in the suburbs of a large city. We have a wooded area behind my house. There are bobcats around. I rarely see them, but you can definitely hear them at night. Sometimes they sound like screaming old women. Other times they sound like some demon from hell!
No coyote one on one is doing a darn thing to a Bobcat except get out of his way and no wolf one on one is doing anything with a lynx and an eagle will be their chicken sandwich!!
Dunno what the distrobution of bob cats are.......but many moons ago, as a child, I went on cycling / camping holiday in France and we were camping in some random field......got up earlyish - around 6 am and I saw large stocky cat......around the size and build of a bobcat. It was just a fleeting glimpse. But Ive always wondered what I saw.
Bobcats are native to the Americas and are pretty much all over North America and Mexico. Since you saw one in France, it's likely you saw a Eurasian or Iberian Lynx, bigger relatives of the Bobcat.
@@oofmaster4312 Thank you for the reply. Interesting to know what I most likely saw. Certainly WAY bigger than a domesticated cat and had that wild look to it.
One of my favorite predators to hunt. Meat is delicious and very similar in taste to pork but much leaner and more healthy. I'm lucky to live in AZ where we have a very high and strong population. Great video
The two most likely would avoid each other since it would be a fight to the death. However, I would say that the dog would win because of the size and the power of its jaw.
That wildcat would win every time plus bobcat has claws and can move around. Where I live a 40 pound bobcat took out to pitts in same backyard like they were nothing
Bobcats are a NOT classed as a bigcat as this video said ,as a bigcat is defined by it's ability to roar. Only lions,Tigers, leopards and Jaguars are classed as big cats
NOT "Canadian" Lynx, Goose or Bacon. CANADA Lynx. CANADA Goose. BACK Bacon. Cougar/Puma/Mountain Lion = all the same animal. Regional names, depending on where you're from.
