Replacement of the centrifugal oil filter housing on a Land Rover TD5 discovery 2, It is a relativity easy job should take you around 2 hours or so depending on condition of the nut/bolts. I do advise to remove the turbo first this will make the whole job a lot easier trust me!

I stripped one of my 6mm threads , I just drilled it out with a 6.2mm drill and tapped it out to 8mm in situ.

Thanks for making this vid ... I was reading the workshop manual re this job and was a bit surprised when it said the tubo needed to be removed ... but watching your struggle has confirmed that is what's required. It helps so much to understand all that is needed so you can order the parts in advance. Your efforts appreciated!

I found that a small magnetic parts tray was a terrific small investment after getting sick of looking for and finding and picking up dropped pieces.

Turbo removal I found was surprisingly easy. That third exhaust bolt around the back can be easily got to from underneath with a few long extensions. Well done tackling this job though, especially in winter! Frankly, I would have put a longer bolt and nut through! I always 'research' RU-vid first for any hints and tips!

cheers for taking time to do vid, saved me alot of messing, according to D2 workshop manual, centrifuge cover bolts 10Nm (7lbf.ft) same for oil drain pipe to housing and again for drain pipe to sump, 25Nm (18 lbf.ft) centrifuge to oil cooler housing bolts.

the engine room is coated with oil. Cool British engineers who care to drive for life without rust. British Emotion. I drive a Discovery 2 TD5 (2004, LHD, full options) with ACE, with fuel burning heater. my lovely d2 is leaking oil too. video is good. I'm looking forward to another video.

I got some slightly longer bolts from a hardware shop. They grabbed, all good until I forget and over torque them. I'll be drilling, tapping, and putting in studs next time.

I'd have drilled it through. Put a nut on the bottom. But replace unit makes the job right.

I got a long drill and tap extender, to drill oversize and tap for larger bolts. No removal required.

You could have removed the housing with the pipe, just need to turn anti clockwise and slowly whole thing come out, much easier

I just went to change the filter and the thread was done so I put longer bolts in as the thread goes all the way and there is a hole at the bottom so the longer bolt can come out the bottom much easier

Yes....me too and it only cost only 50p..And , it took me minutes to fix. I do see where you are coming from though 👍 and just want to fix as spec. You only need to have the centrifugal filter bolts hand tight. It usually is an apprentice with no experience with a very heavy hand who damages screw housings; or the inexperienced td5 amateur.

I will agree the engineer who came up with this system should be shot, I just finally after hours got the bloody water pump changed but spent 2 hours trying to get the last bloody bolt in for the damn Centrifugal shit housing in still cant get it, Walking away now from it for today before I really smash something, What a bloody nightmare to change the damn water pump.

Word of advice. Get yourself a builder's hop up to stand on. makes life much easier if you're not 6' 6".

My bango sudenly just started peeing oil out and I cant get a spanner in to tighten it so 10 to 1 I will have to strip everything down just to tighten the turbo oilfeed banjo to 25nm.🤦
@troymortimer3487
@troymortimer3487 4 года назад
could you retap it with a slightly bigger thread, I know I over tighten it on my last oil change. it has not pulled yet, but sure it will. (I looked at the wrong torque value) on rave. I should of realised......

really useful as i have the same problem.....Is there an o ring where the housing meets the oil cooler?
@tabb8872
@tabb8872 4 года назад
Yes there is make sure the o ring is seated correctly before bolting the housing back on
@dangerman777
@dangerman777 4 года назад
Tabb88 thought there might be. I found the bolts untorqued on mine after some major work by a garage and I think they’ve all worked loose and the o ring has fallen away thus giving me 5 litres of oil on the ground and a tow home!
@tabb8872
@tabb8872 4 года назад
Dangerman 777 ouch! I take it you saved the engine? No damage done? What did the garage have to say about it because I know these aren’t the smoothest engines but they don’t rattle bolts loose lol
@dangerman777
@dangerman777 4 года назад
@@tabb8872 fortunately I was close to a stopping point so no more than 300 yards after the oil pressure light came on. I didn't approach the garage as I can't expect truth or integrity from them now and I can't be bothered chasing them for the price of the oil and my own time when they deny everything. The top right bolt of the three was laid on the engine block to the rear of all of the oil assemblies, the lower right was finger-tight. On getting everything off I found the o-ring had distorted and burst with the pressure so the oil went out on the loose side of the housing. It was a miracle it managed until then..... and of course also found the stripped centrifugal filter bolt that was causing my gradual drop in oil level..... and a finger tight banjo bolt for turbo feed! Have now found a new garage for work that's too difficult for me or i can't be bothered doing... your video helped in this job for me ..... fortunately I was able to get the o ring replaced by just shifting the filter housing upwards after moving turbo aside and undoing the lower union for the oil return pipe.

Dangerman 777 that was lucky then! An I’ve been there in the past not being able to trust garages now I do all my own mechanical stuff, I have a friend that owns a body shop and a guy that’s a god with diagnostics, I’m really happy to hear that the video was of help if you do it yourself you know it’s done right 👌🏻
