I work as a land surveyor. This job covers many different projects in many different fields, but they all require the same thing. Precise measurements. Before I take measurements, I have to setup a Base Station. The base station is setup over a point that had a GPS unit setup over it previously, and over the span of 6 hours had used Geo-sync orbit satellite data to pinpoint the GPS Unit's exact position on earth down to a thousandth of 1 survey foot. Once the base is established, I set up another GPS unit on it and verify its coordinated and then can use a roving GPS unit to take precise, sub centimeter measurements on construction items of significant importance, such as welds, valves, etc. I take a shot with the rover, it then uses the known position of the base station, and then the position of the satellites, plugs those numbers into an algorithm which in turn will triangulate the exact position of the Rover unit.

I think being a surveyor is good for singles, bad for married people. Sometimes a surveyor can go to survey different areas and leave his family for a few months. On the othr hand It is healthy compared to office works, it is like doing exercise! The body and the brain works. Fun.

you should try a quick connect. I use to use top con GA with a tribrach. i switched to trimble R8 with a tsc3 data collector. i started using fixed height tripods also and got rid of the tribrach. its awsome to keep your suvery style set on 1.80 meters/5.906 SFT. Im doing Alta surveys on windfarms. Also doing staking jobs. I love my job and have been a crew chief for 7 years now

I started out under my dad doing surveying about two years ago. But he was a dinosaur! Using a leica total station and and an sr33 sokkia data collector. One day I was doing inventory at our little shop and found an equitment box, opened it up and found a leica rx1280 data collector and a rover and modem to spare. Why werent we using this? His best bud and crew chief said he didnt want to learn it because he was about to retire. I jumped on that. Sure it cuts hours if youre thinking about it that way but the whole world basically runs on GIS or state plane now. Unless youre in a localization kinda mood. Good video man.

Hey man - I have to say that this video is really helpful for people who are in / or freshly finished college - I am only year after getting BSc in Land surveying, but I'm lucky to work in same area as You - one thing - Instead of station and rover, company that I work for uses trimble geo7x - I never had a chance to look at trimble station and rover set up - I only seen manuals in past - video clarifies a lot. If You will ever have a chance to explain more about this ... Many of people like me (I believe) will really appreciate Your effort of putting it all together . Keep up the good work - and best of luck with watever You want to do in a future :) Regards from Ireland. Adam.

Funny looks like you set up your base in the bottom of a ride at least, you would need to set your satellite recognition at at least 40 degrees for your base, although I’m sure you have an r10 with glonas. And your assuming the initial as built was correct you should always hydrovac after a locate . But cool none the less reminds me of the prairies in Alberta with the wind

Young men take notice; there are countless jobs/careers that you don’t need 4 years of college and $100K of debt to transition to. In 2018, there were only 30, THATS THIRTY, new Surveyors in the state of Texas. A Surveyor (RPLS) is the guy who certifies the surveys -and that’s just land surveys. Surveyors in Texas are so high in demand, Survey companies have partnered with community colleges to put students through school to help them become RPLS’S. Straight out of getting certified, you’ll be employed making GREAT money.

You can learn on the job, little by little. It helps to be sharp in math. In some states you will need a 4 year degree to be a licensed land surveyor, in other states, no. And it certainly helps to have a 2 year degree in surveying to get a job. Just like everything else, surveying is very technological today.

Guys please help a young first year student out. Did a surveying practical in which we had to measure direction from known and unknown points. Due to time constraints and horribly timed weather conditions we were unable to get the direction to our last unknown point from a known point. I'v calculated the direction to two visible trig beacons from this known point using join calculations and polar checks, but without access to campus equipment (theodolite) I cannot measure the direction (accurately) to the last unknown point. Here comes the question (provided anyone can make heads or tails of this), could I use a string and a protractor to get an estimated direction from our final station, provided I know the calculated direction to two other known trig points.? The final point in question is +- 10 meters from our last station, so string is a possibility. In other words I'm asking for caveman techniques here haha. This practical counts for a large chunk of the semester mark so any help or other advice would be great!

Hey Chris, I'm Chris from Connecticut, aged 27. I'm wondering if you have an opinion on going into surveying as a career rather than "GIS", which I suppose is more working with ArcGIS and Civil 2017/17 (Autodesk) and that kind of thing and can be more political as you're mapping out things like average income and so forth, I believe often to make a news headline which sounds like a "study" to push some agenda. Of course not all GIS jobs are like t hat I'm sure, but yeah, if you or anyone else have an opinion on Surveyor vs GIS (even versus Civil Engineer), please let me know. I have no college education as of now, but am well-read in psychiatry, religious history, some areas of philosophy, and so on. I *can* learn math, but I'm slower than others to pick it up, having autism spectrum disorder... (Asperger or NLD type).. I just remember on my GED back in 2006 which was awarded with "Honors", I was like 98th percentile just about in everything except math, which was about maybe 68th or something. Maybe lower.

People get Land Surveyor mixed up a lot. If you just want to work in the field as a Party Chief, like me or if you just want to run the instrument, you don't need a degree to do that. You need to be half way decent at math and be able to visualize stuff, but that's about it. If you want to become a licensed Land Surveyor then most states require some kind of training course. Screw getting a license, then you're stuck behind a desk instead of being in the field where the real surveying takes place.
