Was Port au Port affected by the tsunami that ravaged the Burrin Peninsula in November 1929? When I was stationed at Harmon AFB , 1955-56 , a resident of Port au Port mentioned experiencing a "flood" . She was of the Abbot family that ran an equipment supply business for fishermen. Today, I wonder if that flood was actually the tsunami of 1929. Like my eldest sister she was probably born in the early 1920s and oid enough to recall the 1929 flood/tsunami. Would like to know if she was remembering the 1929 event , or some other tsunami originating in the Gulf of St. Lawrence say, or maybe only an unusual high tide.
The Abbott Store still remains at Port au Port West. It had a fire in the store and they lost it all....but they built another store and its still going strong. I grew up in Port au Port and I remember my Mom talking about the Tsunami as her Mom told her the stories because my Mom was born in 1929. Its every girls dream to move back to Newfoundland and connect with your roots. Newfoundland just keeps getting better and its because of the people.
