Keeping your Land Rover Discovery 2 cool is very important. Here are some things I've learned along the way, including which thermostat to use and which ones not to use.
Products mentioned:
Ultra Gauge (sketchy looking website, I know): ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/ult...
Inline Thermostats: inlinethermostats.com/land-ro...
Gray, Soft Spring Land Rover Thermostat: lucky8llc.com/collections/dis...

Great video I literally stumbled upon! I own a 2001 Discovery Series 2 SE, I have went through hell and back with this vehicle, I originally bought her with a suspected blown head gasket for a grand, she's been my project car ever since!!! I am currently about to remove and replace my Belt Tensioner and Idler Pulleys, Water Pump, Serpentine Belt, Viscous Fan Clutch, Radiator Exhaust Fan, and the thermostat... (I Purchased all these parts from Atlantic British for about $750) which is when I found this video!!! I'm so glad I did 😊 I now not only plan on buying an Ultra gauge, I also will look into the 180° Thermostat you mentioned in the video, unfortunately I had already bought a thermostat (about $30 on Atlantic British OEM) but I now plan on buying these! Please keep it up bro!!! Much obliged 🙏💯 keep the Rover family running strong 💪

Thanks a bunch to your video !!!! Just installed mine two days ago. Temps went down so crazy I was speechless of the results!!! On the old stat my truck at idle will be between 215f to 224f. Driving will stay between 210f to 217f . At some point it’ll drop to 194f for a minute or two and shoots up high again. The result on the 180 stat put a smile on my face driving my Disco for the past two days 🙂 Temps in total dropped by 38 degrees from before! This is huge drop !!! That rover engine must of been suffering all this time which I barely drive the truck due to this issue! Driving temps now between 183f to 188f Idle temps are between 188f to 194f tops doesn’t pass over 194f . Highly recommended!!!

Great discussion of an important topic! I literally shot a piece last week talking about the importance of having an Ultra Gauge and how we got one on your recommendation that hopefully saved us from destroying the motor in the D1 and allowed me to diagnose it as a failing thermostat, that I was hoping to drop later in the week. Awesome work! Can’t wait to check out that inline kit this weekend!

I switched over to the inline it is dramatically better we've been at 110° Plus for the last 2 months I can run the AC on cruising through soft sand or at stop lights and I'm at 189 Max usually about 183. Finally realized the original is stupid doesn't make sense other than a huge bypass which interferes with the flow having to go backward once it's supposedly closes? Here's the real real major drawback why would they place the thermostat after the radiator Downstream from it so that the thermostat gets cooled down water to decide whether I should open? Shouldn't the thermostat be interacting with the hot water directly out of the engine and then deciding to send it into the radiator? This is how literally every other engine is made even the Rover V8 when it was carbureted had a thermostat up on the top by the water pump. Having a thermostat interacting with hot engine water before the radiator is literally the only thing that makes sense there's no reason to have a thermostat after the radiator. Why would you want your thermostat make a decision on whether or not it should open based on cooled down water post radiator? Don't listen to anyone about the factory when it's stupid even if they get a TD 5 180 thermostat it doesn't matter gaining a 10 degree Head Start doesn't mean anything the system is still going to flow poorly and keep trying to shut because the water from the radiator feels cool to it and it wants to close. Get the inline I guarantee you it'll blow your mind especially if you live in Arizona. On my inline I have to switch from the 180 element to the 190 element to keep it in one 90s because the 180 element was making me hit 170s if it was under 90 degrees in the winter and I would throw a low temp code every once in awhile and have worst fuel efficiency. The inline is so good

Went inline myself, one place you will get high temps is long steep off road grades, I was running at the end of line of defenders and hit 217 - briefly no air 3rd high. About a 12% switch backed grade maybe 70 72 degrees out. On the flip side I going down hill in 3/2nd I average 176 hitting a low a 167. Pacific northwest. And to make the point my temp gauged never budged. Every truck is different, but sub 220 is critical. On an average day here I run 183 to 187 between 40 and 65 MPH. As to fans you can replace the stock set up with a Hayden fan clutch and Dorman fan for under 100.00 CDN and even less US. Hayden 2991 (severe duty) with the Dorman 620-112 fan blade works well. It does roar a bit when it kicks in.

Restricted exhaust will cause heat to back up in the manifold, head and motor will run hotter. Hot gases leaving the motor helps to take heat away.

there are options for heavy duty radiator ( an additional tubeset in the core makeing the core one row thicker) I am in OZ and needed a new radiator for one of the TD5s (discovery 2 diesel) It was an easy choice to get a radiator with alloy end tanks and not have the flimsy little return to tank hose fitting that is known for breaking when you look at them. - not fitted yet, as I still have work to do on the engine front (really sad sad story of incompetent repairer, I am still cranky with myself for the error made 😪😥).. hopefully it will bolt straight in as I put the car back together The TD5s do not have any generic issue of cooling system lack of capacity, they may well use the same radiator as the V8 (often this is rover practice)

Back in the day, you could buy what they called a flex fan for certain vehicles and this was designed to blow more air on the radiator when you were idling and as the rpms got higher the fan blades would flex out and they were also bigger fans over all. I wonder if you can buy one for these Rovers..

Great info. I live in Tucson. Yeah in the summer I can idle around 208 with the AC on. Seems like the AC on helps strangely enough because the little electric fan comes on I suppose. Yeah I switched to a 180 and honestly I don't know if it helped but I'm going to bleed it one more time at a slight incline tomorrow morning. The entire cooling system was replaced a year ago by the previous owner I was just going to a 180 for the heck of it because after monsoons have slowed this year and I finally got an ultra gauge I realized maybe I could get a little lower but unfortunately half the videos online are people who live in 90° Max kind of places. Also I was going to tell you the number printed on that plastic actually refers to a type of plastic used for various things it has nothing to do with that thermostat I looked it up LOL. I got the Atlantic British 180 it seems okay so far no change but not worse so I'll bleed it more. I'm sticking with the factory pink coolant but considering going green and just changing it every year or so. I hear pink last longer but is harder on gaskets? What do you think? I'm not concerned with Environmental I just think if green is easier on skaskets I should switch
