Lot of hate for the Land Rover on here! I love mine! Absolutely brilliant car. You can't run one on peanuts, and it'll never have Toyota reliability, but for me a D4 is simply the best family car out there. It works on road, off road, it works as a van, a limo, a tractor, a people carrier, the stereo is louder than the kids, it's comfier than being in bed... What more do you need? I think a lot of people spouting about reliability issues have never owned one. I'd forgive mine more or less anything because it's genuinely such a good car. Great video by the way, nice to see another one getting dirty!
Too Bad they Trashed it for that Ssangyong Feminazi lookalike. The Disco 4 Chassis could have lived on as the new Defender. Versatile body styles, bit Wider, a live Rear Axle, long Travel heavy duty independent Front suspension, difflocks, super low transfer,manual/ auto and less much less tech.
I've had a 2011 HSE 3.0 SDV6 for 5 years. It had 25000 miles when got it, it now has 72000 miles. I love this car. It has everything. Comfort, speed, wow can it accelerate, go anywhere, tow anything easily (I have a twin axle caravan and the discovery does not care at all when it's on the back). You can drive for miles easily, I tour France every year with my caravan and it's an extraordinarily comfortable ride (air suspension). So far it has never let me down. I've just had it detailed and it looks brilliant. It's mine till the wheels fall off. And yes, you will need a lot of spare cash, for brakes, discs, tyres and servicing, it's not cheep to run, but worth every single penny. Hope this helps if your thinking of getting one.
I'm thinking about getting one here in the US. I'm worried about the running costs. Brakes and tires are fine. But if the vehicle is pretty unreliable, I don't want to deal with that. Would you consider it reliable? Some of the stories online are crazy with timing chain replacements for $4200, etc.
@@Feintgames dont believe a lot of the scare stories, yes if they go wrong can be pricey but buy a good one that hasn't been used as a tractor and the disco 4 upgrade version has had all the issues ironed out. and as ive done purchase a warranty that covers you for most issues, I got mine when bought the car.
Chap - best review of the Disco 4 on the interweb - just what I needed, thank you. I'm in Yaxley, Near Peterborough in Cambridgeshire and this was exactly the review I wanted - someone who uses a car! Thanks George, really appreciate it albeit 4 years after the post!
One thing i love about my D4 is how quick the range change is. We have a 2017 L200 at work and it takes a good 30 seconds to change from high to low box. Even when transfer case is warm
I'm picking up a lovely 2010 Disco tomorrow..Had the later 8 speed but although it's better on fuel and bit quicker the 8 feels like it drags as soon as your foots off the gas.
Well - I managed to get a D4 Landmark last August - late 2016 version with only 34,000 on the clock - looks like brand new. Absolutely love it, it's such a joy to drive. Just trying to find the best tyres - I want all terrain, all season with the snow symbol so I can drive in Europe in winter. I did go to PowerfulUK and have swapped most of the filament bulbs for LED (ie: reverse, rear fog, number plate, puddle lights and internals) - and it's booked in to have the underside professionally Lanoguarded. It's one of the very last before they switched to the D5 (I definitely prefewr the D4) and I plan on keeping it for a long time.
Bought mine in March. It’s 2010 HSE full service 89.000 mls all belts change and the car is like new I love it there is one thing some people won’t know and that is the Discovery 4 Up to 2013 has a low rev Turbo and high rev Turbo low rev Turbo up to 2.800 revs high rev Turbo kicks in over 2.800 revs so when you but your foot down and the high rev Turbo kicks in I got a lot of smoke out the the back and almost S.it myself but I did abut of research and found out that it’s the Turbo oil return pipe needed to be changed from a long one that’s on the Discovery to a short one because when you’re driving around and mostly low revs oil builds up in the high rev Turbo then when you but you’re foot down this oil burns off and you panic not knowing wot is happing so Land Rover made the short Turbo return pipe to fix this the thing about Land Rover is that the Holes for the short pipe are there for you there caped of .the pipe around £20 and if you do a bit on cars you can do this you’re self job sorted and I’m still in love with it the bests car have had by far if you’re thinking about getting one look for full service reasonable mileage and go for it I can get 34 mpg around town ok tax is £500 a year but can’t have it all or can you
Nice review George! I also think the new 'Defender' will be more of a D4 replacement than the D5 is... I think a Torquing Point review should be on the cards when it comes out, since all 3 of you are Land Rover drivers.
Now George, forgetting the vehicle for the moment, this is the best vehicle review I've ever seen. Plus the fact you filmed it all by yourself. NOT bulling you up.....just telling the truth.
To be fair Malc, I did it as an experiment just to see how it went and what goes into doing a vid like that, it's a bit more than the normal tractor ride video. I was fairly pleased with how it came out and now I've got a bit of a better idea if I do another. Cheers Malc, have a good un👍
Great Land Rover Discovery, glad you didn’t get 18’s as on my Ute with 18’s didn’t get punchers but rough road spilts inside of tyres which meant lose of air slowly n were expensive to replace.
If you have champagne taste, but a beer budget , don’t give yourself the stress ! When maintained correctly and not allowed to ‘slip’ , you will be rewarded with a reliable vehicle that is a fabulous place to be ! Have had my 2010 HSE since it was 3 x years old and has been versatile and faultless … until it blew in France last year at 145k miles …. Then a world of pain ref engine rebuild / replace options as supply so limited . £10k to rectify with a low mile secondhand engine after a lot of searching and hassle with sharks ! Why you may ask ….. well having mai tai ed regardless of cost ( suspension , gear box service , rads etc) I know it inside out and as based in Ireland , worth twice the amount than the U.K. despite €2,400 annual road tax . Biggest reason thought was what else combines the light , airy space and practicality and well as the new models being so expensive and you will see graveyards of 2.0 version Landrover , so I like the Devil I know and will keep for the foreseeable and just have a range of cars for all purposes ( SMART , 107 SL ETC) and still save money over replacing !
Great video George, especially with vid from drone, I bought a low mileage 66 plate landmark in watomo grey, iconic landrover, I noticed in last few months prices for low mileage 16 ref now over £36000. Regards mark
same here, last ''proper' Disco was the D2 imo and love the old Td5 sound, especially with a straight through pipe. If I ever get another LR, it'll be a D2 or 90/110 TDCi either 2.4 or 2.2 if there still going strong.
I’m from asia. I am thinking to buy a used Discovery 4 3.0v6 diesel. My big questions is what should I know or how to test drive? Many people comment that air suspension are major defect for LR. What else should I take care during test drive? Hope to get more opinions from LR owners.
One of the things that worry me if one of turbos go it’s whole body needs to come off , the air suspension is a worry as bought my car when it was only 14254 last year am hoping it will last for bit before problems start happening. Don’t go to landrover for service go to a decent independent as LR quoted me £825 for 15000 service, got it done for £315. Re brake pads for eg landrover use ferodo for thief pads so just buy ferodo ones instil lr . Regards mark
Is the same as the Range Rover aspect, we’re. Major engine work required the body to come off ? That would be a major cost factor. I’m guessing theL3 is the same I’m looking at buying a 3 for an over landing project this would turn me off. Love the off-road capabilities though
Might be alright driving around a paddock in a cold country, see how good it is if you put a load behind it and travel when the outside temp is over 35 deg celsius.
My dad got the disco 4 hse when he was back and it’s a great thing. It’s good in the country roads and in the bad weather. Got it for a good price as well 30000 miles on it for 33,000 plus the car is super smooth only downside though is the diesel efficiency. Eats it up like crazy
yes diesel MPG is pretty bad, although better than my transit custom i get 31 mpg form the disco 4 and 28 from the transit.... its pants and thats without a load
Nice vehicle really like them lovely to drive you can't beat them, but beware they can become quite problematic and very expensive to fix as genuine parts are ridiculously expensive
Good review I had a Disco 3 good motor had some work done on it some warranty some not bit high road tax 25mpg good one in the snow with decent tyres on
have a 2016 sdv6, love driving it, drive light throttle in Au, i prefer the stick shifter on the 6 speed, but gee the 8speed hangs on with all that torque. Mine does not downshift as you say, if you drive in S mode it will hold the gear i swapped the 20 inch for 18s by modifying the front calipers, better tyre choices for the dirt roads eh no the tare is 2600kg
This is just perfect for what you use it for. Great highway car and hard to beat off road and as a towcar as well,. Forget BMW, Audi and others. Also skip Defender, wich is cool but uncomfy and unreliable. Top vid!
''Also skip Defender, wich is cool but uncomfy and unreliable.'' doesn't that go for a lot of cars/4x4s? most reliability gremlins are from lack of maintenance and/or owner neglect
I've had mine for about 3 years, it's now 6-7 years old, I've not yet needed to replace anything outside of tyres and a yearly service, and I've driven it across Europe on a few occasion. Would still recommend a warranty as when they go wrong the bills can be big.
a A nah mate in my opinion they would have to change the whole front end styling if they made a pickup version because other wise it would just look off and weird and ugly as a pickup even though it’s a damn sexy suv
Nice review George, glad your happy with it 👍I'd love a D4 but for me they dropped a nut with having to have the vehicle body off for a lot of repairs and major service parts. I'm a bit surprised at the mpg as well, not much better than my defender 110 that weights the same and is 23 yrs older 😣. I'm looking forward to the new defender as well.. hope its good.
Cheers casto, you have to remember you've got twice the horsepower in a D4, that's where your fuel goes. I've put about 90,000 miles on d4's so far with no major issues, doesn't put me off owning one
I think most things have more power than my truck 😂. As you know mpg is also driving styles and so on, so never easy to compare. Glad she's doing you well, that's some good milage to find any faults. It's just one of my gripes I guess with the body off stuff, im sure they could have designed it better 😕
@@GeorgeSaunders agreed! Just hope they think of it with the new defender. I know there will be the diehards who will hate what ever but think they will kill it if they follow the disco too closely 😕
Used to run a 300tdi es disco and I liked it a lot. Run a ford ranger wildtrak now and love it. Have u considered a pickup again or is the disco more practical for what u want
I've had a few Disco 1's all Tdi's, well three tbh. One out of the three was trouble free and the other two were white elephants aka well used and literally abused.
Much Better than that Prado 1kd pile. All KD's Blow piston 2&3 and VNT turbos...after 180k Kms...when worked Hard. This Disco 4 will eat tires, batteries and Air suspension but the Engine will go up to 500k Kms with a midlife refresh.
One thing that’s always put me off these is all the reliability rumours?, how have you found it? Or anyone else who’s owned this model between 11-14 plates
No.. It was the earlier Discovery 3 that had some engine issues... the 4 is very reliable and a fully capable off road vehicle unlike the German copycats attempts!!!
Good review George but regarding towing ability as a frequent attender o ploughin matches if there's any vehicle an trailer needs towed in and out of field it usually discovery or defender unless it's the connection between seat an steering wheel that's at fault 🤔😂
@@GeorgeSaunders that's the biggest thing I hear about them as well. All vehicles have issues though, as the saying goes " if it's got tits or tires, its gonna give u problems ".
Great video on the Land Rover Discovery 4 George, I really enjoyed your video on it (helped cure some boredom during this isolation period at home) My friend has a 2012 Discovery in XS trim and she loves it, I actually have a video on it if you would like to see it? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9dPTbucuejk.html
@@GeorgeSaunders yes I've heared that many people don't service it and they get lots of problems. I service my cars regularly and before the manufacturers reccommendations
@@GeorgeSaunders barbarian is good off road but a little bouncy on country roads unless you have the load in the back, but driving very carefully it will return an indicated 45-50mpg i did have it up to 60mpg but just normal driving ots between 32-38mpg
Depends where you are but have a look at www.woodside-landrovers.co.uk that's where I got this one from, they are a family run company that will look after you, and they have a large range of used land rovers
memorabilia lane late 2014/ early 2015 that’s the nice thing about the British license plate it has vehicle year in it so mid 2014 (so any thing from March to September) it would have a 14 on the number plate and any thing from September 2014 to March 2015 would have a 64 on the number plate
@@richardmottram9838 the 3 have a look and see how many high milliage cars are about then you know if you buy a low millage version it should be reliable, in moat cases. The disco 3 is just know for major problems, any disco before 2012 have major issues with the engine which will mean when it goes wrong you need a whole new engine
Well, it's not a Jaguar/Landrover engine. This is a PSA engine - out of Peugeot-Citroën-Ford-cooperation, designed for smaller, lighter vehicles (with many crankshaft failures as logical bonus).
We don't know what the new defender will look like yet. There have been a few spy shots but then that means nothing. Land Rover are most likely making the test cars with different body's so as not to give the game away until they launch it at a big car show.
Yes I must admit I don't think it will be as good as the old ones. The main reason they stopped the defender was because they couldn't make it meet modern emissions and safety standards. I've also got a feeling it will be to expensive so most farmers will end up driving a Toyota hi lux. I myself haven't even made it to a defender yet as I drive a series 3 2 1/4 diesel.
Mines never gone wrong. If you have one and it has then fair enough but too many people willing to criticise something due to an ill conceived reputation. People don’t tend to shout from the roof tops that theirs hasn’t broken. Fantastic robust vehicles just look after them and they will look after you. Landrover had their day of producing low powered, prinitive common rail diesel engines like that fitted to the apparently bombproof Toyotas. People want more than that from vehicles in this day and age
This or Range rover or... Land cruiser or... Shogun or... Panda 4x4 ? 6'6 big lad. Bit economy Like power Ssfety Security Want to get home. Be gentle ta.
Martin Deathe you want to get home? Easy choice get an 80 series land cruiser pocket about 35 grand have 10 years of problem free motoring then sell it in 2030 for a profit 👌
@@GeorgeSaunders Farming must have changed hell of a lot since the days I worked all the hours under the sun for virtually nothing. Like finishing at 1.30am and back at work at 8am. No time to enjoy yourself away from work. Though I enjoyed the life in a way (young & stupid) lol. I moved on to heavy plant, really big boys toys in opencast mines, that was enjoyable.
