We swapped out our coil springs for a full air suspension system from Airbagman on our Land Rover Defender 130.
This was a big decision and a lot research went into this project before we committed.
We sought advice from experts with real world experience before going ahead.
This video takes you through the entire install of the air suspension system. Airbags, compressor and Intellride system.
We want to thank Airbagman and Goldfields Off-road for everything they did to make this possible.
We hope you find this video informative. We can tell you one month on from this install and plenty of tough testing we are extremely happy with this decision.
Stay tuned for next week as we hit the beach floating on air 😉

You guys are going to love it. I’ve owned a 2013 discovery 4 since new and one of the best features is the air suspension! I do lose some articulation but that’s more to the IFS snd IFR setup that airbags. It will ride rougher at off road height though, so be aware of that on rutted, bumpy trails. Driven over countless miles of washboards, and rough desert tracks and it’s never failed me yet! Enjoy!!!!

Easier to level out for uneven sites and also the added bonus of quicker slide on camper removal. Legs down drop the ride height and drive out also less wear and tear on the leg mechanisms with no load during operation.

Great video! That air ride is really going to help keep your camper from rattling apart on those corrugated roads. The ability to air up each bag manually should be standard on all new LR's. I've never understood why they don't do that.

Hi guys, congrats on the air bag install. I have the same set up on my 110 and love it. Keep an eye on the front shock brackets-I cracked both and had to get them replaced. No issues since. I suspect the bolts loosened and the associated bracket movement caused the cracks. I couldn’t be happier with my setup. Hope you enjoy the smoother ride.

Besides the 130 have an old Range Rover P38 , with a fully rebuilt airbag system (thanks Airbagman) - that car was the first Land Rover product with standard fitted Airbags if I'm correct - often cursed upon by many (To easy to puncture , always failing , slow pump ) and they replaced it by coils. But as with everything : maintenance is key. True the P38 system could have been built a bit more sturdy. But what a pleasure to drive (if it works) . I also have an emergency connection to each airbag. In my case using a central valve block with mano-meter and special line to the tank. One simple modification I did : a small LED control that lights up when the compressor kicks in - it shows me if / when the compressor runs more frequent as normal indicating a leak. Happy exploring you amazings !!

Nope the air ride came out on the 1992 LSE prior to the P38 they relocated it from the chassis rail to engine bay, however on mine I fitted pushfit connector’s and added tire valves, I still have my classic and P38 and put air on the 110 by harvesting all I needed from a donor cost was under a grand

I have driven coaches all over Australia with air suspension, first class ride. Be aware that the reaction time when the air bags are inflating that there is a slight delay, just hold the steering wheel steady even while the bags are inflating other wise you will find that the vehicle wonders (in your head). It is just something you have to get used to. I am thinking that you may have to watch your tyre pressures may have to drop them a little. Enjoy the ride just watch the components on the height control valves eh. Cya on the tracks.
@leighdearle5965
@leighdearle5965 2 года назад
Such an interesting comment thanks so much. I have indeed been experiencing the slight pull on the steering as the bags adjust. I quickly figured out what it was. Initially I thought I needed a steering alignment. Only thing was sometimes it was pulling left sometimes right 😜
@mahrindi

@@leighdearle5965 gday Leigh, yep your experiencing getting used to airbags, normal. From your description to inflation it sound that you have one height control valve on the front centre mounted. Better with a height control valve on each corner. I had a Scania coach have a height control valve fail in Alice Springs finally got a replacement in mt isa. Just isolated the front

My Prado Grande came with basic air suspension on the rear, but normal on the front. Several have said that the air suspension would soon fail on me. But after 220km I have to say that it has not givem me any problems at all. It is not your computer controlled type but has several setting and functions for different situations, but even so it has served me well.

great that you have a spare bag and that you have a manual over ride to get you out of the bush to fix issues with sensors or leaks. I commented on insta about keeping a spare spring - but a spare bag is great.
@BurtonsAttic

I had a RAM 1500 with factory air ride. It made such a hugh difference in handling over a standard suspension. Not just with bumps or terrain but handling at speed as well on the highway. Worked the same way as yours with lifting the front and rear in stages. Also the closed loop compressor but I think it used nitrogen instead of air. The only issue I ever experienced was in below freezing weather it would be a little slow to responed with changing settings but rode fine. I would just drive it a bit before attempting to change settings and it worked better after warming up. Under 15mph I could push the "parking" mode which made it look like a low rider. By the time you where parked it was lowered and made getting in and out so much easier especially for my wife! 140,000 miles on it with no parts replaced when we sold it.

G'day Leigh, I've run Firestone airbags on the rear of my 130 (99' 4BD1T/MSA-5G swap) for the last 8 years. The 130 has run up and down the east coast of Oz from beach to mountains whilst being puncture and trouble free the whole time. I've never carried a spare either. I have a DIY full manual set up using the same bags as Firestone. I think you'll find once you have a preferred ride height you won't need to play with it very much. Well worth the swap especially with a slide on, it makes levelling the your bed a breeze! If you make it across to Vic/NSW/Qld how about a 130 gathering?

See my response above...well worth adding it to a camper. It was a game changer for my slide on. I have zero reliability concerns, if I puncture a bag I'll stuff full of whatever is handy and limp it along till I get back to tarmac. Be mindful of engineering compliance with rego in Australia. Regardless of what a vendor says their system may very well still need an engineering certificate/plate issued under a State registration system to be compliant.

Very good idea to upgrade the suspension with airbags. I did the same on the rear axle of my Defender 110 DCPU and it made a huge difference. Mine is a DIY setup just with valves and no electronics. Even at the Land Rover dealership, the mechanics came to take a closer look, they've hadn't seen that before on a Defender in those days (2011). Al the best to you both and happy travelling. That is a cool upgrade! Would be awesome if it fits my 1965 Unimog 404 :D I have coils all around. How does it deal with alot of flexing in the terrain on difficult tracks? I drive highway trucks and trailers on air suspension and it is great. But they can blow up. But that happens most times when a piece of scrap metal is stuck in between them. And when they blow on a truck or trailer it sounds like a bomb explosion!

When you fully inflate the bags for max height does that stiffen the suspension? And if so in what way ? by reducing the amount of suspension travel ? By in effect preloading the suspension so that you need ‘more weight’ to achieve the same amount of travel?

Thank you. Glad you asked. The jacket was a gift from a Turkish solider about 4 years ago. The shorts are from Lowes Australia (Traders308) We bought the boots from someone on Gumtree. New and 1/3 of the original price . Steal Blue. Best work boots.

Hello. I'm sure you're already aware of this, but keep your airbags at a level where they will allow the vehicle to compress the airbag. There are so many videos and photos of people with bent chassis' from towing. I've even seen a D Max where the wheel, backing plate, brakes tore away from the diff housing, completely sliced the end off the diff housing. This D Max was not towing & there was no mention that it could have been airbag related, but everytime I see a disaster relating to the chassis around the rear suspension area there's an airbag in there. I'm no expert but I believe it has to be because the airbags get over inflated and don't allow the vehicle to travel through its' length of suspension enough, thereby passing on the up & down travel into the next thing in line which are the static steel parts such as the chassis, suspension mounts and diff housing. That said, it does look like a great addition.

Wouldn’t the air suspension lessen your axle articulation ? Hence making it less capable for off-road

I've installed a crosslink-valve, so the air can travel from the left to the right airbag and visaversa. When I travel on the road, the valve is closed for higher stability. When I do offroad, the valve is open for higher flexibility. As simple as that. Best Regards, David
