That is an awesome setup - simplicity of how everything fits together makes it really useable day-to-day. Many of the custom-outfitters tend to go overboard on adding bits and pieces which are either not needed, add weight or go wrong - yours seems very well thought out.

Thanks John. Yes, I did have 3 years of putting it all together so didn't rush anything. Once I returned home, I unbolted and removed the bed platform and it was basically back to a daily driver.

Nice Defender. I've got an ex-ADF Perentie fitted out quite similarly, but there are always new ideas and improvements in the pipeline. We've made several shakeout cruises, in preparation for a trip from Parkes NSW (home), through the centre to the Murchison WA. Thanks for a great video and see you on the road. Erik & Michelle

Pressure gauge my be connected up the wrong way round. Hence pressure going up not down but it still let you know and saved your motor. Enjoyed watching the whole series. Good job.

Great Vids Brett. I too have a 200tdi defender that I am setting up for expedition travel. First things will be to try and get the cab a little quieter so I can hear my wife. I think I will go the dynamat option too!

Great video & an excellent setup on your Defender. However your turbo boost gauge is far from useless, especially when ya'll also were insightful enough to install a pyro gauge. Not sure if they work in a Land Rover or not but you may want to consider a Scanguage II as well, extremely great gizmo for monoriting your diesel engine & fuel usage.

WEll done review glad to hear you did not have any real major problems... Nice that you could carry so much fuel in tanks, for my van their is no aftermarket tanks so had to go with jerry cans..

+Nomad Expedition Forums Thanks mate. At least with jerries you save a bunch on the initial price of a tank, plus can remove them when back in town. My secondary tank will just sit there unused now for most of its life... or till the next big trip.

I have been tossing the idea of a winch but even if I had one I still would not take any more chances than I do now without I do have a tug strap just in case I think I will stick with that idea..your thoughts since you did not really use your winch..

+Nomad Expedition Forums As a solo traveller I would still keep the winch just in case. I too don't go looking for hard stuff to try and get bogged in, usually seeking an alternative route if available. Also I am always mindful of my nearest recovery point, which are lacking in many desert areas. A hand winch is always a viable option if you have the space.

From memory my newly rebuilt turbo was flogged out but was picked up by a mechanic and replaced. Also my new reconditioned gearbox had the front main seal fail and lose a lot of gearbox oil. Got it fixed while in town. Also had 2 lower shock bushes fail in a week, but was able to have new ones flown in in a couple days. hey bret, just to let you know, the clip of the rear shock, the washers that hold in the bushes at the top are the wrong way round, the dome is supposed to face inwards to the bushes on both sides

Hey mate ! Awesome vids ! I keep looking them, started building my 90 defender expedition camper by taking you and your 110 as exemple ! I just noticed your compass on your dash, mine can't find north because of the metal structure, don't you have this problem ? did you do anything to make it work ? Thx for all the work you put in your vids !!

Thanks Chris. Enjoy your build! I have the same issue with my compass It's accurate to +/-15 degrees.. Plenty good enough to keep me heading in generally the right direction or when I hit a fork in a track. Always carry a handheld compass for more accurate work when needed.

G'day Brett, glad to see it's all going well. Just wondering how you installed those extra tie down points on the floor? Do they have backing plates on the underside? Keep up the good work!

+haydos21 Thanks. Yes they have backing washers or plates. The ones on at the rear door were installed with difficulty and a flexible arm. Had to get my arm underneath to put on the washers and nut. Probably took an hour for each nut! But worth it in the end.

Great video, though i disagree about the fixed water tank, I like it being handy for washing dishes etc at the back door and I just fill it using small containers. I haven't gone for as many engine management tools as I am driving in cooler climates. Did your rubbish bag on the back attract any unwanted wildlife? Keep up the great work !

My rubbish bag was undamaged but did attract a large dingo one night pouncing on my rear door, ( i wasn't about to go out and stop him either!) and one pesky fat possum who was determined to get inside, despite scaring him off a couple times. Yes gauges here I believe are a necessity with our extreme high temperatures.. so you're lucky that you could have saved a thousand and spent it travelling instead! Thanks. +Christof Fetscher Thanks mate. A 90 would be too small to carry the gear I did without a trailer. And I didn't want to be setting up a rooftop tent every night.. never know what the weather will be like. I also already owned my 110 and in Australia 90's are fairly rare.

Used a gopro for any on car shots and a nikon D3300. Also a canon video camera. I have a few gopro mounts fixed on the car and the rest I used the suction mount on the flat Defender body panels or glass to get the shot.

Hi, great videos! Can you talk a bit about your radio antenna setups on the all-aluminium Defender? How did you get a proper RF-grounding for the antennas? Or did you just rely on 1/2 wave antennas not really needing a grounding plate??

+claus dettelbacher The antenna is earthed to the chassis. This is the standard set up for Codan HF radios. Unfortunately I don't know much more about radios. Had no real issues with transmissions. Thanks

+claus dettelbacher The physical ground is still the RF ground for the antenna. The Vehicle acts like an inductive capacitor between the ground and the antenna.The low conductivity of the aluminum panels does not affect this as long as everything is properly bonded and electrically continuous on the body, Chassis , Engine , exhaust etc. A good earth wire from the antenna and radio to the battery to the chassis etc.

+UBZnz Hi, thanks for the above comment(s)! Well, there is a difference between electrical earth and RF earth. Of course electrical grounding of the antenna mount to the chassis is important in case of static build up but it doesn't replace a RF-ground plate; the latter normally being an issue on plastic or aluminium. A good explanation of this is here: www.k0bg.com/ground.html Most cars have a steel body and this is less of an issue. Not so with Defenders - which is why I asked. Can't find much on the internet specifically about aluminium bodies. So, I am sure there are kind of ready made solutions for Defenders in Australia - because both, HF Radio and LR Defenders, are used a lot. Not so in Tanzania, where I live. So I am struggling to install an antenna on my own right now and not quite sure where to mount it on the Defender and how to RF-ground it properly. So, if anyone reads this and has additional advice, I would be grateful.

+claus dettelbacher A small circular metal plate at the base of the antenna is normally sufficient to capture the RF so to speak and send it back down the Coax cable to the transceiver . I had more issues with the doors , bonnet and exhaust not being properly bonded electrically and affecting my SWR readings . the aluminum body of the defender is generally not a problem as it is directly connected to the chassis and not isolated with rubber mounts . I run a UHF (477Mhz) and a HF (27Mhz) on the front guards , a VHF on the Bullbar (144Mhz) and multi band (3Mhz - 30Mhz) configurable HF off the Tyre carrier , up level with the roof . In my experience with defenders poor earthing to the battery and badly tuned antennas are the general causes of poor radio performance .

An amazing vehicle. Extremely well thought through. Regarding the winch, as I'm sure you know yourself, its only dead weight until you need it. I've seen several "disaster" video's in the outback of people getting bogged and ultimately dying because they didn't have a winch, or at the very least a Ti-For. Wouldn't leave home without one if I was solo. Regarding the LED lights, you might wanna take a look at the link below. Some new tech which should be big next year. Going to change in-car light forever. I'm sure you'll want some of the stuff. Another great vid mate. Looking forward to seeing more! +L4RRY Thanks mate. Yes I'll still keep the winch regardless. Having once used a hand winch solo I never again wanted to do that. That led tape looks impressive. Would certainly make it safer inside for me. Give it a few years and i'm sure it will have advanced greatly.

Hi Brett, how has your Detroit truetrac diff performed since installation in off-road situations like mud, sand, river crossings etc? I am thinking of purchasing one for my Landy so wanted to ask your opinion? my vehicle is my daily driver about 70% off-road and 30% on-road. would appreciate your opinion. thanks

hey Will. Very happy with it. Maintenace free. Offroad I can feel it kick in on occasion with a sudden change in grip in the rear. I reckon it greatly helped with not getting bogged during 30000km of touring Australia.

hey cheers brett. im planning similar adventure in my perentie rfsv. ill be stealing your bed ideas with a few changes to suit a two door with mark 2 roll barrs (rops) as the rfsv has a taller roof its ideal. you have saved me buying a shitty rooftop tent.. Cheers! your thinking on your mods is all ligical and sound. only thing i picked that i do different, .... a nice new clean fuel jiggle hose for decanting water to day use bottles. .. saves struggling with jerrys ;) the larger fuel tank is interesting, the rear one. where did you get this? and the y filler. cheers

Was thinking of getting something like that jiggle hose, perhaps a hand pump kept in a clean bag. The rear is long ranger from ARB, the sill tank is long range automotive. Y filler custom made. Thanks.

110 owner here... while on your trek... did you ever second guess your vehicle choice?.. like...wow a cushy land cruiser would great right about now... i personally love the ride, noise and feel of my '97 row 300tdi. i just wonder...did it wear on you ?

+YuddaLevy hahaha. Never! After 9 years i'm used to the rough ride, poor ergonomics and water pools in the footwells. The sound proofing I added made a big difference to my sanity. At times my biggest gripe was having to turn the radio way up to hear music on gravel tracks. I would eventually go deaf for the day and switch it off.

Obviously more weight from the dynamat, bullbar and winch and rock sliders.. though some of that was evened out from removing all the rear seats and brackets. Performance wise far superior than what I had before. Car far more better off road, more powerful, better grip from rear diff upgrade and much quieter though still loud.

When you go through the river does the water get into the inside? many of the defenders I see going through rivers open the door when they get through to let water out, if water does go in doesn't all your equipment get wet?

+Franklin Michael Yes water goes in to the footwells depending how long it takes to get across. I packed all my gear in wolfpack boxes so there was nothing to get wet.

To some extent yes, but a defender is bolted and pop riveted together so there may be a lot of joins to seal. The work I did certainly reduced the amount of water intake than on previous trips.

If you haven't used the winch, can you then say you have challenged the car? - Take a look at the videos from Malcolm Douglas. Please tell him that a winch is "dead weight" (that was the point where I stopped your video). He has used the winch often in his videos. I would enjoy to see you challenge the car in the future. Keep on producing!

Malcolm Douglas explored Australia back when it was still mostly wild country. All the national parks I have visited to date have very good track networks. Haven't needed it yet despite 40000km of touring Australia. Once I hit WA and the kimberley then i'm bound to need one.

Is it legal to have the spare tire on the hood mate? I was told it’s not legal as it obscures view

Will depend on what country you're in.. though Land Rover Australia had a hood mounted spare as a factory option, hence why in Australia it's legal as long as it doesn't obscure the view too much.. there's a specific measurement the law uses as in 'x' amount of metres ahead.. for me very minimal loss of vision.

367000km. Only because of a damaged crankshaft keyway. Had to get a new crankshaft.

could have just swapped that light for an LED strip light. I don't know how you could handle not having an LED light bar on the front... i can't live without mine. A awning that folds around to the back would have made it a bit easier too, as well as slide out drawrs in the rear. Good set up but i can think of a heap of simple things tha would have made life a bit easier.

Roaming The Outback Gotchya. I realised after watching a few of your vids that a lot of your set up was based around saving weight, drag and $$$, so realized why you didn't opt for an awning all the way around and storage on the roof. Makes sense. I'm one of those people who also likes to drive at night, so that's why i like the light bars. I just have two ebay ones, they work fine and have held up great, cheap as chips too. Great work on you videos, subscribed.

I recommend spraying some WD40 lubricant to that shovel wood pole and it will protect it and will last much longer ..

Most national parks have pit toilets, otherwise dig a hole. The rest of the trip I camped in caravan parks. When on the road petrol station toilets or supermarkets. In the bush go where ever you want. Showering was done as a cup shower with a cup of water and wet wipes to freshen up, or jumping into creeks for a swim. When water available I had a camp shower, otherwise caravan parks. Clothes washing was done in caravan parks or in country town laundromats.
