Land Rover's Defrosting Windshield & Cold Climate Pack. Is It Any Good?

Today here in absurdly cold Minnesota. We decided to test out Land Rovers fancy tech vs a basic Ford F-150. Does the built in windshield defrost do anything? Or how about the fancy heated washer fluid jets? Lets find out on this freezing, snowy Minnesota Day! Will we find that there is no replacement for displacement? The old saying maybe true even when it comes to keeping a car warm.

Heated windscreens are most useful for ice / Frost at below 0C. Not for snow at 6. Heated windscreen owners are off down to road within 4 mins. They also have the benefit of not refreezing or fogging

Having had heated screens in a few cars - it’s the best way

Nice video. In my experience the benefit of having the heated windscreen is that it melts the ice from underneath quicker, even if the cabin is not up to temp, meaning you can brush or use the wipers to clear the ice and snow. Where as on my other vehicle it is common that some of the ice towards the edges and lower portions of the windshield keep hard ice on them until the vehicle cabin is totally warm not allowing me to run the wipers without potentially damaging them. Although the cabin may not be as warm I can drive away much sooner with clear windows in my D90 vs my Toyota. Also you have the camera on the D90/110 so the back window is not really a concern to have defrosted before you can drive off. Typically in the D90 within the 5 mins the heated windscreen is running I can use the wipers to brush away nearly all Ice and show with the wipers and hit the road with good visibility forward and rear. That might be a better or different comparison for an icy day.

First off you should of used the P400 version to do the test since a V8 will generate much more heat faster than a 4 cylinder. Cold climate pack on the Defender is very useful when there is ice or freezing rain on the windshield. A better test would be to see how long before you could easily remove the ice with a snow brush without having to scrape. The heated windshield on the Defender let's you do this within minutes of being turned on, thus the reason why it shuts off after 5 minutes.

Good info. I was thinking the same thing with the value of the feature related specific to ice.

Absolutely! I have the P400 and the defrost and heat is amazing. The temperature here last week was in the teens and Snow on windshield. Remote start and when I got to car in approximately 10 mins the windshield was defrosted and inside temp was 74 !

Nicely done gentlemen. The cold climate pack possible inclusion for a future Defender purchase has been an open question. All I really want is a heated steering wheel. Unfortunately, a heated steering wheel is not a stand-alone option. Hence the CC Pack. Also, Defender wind shield cracking is a real issue. I test drove two Defenders (90 & 110), and both had cracked windshields fresh off the delivery vehicle to the dealership. Purchasing a Defender with the assumption of future windshield(s) replacement is a good idea. Based on your real-world test, I'm going to pass on the cold climate pack option.

I ordered a Defender a couple of months ago and am still waiting for the factory to accept the order. Last week I asked the dealer to delete the cold climate pack, mostly because replacement windshields (a factor with the upright glass) are more expensive. Seeing your video, it sounds like that was a good way to save money anyway. Thanks!

Replacing my windshield now due to rock chip - $180 difference between the heated vs non heated LR genuine windshields.

@@punkin314 Now that I’ve lived with my Defender through two winters, I see the value of the heated windshield. It’s not really to melt ice and snow on the outside. It’s to clear the moisture on the inside faster than blowing air can. It works pretty well.

Would be interesting seeing the results of the same test with the V8 defender

Love Arizona. Have been there 5 times in the past few months!! You can't get a ton of use out of the windscreen . I had an Ftype and Range Rover with the 5.0 supercharged. One of the best set-ups out there.

I think you will find the rear side window lines are for antenna, not heating. Only your dog would benefit if you heated that!

you haven't proven shit as the heated windshield is for ice and as soon as you turn on the feature you can easily brush off the layer of ice in 2 mins
